Web Visitor Fears God Won't Forgive Her

By David J. Stewart

I received the following letter from one of my web visitors in February of 2007...

Sometimes I worry that I am like Esau trying to repent with tears to God cause I am sorry for things I have done. I get nervous & get sick often thinking about it. Then I wonder If I have committed the unpardonable sin. I don't know if someone that committed that sin would be depressed about it.  I love when the Birds sings. God knows I look at birds like a symbol of his love for me.. So sometimes when I get down & get depressed & think I am unforgivable I hear those lil sweet birds singing & its like God is saying to Me, Karen I still love ya. Then at Night time I will think & tell God " I know I am still tender hearted God & then a verse will come to me ... "be ye tender hearted forgiving one another even as Gods For Christs sake has forgiven you."  (I'm sorry I think I misquoted that verse).

Well hope to hear back form you ~ Karen

The following is my reply,

     Thank you for your e-mail.

Concerning Esau ...

"Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.  For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears." -Hebrews 12:16,17

Please understand that God was more than willing to forgive Esau.  Esau wasn't denied repentance with God, but rather concerning the consequences of his foolishness.  Esau's actions could be easily compared to abortion today or divorce.  Many women live to reap the day that they murdered their child, but all the repentance and sorrow in the world CAN'T bring that child back from the grave.  Likewise, divorce is a sin that perpetuates for a lifetime.  Esau did everything in his power to get back his birthright, but it was TOO LATE.  So please understand that Esau's predicament had nothing to do with God's forgiveness.  Yes, there are things you and I have done in this life that we CAN'T undo, and we too have to live with the sorrows of them; BUT, God is abundantly willing to forgive us of any sin in our life... "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool" (Isaiah 1:18).

Hope that helps,
