The thing with Valve is that all its employees run its own projects. It's a completely level management structure, there's nothing even resembling top-down. Gaben is just a figurehead.

Meanwhile, Half Life as a series has fallen out of the public's eye. HL3 will come out and the main audience will wonder what it is.

People aren't inclined to play sequels or threequels to things they've never played. That's why things like Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon are named what they are. You can't name something that came out over five years after the original "2" or else people will wonder what "1" is.

Am I the only one that just absolutely hates what happened to the series? HL was one of my favourite games when it came out, captured my imagination and made me believe games were more than just a way to waste time. Opposing Force was brilliant too.

I got hyped as FUCK for HL2 only to be disappointed as shit when it came out, and then Episode 1 and 2 were fucking lame and by then it had been ten years since HL1 and I was just ready to kill myself over the miserable direction Valve had taken with it. It's now 20 fucking 13 and I'm still left with nothing but bitter disappointment at what could have been, with no new HL releases AT ALL in six years, let alone bad ones (Black Mesa doesn't count).
