I was a pokemon fan all my life and im 30. I just wanted to wonder - how old are you?
People who areound 30 and still being pokemon fans...do they even exist?

By the way i see there is a huge war between "nostalgiafags" and "newfags", and since im an actual oldfag, i can say that 1 and 5 gens are my favorites. To be honest i never was so happy about Pokemon all these years like after seeing Black\White, and i can't wait to see X\Y.

2 gen was the most boring to me. Boring concepts and pokemon that i like to pretend they don't exist. (okay im lying, it has some really nice ones but still this gen is the most forgettable)
3rd gen is when all that edge came out. Kewl pokemans with badass attitude. Way to go! AND GODDAMIT WEATHER WHALE! AND RED GODZILLA!!!
4 Ookay. I had some busy times during that period so i can't say that much. I liked it. All i can say. May be the only minus - too much of really useless but cute looking pokemon.
5 - YES! This is the real one for me. Some "wtf" kind of pokemon (garbage pokemon lol i LOVED to see kids going butthurt all over it), nice looking pokemon, some neat animation and lovable characters.

FAIRY type. Can't say i love it but can't say it makes me angry. I just don't fucking care. All fearies are weak creatures. Who cares if Happiny can use an anti-dragon ass-lazer? Sure some dragons still can use...i dunno. Earthquake. Fire punch....whatever. (and im not a dragon fan so this "Fairy VS Dragon" is not mine thing actually)

So. Just wanted to ask - how old are you? Is there anybody around his\her 30 and still being a total pokemon fan?
How did you become a pokemon fan?
Do you have some funny or interesting memories? What do you think about all these different generations?
>>
How can you say your a Pokemon fan all your life if you're older than Pokemon itself?
>>
>1 and 5 gens are my favorites
You're alright, old man.

Oh, and 22; started in Christmas of '98 with Blue.
>>
>>12782271 (OP)
I'm 22, Gen 3 is my least favorite. Not saying it's bad, just saying it had the region I played the least. I try to go back to it all the time, can't. Meanwhile I replaced the battery on my silver last year and played through the whole thing in about a month, and I STILL haven't played HGSS. I'm currently playing White on an emulator.
>>
>>12782279
>How can you say your a Pokemon fan all your life if you're older than Pokemon itself?
Because after some years the "my life" thing means "those things that are important". And your mind tries to forget all those not-so-important memories of 80-90th.
It's really and oldfag thing.
>>
I'm 20. From top to bottom, my favorites are
Gen 2 (I am not blind to the issues, but Silver was my first and nothing can beat the mood of the setting in my eyes)
Gen 4
Gen 5
Gen 3
Gen 1

I'm sure X and Y will become my top favorites though.

All that said, I consider myself a Pokemon fan. I love Pokemon, I adore Pokemon.
I was a part of that big sweeping phenomenon back in the 90's, and I'll be a part of it until the very end. Nothing will ever stop this franchise as a whole from being one of the most important factors of my life. Its fun, it's memorable, its made me friends and its made me happy.
Basically, there is no gen game that I'd rather play over the others. You can hand me Silver, or Diamond, or Emerald, or Red, or X or anything and I would play the hell out of it because I love the game.
>>
I'm 21, I like 1 and 2 gen the most and 3 a little. I absolutely hate gen 4 (especially gen 4) and 5 to a lesser extent.
>>
28 over here! Pokémon became famous because of the anime here. I downloaded the roms fro Blue and Red in a cibercafe because I didn't have internet at home and took them to my computer in floppy disk, ha.

I stopped watching the anime around Johto but the games forever stayed with me. Can't wait for gen 6.
>>
46 years old here. Undoubtedly the most senile person on the board.
But yes, we exist.
>>
22

My favorite Gen is Gen III. Despite telling anyone who will listen how much I hate gen II and IV, I don't particularly dislike any game.
>>
>>12782412
You gotta be a real fan to get into Pokemon in your 20s.
>>
Twenty-four.

Don't have specific opinions on which gen is the 'best.' They all have strengths and weakness. Gen I will live in my heart forever, but I have favorites from all of them. There are probably forty or so pokemon that I think of as favorites from all different gens-- even some gen VI. So... yeah?
>>
20 nearly 21, and been with it since the start.

I'd honestly say my favorite gen is gen 3, if we're counting all the games within the gen. If not, then my favorite game is HeartGold.
>>
>>12782271 (OP)
I'm 18 and I have been able to play all gens. Which for me was something since i never played gen 3 games until now I was able to do so. Got rehooked on pokemon this year around the time I got Black 2 and I'm working to complete the national dex. Cant wait for X and Y
>>
I'm 26 and I've been a fan since they first came out. I started my adventure on my 12th birthday in October of 1998.

I played a bizarre, partially translated Gold on an emulator before it came out in the US, and I beat it.

The first regular pokeball I threw at an Articuno on a friend's FireRed caught it at full health.

I consider myself more of a collector than a battler, so Gen IV is my favorite thanks to the pokeradar. Next favorite is V, followed by II and I nearly tied. Gen III is my least favorite, but it's still not bad.

I'm not upset about the fairy type. I think dragons needed another check, and this was an okay way to do it. If anything, there should be more low-level dragons now which appeals to me as a collector.
>>
>>12782271 (OP)
You're only old as shit in your mind man.

21 here, and I grew up playing this shit and probably will, at least in passing, still play whatever they're pushing out when I'm 30 too.
My personal taste is 4>2>1>5>3
Pretty psyched for X/Y

28. I bought Blue when it first came out, counted down the days until the release of Mewtwo Strike Back at the cinema, followed all the hype for when GS was revealed, bought GS on its release day, imported Sapphire since in the US it got released practically 6 months before the UK...you get the idea.

Still a huge fan and I love all the gens, except for 3. 4 was weak as well. But nope, been loving Pokemon since the beginning and will be buying XY on its release date too.

Funny story? Alright.
>Working in a museum
>Hear two kids talking about Pokemon
>Casually lean over and say something about the Pokemon they were talking about.
>"Huh? Do you know about Pokemon?"
>Lift up corner of work shirt to reveal Pokewalker on my belt
>Kids go absolutely apeshit
>Clinging to me and babbling all about their favourite Pokemon
>We talk for a good 15 minutes
>Mother shows up
>Kids excitedly start telling her what an awesome time they've had and that they've made friends with me
>"AND SHE LIKES POKEMON TOO!!"
>mfw

Still makes me smile even to this day

You're like my pokemon soulmate, dude. I'm slightly less old but I agree with pretty much all that you said. Gen 2 sucked hard regarding most pokemon, I hated the starters, for starters.. But revisiting Kanto was a joy.
Then, gen 3 was so odd, but I got sucked in by the pretty graphics, and most of all, the added complexity with nature's, abilities and whatnot. So, loved it as well.
Gen 4 eluded me too, but I got back into it once I got a used Pearl game, and boy did I love it! The new- new mechanics were incredibly fun to mess with, plus so many pokemon added, a whole new world where they "forced" new stuff onto you. Great.
Gen 5 was awesome not just because graphic improvement, but because I saw it coming from a mile away with all the leaks, rumors and stuff.. All the expectation just makes you want it even more.

>>12782473
Very true. I treat all generations with equanimity. But I do not like competitive. It seems too restricted.

Ohh at least 28 abd 46! To be honest it feels weird for me - to be a pokemon fan at 30.. I mean - i feel that "psychological barrier". It's time when a grown up man can't just approach to kids and say "HEY LET'S TRADE SOME POKEMON!".
I hope after couple of years there will be so many older pokemon fans so it will be a bit more normal.
PS:

Same here. But the reason of me being a pokefan actually a bit more "deep". I was a "bug collector" and some "zoology-inspired" kid myself so Pokemon anime/game was just like my dream come true. I was so happy!
Also - my dog died (he was with me since i was a child) during i was watching that first "Friendship Ash-Pikachu" episodes and it strengthened my interest in pokemon.
P. - is a world where you can have friends of all kinds and types.
P. game simply a game about finding friends and grow stronger together.
I think Pokemon is the reason of why i have so many good friends. They teached me that friendship is what really matters and you can find a friend if you just look better (tall grass, motherfucker).

Cool story bro!

I naïvely assume that most if not all of /vp/'s regulars have been playing the games since day one ( hell, how could there be nostalgia if it was otherwise? ), so I expect the majority to be in the early/mid twenties, I don't think anyone sees you as "old" when you say you're 20/21. With that said, I'm the latter and every pokemon fan I know of is aroud my age as well.

I watched the original kanto series and orange islands, then sometime later I got silver. I was like wtf is this shit, those are not even real pokemon, surely this is all fake. I even went as far as naming cyndaquil charmander like it was supposed to be. Really enjoyed it though ever since I discovered it's just the new gen.

1st gen>5th gen>2nd gen>4th gen>3rd gen - worst designs ever
motherfucking manetric
blaziken - how is this not a digimon??
also milotic, flygon, breloom, fucking mawile (what the fuck is this?), ugly ass groudon

21 y/o here and I'll probably play Pokémon until the franchise die.
I don't see anything wrong in 'older' people playing and enjoying Pokémon. After all it's still a simple RPG with turn based battle system.

31 here, started with blue in October 98 then got red and ever since, I've got and beat every game out there, even the side stories.. I love this franchise, my fav is gen 5 and my least favorite 2, I hated the remakes hg ss, everything was so hard. lol But it's k. Fairy type? meh, gotta see how it all plays out once the games are out.
>>
I'm 19, and I started playing Pokemon when I was around 8, my first game being Ruby version.

Since I've started playing, I've obtained and beaten at least one game from each generation, and I have to say I love them all.

Red and Blue, despite my not being around to play them at their release, do still have a nostalgic feel to them with the old graphics and music. The Pokemon were great, though the game was slow (due to tech restrictions) and very unbalanced.

Gold and Silver were great additions to the previous games, though I admit the Pokemon were somewhat lackluster, as was Johto itself. Still, the story was fun and the game itself was very enjoyable.

Ruby and Sapphire, my introduction to Pokemon, were big jumps from the past generations, while also being a few steps back. The graphics were overhauled, and we got a bright new world full of very exotic feeling Pokemon. The lack of day/night cycles and SO MUCH SURFING HOLY SHIT. Still, the games were damn awesome.
>>
>>12782852
>I watched the original kanto series and orange islands, then sometime later I got silver. I was like wtf is this shit, those are not even real pokemon, surely this is all fake
Lol exactly the same. I saw that 2 gen and was "wtf new pokemon? this is weird! and they have just 3 starters too with the same typing?".
I almost gave my Totodile a "Turtle" name just to make fun of it.
>>
>>12782937
Diamond and Pearl saw another graphics shift, sprites becoming better, and the games overall becoming a better "feel" to play. The Pokemon were still designed well, though for some reason the games aren't as fun when you replay them. They seem to lack the replay value of the older games. Dunno how they managed that.

B/W and B2/W2, yet another graphics change. I feel like these games really peaked for Pokemon, as the games were incredibly fun, and the Pokemon were great, albeit not all of them were awesome designs. (SNOWCONE.)

As for X and Y, I can't say how good things will be. The games look just fine right now, Fairy type and all. For some reason, I've always felt that Gen 6 would be the last brand new generation Pokemon ever sees. I could very easily be wrong, but it's just this feeling I've got in my gut.

Anyway, I love Pokemon in all it's forms (except the new Mystery Dungeon.) I'll continue to play it until it rams itself into the ground.

>>12782921

Another "old" dislikes 2. May be it's because it was something new to us. And we were too sceptic to like it? "Grew up with 1st! Dislike 2nd!!"
(or may be because it was really bad)

I'm 29 and a Pokemon fan since I bought Blue for my old Game boy.
I really like all the improvements they keep making in the games and how the Pokemon world keeps expanding little by little and making a little more sense every game. So currently my favorite game is Black 2, and I'm really looking forward to XY. Things getting stale are boring, so I welcome the new Fairy type and I'm looking forward to know all about it and how will it affect the metagame.

If there's something I truly don't like about Pokemon is the anime. I wish they made a more accurate one, like the BW2 animated promo.
In any case, have a brofist, dude!
>>
25 here.
B/W2 is my fav pokemon game so far and I really didnt like HG/SS, but I dont really "hate" any gen. 2 is my least fav but even that has some really nice pokemons.
>>
>>12783000
No No, I liked it, but looking at the 5 gens it is my least favorite.

I mean the G/S/C was cool. 100 new pokes, new map, day and night, clock, phone, areas and experiences, GOING BACK TO ANOTHER REGION, but finding a 2nd gen poke (houndour) post E4 in Kanto, why?!

And then the remakes, I guess I didn't like them because they made it even harder, everything cool and motivating was post E4. They included the Safari Zone but you had to wait 100 days with it to level up areas.. I guess some things made me like it less, but i played them and I beat them.

Also the 40+ Elite four due to some fool misplacing cities and ruining the map...

Ok, I won't complain, Gen 2, not my favorite, but I don't hate it. I'll just say that they could've done better.

I'm 18 and I got into pokemon around 3 or 4 years old because of the anime. My brother (3 years older) had both red and yellow version and all I could play was Pokemon Stadium 2 (greatest thing ever by the way) until I was 5 and gold came out. I got gold and crystal version and my brother got silver; I never finished either one because I didn't know what the hell I was doing. My brother and I battled a lot with the link cable but of course he beat me every time. Then gen 3 came out and again we both competed with each other, I don't think I ever won a match in those games either. Gen 4 came out and of course, my brother got the opposite version as me, but this time around I actually seemed to be getting good; better than him, even. I remember 1 time we were playing for a really long time and my brother's battery died before he could save, so he got super angry and decided he wasn't going to play anymore. He had just gotten through a difficult part in the game where you had to navigate through a shit ton of fog and he really didn't want to do it all over again. I took his DS from him, plugged it in, and proceeded to do every single thing he had just spent that last several hours doing over again for him, I couldn't let him quit now, not when I had finally found something I had a chance of beating him at.
He's long since moved out and doesn't really have the money to keep up with pokemon, so he's never played gen 5 at all. The last time we played gen 4 together was back in february 2012; he beat me. I have White version and am eagerly awaiting gen 6 which will come out 2 days before my birthday.
Could be my nostalgia goggles, but I love Johto/gen 2 the most. The pokemon, the colors, the music, everything. ESPECIALLY the anime. Even if you don't like the games, you have to admit your lost your shit when you saw Gary with an Eevee on his shoulder in the opening of the anime.

Alright.. I turned 30 today. Yes, its my birthday.

I have been playing since the original red/blue, but had a stent of ignoring it for years. I picked it back up years ago, with Black on a flash cart and a borrowed ds. Memories. So I bought my own ds, and a legit Heart Gold w pokewalker. Loved it so much that I started playing all over again. I bought Platinum next, and a legit copy of white....then a gameboy micro with Emerald and Sapphire, Fire Red and Leaf Green because hey, gotta catch em all (still use flash cart for roms of ds games for trading).
I forgot how much fun I had playing these games, when I was in my mid-twenties. I just got comfortable with what I liked and stopped thinking it was for kids. My wife used to joke with me, asking if I had caught them all... I'm almost there!

I had originally collected all 150, on my Red cart, and sent it off to another state, to get Mew. I actually paid money to get Mew, off an ebay auction! I had 151 pokemon.
Thats right kids. I MAILED my treasured pokemon cart to someone I didnt know, in another state, to get a rare pokemon. Yes, Mew was clearly a hack, but I didnt care. Did you have the original Mew? No, I dont think you did.

Around the time that gold and silver came out, I was supposed to go on a hunting trip with my dad. But I stopped caring about hunting, so I played my game out in the woods, for three days. Outside, wearing full-on winter survival gear, a shotgun on my lap, and gameboy pocket in my hands. I had to wait for the sun... Loved the time feature then, too. "Nope, Dad...didnt see any deer today..."

As of right now, I am playing Emerald and Platinum, both on Victory Road, just leveling and accruing pokemon for my pokedex.

I was so excited when B/W2 were coming out...but I hate them. I beat the first gym and just stopped, because I dont care about it. I just dont like the characters at all.

28.

Started with Red, no idea exactly how long after it came out that I got it. I remember my first bout with pokemon was one time I was sick, I watched the episode where Abra kicks Pikachu's ass. To this day, Sabrina is mah waifu.

Gen 2 is my favorite, but that's because I had some heavy shit go down in my young life. I threw myself into it. So yes its my favorite, but I don't pretend that its from anything from nostalgiagoggles. Most of the new pokemon were shit. Other than Houndoom. Houndoom is fucking awesome.

Gen 3...eh. Was in college when that came out. Played through Sapphire...then sold it. Then bought Ruby, played through that....then sold it. Year or so later I got Emerald, which I honestly think was everything that R/S needed to make it great. Still though, there's lots of pokemon that I totally forget about from this gen.

I loved gen 4. I loved the underground. I loved seeing gen 2 get a remake. Dawn is the second hottest pokegirl in existence...specifically, I like her platinum outfit. Speaking of outfits, I do dislike Sabrina's remake. She looks less fearsome. And that's horse shit. There's a lot of pokemon I like from gen 4 though.

I have a lot of good memories with gen 5. My wife and I still do the doubles train before we went to bed at night occasionally. At least until it pulls shenanigans. Pokemon design is ok. The ones that I really like are always the ones that people seem to dislike (I like Garbador and Vanilluxe, but dislike Deino and his evolutions).

I'm excited for gen six. At first I hated the idea of a Fairy Type, but if it fits in to the chart the way we think it will, I'm excited to have some of my poison type bros not suck as hard anymore.

I'm also 30, and a diehard Pokemon fan since given Blue as a gift. We certainly exist, we're just not as prone to wearing it on our sleeves.

You're not alone; fellow 30fag here! But it looks like us 30 year olds are the upper edge of fandom (not counting parents)... most of us were Freshmen or Sophomores in High School, with the Juniors and Seniors thinking they're too old for it. :D

As for my opinions on the game... being an oldfag, I'd like to think I can see them a bit more objectively, seeing as I didn't wear nostalgia glasses for them (they were on when I was watching Transformers though)... to which:

Gen 1 was good at the time, because it was a unique JRPG. But in retrospect, I find it to be completely unplayable. I can barely get in 15 minutes of play before it becomes bothersome.

Gen 2, on the other hand, was AWESOME. I still remember the hype train back then (it was just as much then as it is today) and the collective bricks shat when the Japanese ROM was leaked on Day One. I still have fond memories of it, and I'm only disappointed today by how somewhat unplayable it is today...

Gen 3 was horrible when it came out, because it changed so much and removed so much more. But looking back, it was actually for the better, and I find it the earliest version that is still quite playable.

Gen 4 was great because it was what I thought Gen 3 should've been. However, I don't exactly find myself playing it a whole lot. Sinnoh seems less memorable for me, although it's not a bad gen! The HGSS remakes, on the other hand, are worth playing for me.

Gen 5 was amazing. The best. It did everything right, and it showed--no, PROVED that Pokemon was a truly International series. I find myself playing Gen 5 A LOT, and the buildup to it reminded me a lot of the hype train for Gen 2.

Gen 6 is one I'm really dying for. It's gonna have some major changes... almost like the split from Gen 2/3. I'm awaiting it with baited breath!

... I got into Pokemon via my friend. We played Magic and he introduced me to the TCG which I fell in love with. I got into the video games via the TCG.

(part 2)

I've always loved the game, and I don't think I'll ever stop. I look forward to the day when I have children and they start playing...

I have quite a few great memories of the game, playing it, being part of the overall Pokemon community since getting Yellow... but, I think it would be too much ego stroking to share. Maybe later. Let's just say that if Pokemon disappeared tomorrow, I'd still look back upon these years with a smile on my face and think "yep, it was totally worth it".

Im 22. Gen 1 is my favorite but I'm not a genwunner. I think each gen is really good (except maybe 4, which besides having some great legendaries, was just sort of ok for me), and gen 6 is going to shape up to be an absolute winner. My 1st game was Red, and the last I ever played was Ruby, but I do plan on playing X when it comes out (just recently got a 3DS). I've been a fan since I was 10. I remember the first card I have got was a Poliwag.
