I think that after the original 151 they were really pushing for just new content in general. I like the old ones because they were familiar. For the most part they actually represented creatures we know. I think my problem with the new ones is that they aren't relatable.

Bulbasaur is similar to pretty much a dog, I believe, in his behavior. I don't think his "plantyness" really came through in his/her persona. However, in the later evolutionary stage he/she seemed more sluggish and plant like. He was animated more as a large tentaclus fighter rather than a nimble pet like bulbasaur.

Magmar - Familiarity doesn't mean 100% like the original. You've already pointed out some features of magmar that you've seen in real life so I don't feel like I have to go into this.
