If Honedge evolves at all (which I hope it does), these are pretty much what could happen.

One Sword > Sword and Shield > Suit of armor, holding the sword and shield.
One Sword > Multiple Swords > A LOT OF SWORDS
One Sword > A really big sword
One Sword > Some other weapon, like a spear or an axe.

Like some other anon said, if Yamask can evolve into a full-blown coffin, a sword could plausibly evolve into a suit of armor.

I'm not seeing that, really.

Yamask was a death mask, whilst Cofagrigus was a sarcophagus, both of which tie directly into burial and burial rites.

Honedge is specifically a weapon, not a soldier. Evolutions either focus in on or advance a certain part of the concept, so becoming a suit of armor goes against that.

Eh, I don't think a sword becoming a suit is too much of a stretch. At least to me, a sword+scabbard and a suit of armor tie into the concept of a medieval knight.

And besides, Honedge is described as a spirit that is inhabiting a human implement (the sword). Armor would still be a human creation, so they could wave it off as the spirit stumbling across an old suit.

new item is put into game "incomplete armour"
give it to honedge and it evolves
the new evo is honedge with it ribbon reaching into one arm hole of the armour and the hand like end coming out the other arm hole.
All the armour is filled with its ribbon which it uses to manipulate it as if it was its own body, honedge is still just the sword.

the new evo is not a flat out upgrade but instead rearranges its stats to be more defensive
the sheathe is put into the player's inventory after the evolution and can used on him again to change him back and switch between the 2 forms.
NEVER going to happen but just how I would go about a honedge evolution.

So what if, instead of fossils, they had, like, "artifacts," left over in ruins or some shit. This could be one of them, and there would be another that was, like, a jug, with an angry face on it. That would be pretty cool, I think.

I don't really like the design right now, but if the game kind of hyped it up, it would be pretty neat. Have a village where people occasionally say "Oh, shit, dawg, have you seen that floaty ghost sword? Thing's scaring the fuck outta me" and suddenly the design would work pretty well.
