I should mention I can only think of Kurt Cobain as the other person in the 20th century who stood up very openly for genderqueer people and represented genderqueer expression in photos in his short life. Kurt was often beat down for openly expressing "gay thoughts" in his hometown and an interview in a Gay magazine in 1993 he talked very openly about getting beat often by homophobes & transphobes on the street and in alleyways. So much of his music was about our culture's denial about snobbery toward anything that would color outside the lines of gender.
