Sup /v/.

I'm getting kinda sick of the 'XB1 NO GAMEZ WIIU ALSO NO GAMEZZZZ' threads, so let's talk about something different.

I own a small but fairly successful retro-to-new video game store, located somewhere in the Northeast of the US. We've been open for a few years now, and, due to a mixture of the large amount of stock we have and word getting out, we have a fair share of repeat costumers.

Does anybody on here collect video games seriously? Like, 'I will never trade anything in / I need that Complete in Box' collect?

Well, for all the talk on here of 'casuals' being the cancer that is killing gaming (and I can agree with this to a certain extent, albeit only because developers started making games solely for them), let me tell you, as far as being a customer is concerned, I'd rather take a casual any day over a fucking collector.

Fucking collectors, man.

Casuals, they come in, and they want the new generic brown FPS for 360, and you know what? I'll 100% always have it in stock. They look at the price, even if its $60, and buy it, no questions asked. They'll trade in 3 months later towards a new brown FPS, and etc. Suffice to say, I make most of my profit from these casuals and their brown FPS.

But collectors, collectors are the most babby It-has-to-be-my-way fucking bullshit in the world.

'How much is Mega Man X?'
'$20'
'I saw it at a yard sale / online once for $7, can you make me a deal?!'

'Do you have Pepsi Invaders for Atari?'
'Uhh... that's like, the rarest game ever made. They only ever made 125 of them, never sold in stores.'
'Oh, so... do you have Pepsi Invaders?'
'Is there anything else you are looking for'
'Nope'

'Hi, I'm going to spend 3 fucking hours walking through your store, checking the prices of every single game you have on ebay, making sure you haven't mispriced anything, and ending up buying one $4 game that usually goes online for like $7'

cont
>>
At least haggle with them on the price OP.

Thats half the fun.

Collectors want everything handed to them for yard sale prices, and they can just go and fuck the fuck off.

I also have a very small section in my store behind the counter with some video game trinkets, action figures, etc, just to liven the store up. And fucking collectors, they're not happy just buying the thousands and thousands of games we have, no, 'how much is that pikachu clock', fucking go on ebay and find one, asshole, it's literally the only thing not for sale.

Tldr collectors are entitled babies who expect the rarest of the rare for extremely cheap prices, expect everything to be perfect, and for you to constantly have everything in stock.

They are the worst.

I know 3 or 4 really cool collectors, but everyone else is the worst.

Post your collector stories?
>>
File deleted.
>>191736970

Don't get me wrong, I do. You gotta understand that sometimes they want as much as half off of shit, and, not too toot my own horn, we have the cheapest prices in town by far, already.
>>
Oh, fuck off you lazy prick.

It's your fucking job to serve the customer. I too work a retail job.
>>
I'm a collector and i'm not like this at all.

I only actually buy shit from ebay and flea markets. I play all the games i buy. I don't ever resell. etc
>>
>>191737019
Having merch on display that isn't for sale is kind of a dick move.

LOOK AT ALL THIS COOL STUFF I HAVE IN MY SHOP.

WHAT? NO, ITS NOT FOR SALE, AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

And, because I am fairly bored, and for your amusement, I will share some of the worst stories that have happened in my store.

1) Just yesterday, a little girl peed all over the floor, and the mom didn't want to clean it up (cool)

2) A traded in xbox 360 was working when we tested it, but upon testing it later, it did not work. What?

Pop that sucker open, maybe we can fix i-OH GOD COCKROACHES EVERYWHERE OH GOD WHY

3) One time, a mom asked if we had used or new ps3 controllers. I told her both and the prices for both. She said her little jimmy only buys new. Okay.jpeg

She sends the little fatty in with her credit card, he buys the controller and nothing else, leaves.

Two days later, she comes in, brand new controller all open, no packaging left, complaining that the controller was 'too expensive'. When I told her it was opened and we told her the price on the phone, she said she'd 'report us to the Better Business Bureau', threw the controller at us and left (lol)

4) Somebody fucking threw up right in front of the door (on the outside) last week, literally right where people walk, on a busy Saturday. Fuck them.

I'll think of more
>>
>>191737348
Yeah but their being cunts to him.

They're treating OP like he's a moron who doesn't know the value of his stock.

>>191737501
Do you ever go into actual stores looking for older stuff?

>>191737624
Haven't you ever heard of a store having posters on the wall and shit like that for ambiance and to spruce up he store?
>>
I don't know if I'm really a collector so much as just a hobbyist, but I do like my games to be CiB and in good condition. If I go to a store with used games, I usually go through them on my own, and if I think the prices are too high I'll scoff and laugh at them inside my head, but I never give the store employees flak for it. That's just bad manners.
>>
>>191737717
>1) Just yesterday, a little girl peed all over the floor, and the mom didn't want to clean it up (cool)

Das nasty. I once saw a little girl squatting and pissing outside someones house like it was nothing, the mother didn't even take her somewhere quiet like a park or something. NOPE, just squat outside someones house and piss.
>>
>>191737717
I want to open my own shop like this.

1 and 3 scare me though.
>>
>>191737847
Posters sure, but stuff like figurines and that is just being a tease.

Do you at least have a "NOT FOR SALE" sign there or something?
>>
>'Hi, I'm going to spend 3 fucking hours walking through your store, checking the prices of every single game you have on ebay, making sure you haven't mispriced anything, and ending up buying one $4 game that usually goes online for like $7'

Stop having everything overpriced. Game Gallery, I know it's you.

Steop selling earthbound cart only for 200 or MVC2 for 50 when I can get it for 35
>>
Is this your first retail job? because this kind of shit happens in almost every store.
>>
>>191736752 (OP)
What's the worst group of people on the trade-in end of things? Personally, I found the guys who try to pawn off obviously stolen gear were the worst.

>>

If a store has ridiculously inflated prices I go somewhere else, I don't get all snooty and tut while comparing ebay prices.
>>
>>191738437
W-What're you gonna do with all those condoms and lube?
>>
>>191738516
you know what
>>
OP, have you considered that you might suck at your job? That collector's realize what is a good price what is not?

For example, Megaman X for 20$ IS overpriced. I've only seen it at 10-15$ at the stores around me, and they know you probably bought it for 6$ or so.
>>
>Do you ever go into actual stores looking for older stuff?

No because if they had them they had anything rare they wouldnt be selling it in store they'd sell it on ebay.

I try thrift shops occasionally.

Stories, continued:

4) I once had a Call of Duty tournament with over 60 smelly kids all wearing monster hats, hoodies, and athletic shorts. It smelled so bad that we had to air the store out for two hours afterwards lel

6) There is a fully grown very retarded man who comes in with his father. All the retarded man does is walk around and turn off all the interactives and flip over games on their shelves. I haven't had the heart to tell him to stop it.

7) I get lectured at daily as to why Fallout 3 is the best game in the world, why autists, why
>>
>>191737916
It shouldn't. The customer is always right, you get to decide if they get to be a customer. Being able to put your foot down will go a LONG way towards drawing in, you know, normal people.
>>
>>191736752 (OP)
>$20 for megaman X

Fuck you, you are the problem here, cunt. I paid 10 for megaman X, 6 months ago at an established used game store.

are you developing a game with HeroEngine by chance?

I must be the only game store in the world that does no ebay selling. Everything in storefront. I guess this is cause we got kinda known as a retro store.

the only thing I sell online is broken 360s.

>'Hi, I'm going to spend 3 fucking hours walking through your store, checking the prices of every single game you have on ebay, making sure you haven't mispriced anything, and ending up buying one $4 game that usually goes online for like $7'
well duh
>>
>>191736752 (OP)
I agree.
Not only that, but the fact is that being able to store all your games digitally so they don't take up physical space is a godsend.

I swear to god, the m2 it takes to place games in your house/attic costs more than the actual worth of the games itself.

I regret buying so many shit titles in the PS1/PS2/GC era that it's such a shit feel not being able to sell them to anyone for other than $0.99 a pop, and throwing them away is just shit.

game hogging and collecting should be done online, and even then it's stupid, but doing it physically is the worst, unless you have a hugeass house, and even then it looks silly if someone comes in that's >20
>>
Well, fuck, another day wasted on /v/. At least I still have work in an hour to mix things up.

Now I remember why I stopped coming here.
>>
How big of a fortress could you build from the sports games people have tried to trade in?

Right in the feels.

"Hey BITCH, you ready for todays lesson?"

Sir, please leave if you aren't buy-

"ALL RIGHT, Fallout 3 is the best game ever, here's why:"
>>
>>191738812
Thats just being a cunt.

Take a list of prices of the games you saw in the store and compare the prices on ebay at home. You're just cluttering up the stroe, especially if you only end up buying a $4 game.
>>
>>191738890
Because entitled collector's right? You seem like the least cool game-shop owner possible.
>>
>>191737019
>HURR EVERY SINGLE VIDEO GAME COLLECTOR IS LIKE THE ONES I HAVE EXPERIENCED IN MY SINGULAR STORE IN THIS PARTICULAR PART OF THE U.S.

Go suck a dick, OP. Crying because someone was pissed you were pricing Earthbound for $400?

not if the games are already sold, which has happened to me multiple times, i'm not taking that risk again

never thought of the sign... I might actually do that today.

>>191738212
lol, no. Seriously though, whatever prices are going for online, I set them 10-15% cheaper. Also I include all taxes in with purchade.

>>191738345
You are correct. It sucks because you need the stuff as a store, but you know its fucking stolen. The police have been involved only twice ,which is pretty good considering we get thousands in used stuff every week.

>>191738557
the NE in general has higher prices than say the south. We are, by far, the cheapest option in the area. /there is a store selling Mario 64 for 30 bucks. 15 here.
>>
>>191736752 (OP)
Yeah and that is a problem for very specific retailers.
For the industry and particularily the consumer however discerning customers that won't just pay whatever the closest store sells the stuff for are a good thing.
>>
>>191739156
Unless the store is literally too full to have more people come in, I don't see why that is a problem. People regularly spend 1 or 2 hours inside Wal-mart browsing, same with flea markets.
>>
I would totally go to OP's store and piss on the floor.
>>
No, OP. Play n Trade is like almost any other store now that determines pricing directly from fucking Ebay. It's stupid and you know it.
>>
Kind of on topic, anyone else from Australia here find ebay prices infuriating?

People selling games in Australia are so fucking retarded. They think anything you can't buy in store is a "rare" game. Boy they love to use the word "rare."

I had to spend $80 on Paper Mario TTYD, while it goes for like 20 in the US.

Fuck, I just checked and it is now going for around $100 in Australia. Fucking greedy cunts.
>>
>'I will never trade anything in
Yes
>I need that Complete in Box
No. I'm fine with digital only unless nintendo is involved.
