Metagross - psychic abilities plus a powerhouse of a physical attacks. Can also levitate and generate electricity.

Flygon - aerial travel, desert travel, total bro.

Torterra - bonsai rockgarden tortoise, awesome as hell. Plant stuff covered, frenzy plant and leech seed would come in handy. I can ride around on him too.

Darkrai - essentially a ghost, can sink into the shadows; great for scouting. The most phantom-eque pokemon.

Swampert - crazy-ass axolotl salamander. Immune to electricity. Damp ability and ice beam would come in handy. Water transport.

This is also why I and my friends refuse to use ANY legendaries in any teams on the games, simply because it's unrealistic that a standard trainer could ever have one.

I generally base it off of the anime pre gen III (when it started sucking somethin' fierce).

When people caught legendaries prior to that arc shit started going down and nature fucked right the hell up.

Yet when people catch them now in the anime as long as they aren't a "unique" legendary (such as mewtwo, dialga, arceus, etc...) nothing happens.

Yet in the SECOND movie, establishing it as a base rule early on, when Lawrence III caught the legendary birds everything went bat shit balls to the wall insane. Even though the legndary birds have been depicted as being non-unique.

So I just generally establish a "non-legendary" rule as that's how I saw it growing up as a child. It didn't seem right to use them as it would possibly have dire consequences on the environment. Not to mention how rare they are, if I could catch them, why couldn't 400 other people? By that rule everyone and their grandma would have ONE eventually or until they run out.

Sawsbuck and Stantler are all I need. I'm currently training under a normal type Gym Leader. It was a lot of work to get this position, and there is a lot more than battling challengers. We also patrol the surrounding routes, for illegal activities and rampaging pokemon.

These are ideals, and assume I can catch them all in one region (I don't want to have to backpack around Japan for three years to get this team)

Gengar - I'd go to some haunted place, man up, and find me a Gastly. I imagine there would be a Craigslist-type service online where Haunter/Machoke/Clamperl/etc. owners could do safe trades.

Ampharos - find me a Mareep somewhere.

Ludicolo - get a Lotad, and save up for a Water stone (I doubt I'd come across one. Christmas or birthday present, perhaps?)

Froslass - I'm assuming I wouldn't have to actually kill my Snorunt with a Dawn stone, and that Froslass are only based on the legend of the dead girl. The Snorunt would be more difficult to find than the others, unless they migrate South in the winter.

Reuniclus - assuming they're all over North America, my first poke would most likely be a Solosis.

I'm leaving the last slot open for a traveler/HM poke, unless I end up getting attached to a sixth.

I wouldn't be a competitive trainer but i would hike and explore a lot because it looks like great fun. I'd have a friendly little Bulbasaur, a Geodude who would turn into a big tough looking Graveller and when i was tired he would let me sit on him as he walked around and help me carry our gear.

I'd also have a Zubat who would light up dark places and a Clefairy who would be a complete wildcard and have all sorts of weird unpredicable moves.

I might pick up a Chikorita later on because i like them so much and it would be a nice grass type companion for Bulbasaur.

3) Breloom, for Spore and False Swipe-based captures.
4) Dragonite, for riding.
5) Blaziken, for protection.
6) Spiritomb, for scaring the willies out of folks and making early catches.

This is my core team: I'll obviously add and rotate to it. It'll likely change, though- once I'm in a decent office job, I'll be looking at more attractive choices like Alakazam (damn, how do I calculate the end of year-- oh, thanks there, bro.); Spiritomb would hardly be a good choice around the kids (if, y'know, at least better than Shuppet). Lucario or Slowking or such might not be bad, either- they're able to properly talk in canon, and I can't help but see that being pretty helpful in the workplace.
I'd still keep my Lilligant, though.

Elm apparently thought it a travesty I never got a proper starter. Trained Achilles up to punch fire and shit lightning. He likes fighting more than all my other pokes combined, which is only sometimes unsettling.

Stalked us through most of Hoenn while we were doing the gym challenge there. Finally revealed itself just as Mt. Chimney went through a "minor eruption" (still have the burn marks on my shoulder from that.) She and Apollo make a good team for two on two fights.
