Anyone else not really liking this guy? I'm not usually one to dislike a Pokemon just because it's an inanimate object (I love the Klink and Litwick lines), but... Christ, it's just a ball. I hope it evolves into something a bit nicer looking.

Monorpale does have a face though. Those circles that resemble closed eyes (with a gem-like eye on top), and a mouth. The "cloth" that's attached to its hilt also looks hand-like.

Voltorb is just a ball with two eyes. Monorpale is a sword with one eye and a hand like tassel. It also has a pseudo face with the sheath on. The main difference is, Monorpale has a better justification for it's look because of its typing. Possessed objects are not uncommon in fiction, and they usually don't become too anthropomorphic when possessing things.

I kind of like him. I wonder if it will evolve?

I think the hand is a cool touch. It reminds me of Cofagrigus.

Living swords are nothing new. If it being an overused living inanimate object is your issue that's fine but that's not what you said, you said it was just a sword which implied a sword has less reason to be a Pokémon than ice cream and magnets. Swords are at the top of the list of inanimate objects to be living creatures, I'm surprised we didn't get one sooner.
