Despite US claims of progress in quelling the
insurgency in Iraq, it remains as robust as ever and
could grow a good deal stronger, according to a new
study released Thursday.
The study by two veteran defense analysts working for
the Washington Institute for Near East Policy also
said the US operation in Iraq was at a "tipping point"
that will last for six to nine months.
"I think the outcome of this tipping period is
probably going to dictate whether or not the US effort
in Iraq succeeds or fails," analyst Jeffrey White said
at a lunch unveiling the report.
The phenomenon of death squads operating in Iraq has
become generally accepted over recent months. However,
in its treatment of the issue, the mainstream media
has zealously followed a line of attributing
extrajudicial killings to unaccountable Shia militias
who have risen to prominence with the electoral
victory of Ibramhim Jafaari’s Shia-led government in
January. The following article examines both the way
in which the information has been widely presented and
whether that presentation has any actual basis in
fact. Concluding that the attribution to Shia militias
is unsustainable, the article considers who the
intellectual authors of these crimes against humanity
are and what purpose they serve in the context of the
ongoing occupation of the country.
If Christian fundamentalists are to be believed,
America's invasion of Iraq and the consequent brutal
slaughter of thousands of innocent civilians in that
country are all part of a grand divine plan that will
finally culminate in the 'second coming' of Jesus
Christ. Establishing an empire that will extend all
over the globe, Christ will rule like a powerful
monarch, saving those who believe in him and
dispatching non-believers, all non-Christians and
non-conformist Christians, to everlasting perdition in
hell.
The
Palestinian Authority has appealed to the
international community to force Israel to
stop carving up the West Bank into enclosures,
enclaves and Bantustans.
The Israeli army has signalled its intention to keep
using Palestinian civilians as human shields in
operations aimed at assassinating, arresting or
kidnapping Palestinian political and resistance
activists.
Not unlike the program the machines
created in the movie called the Matrix,
America
's Propaganda Matrix manipulates the poor and working
class by lulling them into an illusory sense of joy
over being so "free". While wealthy dynasties (like
the Bush clan), their sycophants, and their corporate
cronies pillage the US treasury and employ foreign
policies (like the Bush Doctrine) to seek world
domination, an apathetic American public joyfully
slaps magnetic ribbons supporting the Iraqi invasion
onto its gas-guzzling SUV's, smiles and nods its
assent at federal budgets calling for increases in an
insanely bloated defense budget and cuts in spending
for social programs, lightheartedly surrenders its
civil liberties, and blithely watches the wealth gap
widen to monumental proportions. The brilliance of the
American Propaganda Matrix is that it enables a covert
nobility to rule behind the guise of a "federal
republic". With virtually no open acts of violence or
totalitarian measures, a small fraction of the
population in the
United States
maintains a vast majority of the world's wealth
and power by ensuring that "their people" are
elected and appointed to the key positions in the
US
government. Living in the delusory American Propaganda
Matrix, many poor and working class Americans
contentedly go about their lives as the "freest people
in the world" enjoying the fruits of "sublime
capitalism". In the American Propaganda Matrix, the
American Way
is The Way, and there is no room for critical
evaluation. Those beguiled by the American Propaganda
Matrix will tenaciously adhere to their delusions,
regardless of who suffers or dies as a result.
Fears mount as US opens new military installation
in Paraguay : The tri-border area is
home to the Guarani Aquifer, one of the world's
largest reserves of water. Near the Estigarribia
airbase are Bolivia's natural gas reserves, the second
largest in Latin America. Political analysts believe
US operations in Paraguay are part of a preventative
war to control these natural resources and suppress
social uprisings in Bolivia.
Some 46 percent of Israel's Jewish citizens favor
transferring Palestinians out of the territories,
while 31 percent favor transferring Israeli Arabs out
of the country, according to the Jaffee Center for
Strategic Studies' annual national security public
opinion poll.
Already the Dept. of Global Anti-semitism, being
established in the US State Dept., makes it
“anti-semitic” to express “strong anti-Israel
sentiment” against Israel or its leaders. It also says
upholding the New Testament charge that Jews killed
Christ is “anti-semitic.” Under “anti-hate” laws in
Canada and Europe, such statements are “hate crimes”
punishable by harsh fines and imprisonment.
But, perhaps, the surest sign yet is
the military build up under way in the five provinces
bordering Iraq. The region, with a population of 20
millions, has been put under the control of the IRGC
which has also taken over units of the regular army,
including the 88th Division, and the border police.
Iran is estimated to have 250,000 troops in the area,
its biggest military build-up since the end of the
Iran-Iraq war in 1988.

More than 100 dead and many other are wounded.
The results are obvious: There are over 4 million
Jewish colonial immigrants and there are now 6 million
Palestinian refugees or displaced people. Remaining
Palestinians are relegated to "homelands," in a scheme
similar to what was attempted by South Africa under
apartheid.
On
May 15, the Israeli government voted to extend racist
amendments to Israel’s citizenship laws, preventing
the reunification of up to 21,000 Israeli and
Palestinian families.
But as the full text of the indictment makes clear,
the conspiracy involved not just Franklin and the
AIPAC officials, Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman, but
at least several other Pentagon officials who played
intermediary roles, at least two other Israeli
officials, and one official at a "Washington, D.C.
think tank." It's an old-fashioned spy story involving
the passing of secret documents, hush-hush meetings
and outright espionage, along with good-old-boy
networking.
For the third straight
year, the Bush Administration has continued its
deceptive practice of omitting the cost of wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan from the Budget.
Israel will ask Washington
for hundreds of millions of dollars to help foot the
bill for next month's $2 billion evacuation of the
Gaza Strip and four northern West Bank settlements, a
senior Israeli official said Wednesday.
There were nearly
3,200 terrorist attacks worldwide last year, a federal
counterterrorism center said Tuesday, using a broader
definition that increased fivefold the number of
attacks the agency had been counting.
The
National Counterterrorism Center
's interim director, John Brennan, called a new
database that was to go online Wednesday "the most
comprehensive
U.S.
effort to date to track terrorist incidents
worldwide." But he cautioned that comparing the new
tally to previous ones was comparing apples to
oranges.
All
the world saw the horror on TV: a Palestinian boy
lying on the ground, unconscious. An Israeli soldier
bending over him, not knowing what to do. A settler
coming up from behind and throwing a stone at the head
of the injured Palestinian. Another settler dropping a
big stone on him at point-blank range. A bearded
medic, also a settler, approaches the wounded boy,
hesitates, and then goes away without treating him,
pursued by the chants of a chorus of settler boys and
girls: "Let him die! Let him die!"
Bush
speech flies in the face of reality in Iraq.Iraq Combat
Veterans describe occupation of Iraq as a runaway train. However,
the military is currently overstretched forcing many
soldiers to return to
Iraq
for two and three tours of duty against their will thru
its Stop Loss policy. Troops are being cycled through
Iraq
with increasingly short breaks in between deployments,
family crises are multiplying, divorce rates are rising,
desertion rates are mounting, and recruitment standards
are being scaled down. There is a dire recruiting and
retention crisis developing in the military, with many
refusing to fight in a war they see as a quagmire.
AIPAC, the American Israeli Public
Affairs Committee is not an organization to be trifled
with. Everybody in
Washington
understands that this Likudnik lobby can make and break
politicians. Not only do they have a $30million
annual budget, but they have some very well placed
fellow travelers in the mass media. Come election
season, they can be counted on to stuff campaign war
chests with funds from independent PACs that subscribe
to theirIsrael First agenda. Their greatest strength is
their ability to leverage their media muscle to defame
and ridicule any politician who stands up to their
pro-Israeli policies.
In print and on TV, Bush's neocons have
made clear their desire to see the
US
at war with the entire Muslim world: Today Iraq,
tomorrow the
Middle East
. That the neocons believe the
US
can win such a war when the
US
cannot even occupy
Baghdad
or control the road to the airport indicates a
frightening insanity at the center of the Bush
administration and a criminal disregard for the lives of
Americans and Muslims.
The neocons assured Americans that the war in
Iraq
would be a cakewalk over in three weeks!
The neocons told us that only 70,000 troops were needed
to bring
Iraq
to heel!
Neocons fired the top generals who had truthfully told
Congress that several hundred thousand troops, at least,
would be needed!
Neocons told Congress that Iraqi oil would pay for the
invasion and that
America
did not have to worry about the cost! So far that is a
$300 billion mistake.
Do you want
to know? That's the only popular division that matters
in the United States today: Those who want to determine
once and for all if President Bush knowingly 'fixed the
facts' regarding Iraq, thereby misleading Congress and
the American people into supporting an unnecessary war,
and those who will cover their ears and hum loudly in
order to maintain their belief that Bush and his
advisors remain above reproach.
Zeese:
How
much did this campaign of misinformation cost?
Gardiner: Tough question, Kevin. I don't think it
possible to get a total handle on the effort. I have
read one estimate that put the marketing at $200
million. That cost is trivial, however, to the
collateral damage that has been done to democracy.
The unsealing of a
federal indictment against former Pentagon analyst
Lawrence A. Franklin may unfortunately be the start of
another long case of Israeli spying against the
United States
.
The Out of Iraq
Congressional Caucus, created last week, will to try to
increase pressure on the Bush administration and
Congress to end the
Iraq
conflict and bring American forces home. The group of
progressives, led by California Reps. Maxine Waters,
Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee, has been urging a
withdrawal for some time but formalized its effort last
week as part of its push to become a more forceful voice
on the issue within the broader party Caucus.
Hours after the
assassination of Hariri, the BBC broadcast a program
where the guests emphasized that such an act targeted
both
Syria
and
Lebanon
, and pointed accusing fingers at
Israel
. Afterward the media mobilized to accuse
Syria
, and was put to silence about those who are working to
destabilize the region and fragment it into tribes,
sects and ethnicities.
Republican Senator Chuck Hagel slammed the George W.
Bush administration's
Iraq
policy as "disconnected from reality" in some of the
harshest comments to date about the war from a member of
the president's own party.
With his
job approval rating slumping to 42 percent in a poll by
The New York Times and CBS News, down from 51 percent in
the aftermath of the November election, Bush has begun
an effort to refocus his presidency -- a move welcomed
by anxious Republicans

Several hundred Irish football fans and Palestinian
solidarity activists demonstrated against the ongoing
Occupation and colonization of
Palestine
in advance of the Ireland-Israel football match in
Dublin
on Saturday June 4th. As part of the wider movement for
boycott, divestment and sanctions against Apartheid
Israel
, many protesters called for sporting boycotts to be put
in place similar to those against the apartheid regime
of
South Africa
.
