It simpily means your origin. Yan means origin more or less. so if your name is say, Peterosian (or Peterosyan) It means you are from Peter's family. Kind of like Peterson of western Europe. However not all armenian names end in "ian" (yan) there used to be more, such as "ots" "unts" and "uni" which also mean similar things, but would also show your class, like if you were a noble or a peasant and so on back in the times of kings and stuff
