I personally find the opening scene with Shinji by the lake very depressing, but not outright disturbing. He tried to commit suicide. After Misato leaves him at the end of ep 24, he tries to drown himself in the same lake that he met Kaworu at... Why else would his hair be wet? Shinji can't swim.

02 is actually an improved version of 00, not 01. Really, 00 and 01 were both prototypes. 00 is Adam-derived, and 01 is Lilith-derived. Either they exhausted Lilith creating 01 (there are concept pictures of NERV or GEHIRN growing 01 from Lilith and then ripping them apart), or 01 wasn't very satisfactory. I have watched Ideon, the movies too. I have alot of respect for it since it was the breaking point when it came to doing shit different in mecha. I think I'll end my side of the argument since you're now using Ideon as an example and I can't really enforce Eva's writing on that without having to somehow say something bad about it.

I do personally feel that they both are vary differently in lots of aspects though.
