IRAQ: THE JEW'S WAR

    In Palestine there were anti-Jewish riots and fighting in 1929, 1931, 1933-34.  In 1936 the Arabs revolted and it lasted until 1938 before being put down by the British.  British Jews financed arms and refugee smuggling in the British protectorate of Palestine and British losses to the Jews were not small. In 1947 the British began to pull out of Palestine and both Arabs and Jews sought to secure territory before they left.  A turning point came with the attack by Irgun forces and the Stern Gang on the village of Deir Yassin .  The Arabs retaliated with an attack upon a Jewish medical convoy on the way to Kadassah Hospital and Hebrew University killing 77 doctors, nurses, student and patients.  After the defeat of the Arab forces the Jews began the systematic destruction of over 300 Arab villages and the killing or expulsion of the inhabitants.  Arab Villages Destroyed      

    In 1950 the Knesset approved the Law of Return which gave every Jew on the planet the right to immigrate to Israel .  In 1952 it passed the Nationality Law giving automatic citizenship to all Jews by virtue of the Law of Return. The law for the Palestinians who lived there is different.  For a Palestinian Arab to be an Israeli citizen, regardless of whether he and his ancestors had been on the land for generations he would have to be registered (by the Population Registration Law of 1949) as a resident in Israel on Jan. 3, 1952, would have to be a physical resident of Israel or an area attached to it on Jan. 4, 1952 and have been in Israel from the establishment of the state to January 4, 1952. 

    Using these laws the Jewish government refused to recognize the nationality of Palestinians Arabs who were driven out of Israel prior or after its establishment.  Many Palestinians never found out about the laws until it was too late.  And the deprival of citizenship was inherited.  A child born to a stateless couple became stateless even if they were born in  Israel .    

    In a letter on November 14, 1975 Rabbi Berger stated "All of this is public law.  The application of these Zionist laws makes discrimination a matter of national politics and of demographic fact . . .

    "I am unsure of what "racism" may mean  . . . but if "racism" is a form of government or a structure of society in which national rights and responsibilities are officially legislated upon the basis if creed, color or ethnic derivation, then the Zionist character of much "Basic" Israeli law qualifies."

Jerusalem orders Palestinian homes to be razed

 Deir Yassin 1948 

    In the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun (commanded by Menachem Begin, later prime minister) and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin, a village that lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State; But the Jew's Plan Dalet called for it to be occupied as it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

    Meir Pa'el was a young Jewish participant in the attack on the  village of Deir Yassin .  His description appeared in the April 4, 1972 issue of the Israeli newspaper, Yedoit Aharonot.  His story was published in The Spotlight in July 6, 1981.

    "It was noon when the battle ended and the shooting stopped.  Things had become quiet, but the village had not surrendered.  The Etzel (Irgun) and Lehi (Stern) irregulars left the places in which they had been hiding and started carrying out cleaning up operations.  They fired with all the arms they had and threw explosives into the houses.  They also shot everyone they saw in the houses, including women and children--indeed, the commanders made no attempt to check the disgraceful slaughter.  I myself, and a number of inhabitants, begged the commanders to give orders to their men to stop shooting, but our efforts were unsuccessful.  In the meantime some 25 men had been brought out of the houses: They were loaded into a freight truck and led in a 'victory parade' like a Roman triumph, through to Mhaneh Yahuda and Zakhron Yoself  quarters (of Jerusalem ).  At the end of the parade, they were taken to a stone quarry between Giv'at and Sha'ul and Deir Yassin and shot in cold blood."

    "The Jews ordered all out family to line up against the wall and they started shooting at us.  I was hit in the side, but most of us children were saved because we hid behind our parents.  The bullets hit my sister Kadri (four years old) in the head, my sister Sameh (eight years old) in the cheek, my brother Mohammad (seven years old) in the chest.  But all the others with us against the wall were killed: my father, my mother, my grandmother and grandfater, my uncles and aunts and some of their children."

British Assistant Inspector General Richard Catling:

    "The recording of statement is hampered also by the hysterical state of the women, who often break down many times, whilst the statement is being recorded.  There is, however, no doubt that many sexual atrocities were committed by the attacking Jews.  Many young school girls were raped and later slaughtered.  Old women were also molested.  One story is current concerning a case in which a young girl was literally torn in two.  Many infants were butchered and killed."

    "I went back to the Jerusalem road and got an ambulance and a truck that I had alerted through the Red Shield . . .I  reached the village with my convoy and the Arab firing stopped.  The gang (Israelis) was wearing country uniforms with helmets.

    All of them were young, some even adolescents, men and women, armed to the teeth: revolvers, machineguns, hand grenades and also cutlasses in their hands, most of them still blood-stained.  A beautiful young girl showed me hers, still dripping with blood--she displayed it like a trophy.  This was the "cleaning up" team, that was obviously performing its task very conscientiously.

    I tried to go into a house.  A dozen soldiers surrounded me, their machineguns aimed at my body, and their officer forbade me to move.  The dead, if any, would be brought to me, he said.  I then flew into one of the most towering rages of my life, telling these criminals what I thought of their conduct threatening them with everything I could think of, and then pushed them aside and went into the house . . .

    I found some bodies cold.  Here,  the "cleaning up" had been done with machineguns then hand grenades.  It had been finished off with knives, anyone could see that.  The same thing in the next room, but as I was about to leave, I heard something of a sigh.  I looked everywhere turned over all the bodies, and eventually found a little foot, still warm.  It was a little girl of 10, mutilated by a hand grenade, but still alive . . . Everywhere it was the same horrible sight. 

    There had been 400 people in this village; about 50 of them had escaped and were alive.  All the rest had been deliberately massacred in cold blood for, as I observed for myself, this gang was admirably disciplined and only acted under orders."

Sir John Bagot, Blubb, former British commander of the Arab Legion of Trans-Jordan, related in his memoirs "A Soldier with the Arabs,"

    "The fact remains that when the terrorists entered the village, they found in it only old men, women and children. These were massacred apparently without exception, and without regard to age or sex.  Two hundred and fifty bodies were thrown down the village well.  The Irgun and Stern at first openly claimed credit for the massacre."

. . .killed between 80 to 100 Arabs, women and children.  To kill the children they fractured their heads with sticks.  There was not one house without corpses.  The men and women of the villages were pushed into houses without food or water.  Then the saboteurs came to dynamite the houses.  One commander ordered a soldier to bring two women into a house he was about to blow up . . .Another soldier prided himself upon having raped an Arab woman before shooting her to death.  Another Arab woman with her newborn baby was made to clean the place for a couple of days, and then they shot her and the baby.  Educated and well-mannered commanders who were considered "good guys" . . .became base murders, and this not in the storm of battle, but as a method of expulsion and extermination.  The fewer Arabs who remain, the better  . . .

TEL AVIV

    During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War over 50,000 Arabs were expelled from their homes near Tel Aviv.  In their book "O' Jerusalem " Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre confirmed reports by survivors that many elderly people and small children died in the overpowering heat during the forced march.

QIBYA

    On October 14, 1953, a 600 man battalion of Israeli regulars, using artillery, rifles, Sten guns, grenades and Bangalore torpedoes made a night attack on the Arab village of Qibya , a mile and a half inside Jordan territory.  They shot every man, woman and child they could find.  The grisly slaughter included even the animals.  They dynamited the houses, the school, and the church.

    The Truce Supervision Organization of the United Nations, in a report made on October 16, said the attack had been made by a battalion of the Israeli regular army,  and that it was "cold-blooded murder."

KUFR KASSEM

    On October 29, 1956 47 Arab inhabitants, including 7 children and 9 women were massacred by Israeli guards on the village  of Kufr Kassem .  Their Israeli guards had announced a curfew was in effect at 5pm while most of the people were working in the fields.  They shot everyone returning from the fields that evening, some 49 individuals.  There was an investigation and a show trial during which all the charged soldiers were given a pay raise.  Their commander was fined the sum of one piaster.

A report on Jewish human rights violations was submitted for the hearings records by the Swiss League for Human Rights in the late 70's and said in part:

    For over three months the village of Deir Abu Mishal , the geographic location of which is strategically important, has been the target of violent incursions by Israeli troops, who shoot automatic rifles into the air and break windows and doors.  The terrorized inhabitants, who seek refuge on the rooftops are unable to sleep at night and are forces to rest a few hours during the day which puts them in a state wherein they are unable to pursue their daily chores.  The obvious objective of this operation is to coerce the inhabitants into evacuation the village, or to justify using force to evict them should they react violently to the nocturnal raids by the Israeli troops.  

    Starting at Bethlehem Hill, the view of the Old City of Jerusalem, encircled following expropriation by buildings constructed for Jews only, is indicative of the determination of the Jewish State to retain the West Bank . . . .

    The numerous arbitrary arrests, prolonged cases of detention without legal supervision, and the deportations are flagrant violations of the provisions of Article 3 of the Declaration (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) . . .

    The numerous violations of property rights, such as arbitrary expropriation, the prohibiting of construction, and the demolitions of building are inconsistent with the provisions of Article 17 of the Declaration. . .

    Torture is commonly and systematically practiced, in contradiction of the principles of law, and in particular Article 5 of the Universal Declaration.

    In October of 1956 Menachem Begin told a Tel Aviv conference "You Israelis, you must never become lenient if you kill your enemies.  You shall have no pity on them until we shall have destroyed their so-called Arab culture, on the ruins of which we shall build our own civilization."  Of 475 Arab villages 385 were destroyed.  In the district of Bethlehem all 23 villages were destroyed.  Former Defense Minister Moshe Dyan acknowledged "There is not a single Jewish village in this country that has not been built on the site of an Arab village."

    Jewish terrorist attacks on Palestinians and Palestinian villages continued through the 50's, 60's and 70's.

JERUSALEM

    June 10, 1967 End of hostilities, Muslims residents were outraged when dozens of bulldozers entered the Old City of Jerusalem and destroyed the Arab Mughrabi neighborhood which fronted the Western Wall so that Jews could worship. In the morning, hundreds of men, women and children were homeless.

in 1976 Palestinian citizens protested in the Galilee against Israel's confiscation of vast areas of their farmlands using the pretext it was needed for military purposes. The police went into the town of Sakhnin and killed six protesters.  There was no investigation.

August 2, 1979 Congressman Findley entered these remarks in the Congressional Record (pp H 7148 7149)

    My information shows there has been a whole series of violations by Israel of the restriction on using US supplied weapons only for the purpose of legitimate self defense.  As I said, on May 6 of this year, Israel broke and 11 day cease fire arranged by the United Nations on the Lebanese border and bombed the Lebanese village of Mohamarah and a nearby Palestinian refugee camp.  According to the government of Lebanon seven people were killed, including a one and one half month old baby, and 40 people were wounded.  A wedding party was in progress in one of the homes destroyed by the bombing. 

    The purpose of this attack was not for reprisal against Palestinians for attacks against Israel . 

    According to all authorities, the Palestinians had been observing the U. N. cease-fire.  An Israeli military spokesman quoted by the Washington Post justified the breaking of the cease-fire and the bombing of innocent civilians and Palestinians alike with the statement that this was "in keeping with Israel's policy to hit any time and any place" to preempt terrorist attacks inside Israel.

    For three days running, Israel proceeded to use U. S. supplied warplanes to bomb various towns, village and Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon .  Scores of Lebanese and Palestinians were killed and injured, and thousands were made homeless refugees . . ..
