The new system architecture for the PS4 is far more reliable and easier to develop than on the PS3, the fact that they included GDDR5 will help advance gaming graphics and improve the latency between CPU/GPU. Cloud computing is much more advanced than that as it offloads a lot of computing on external servers. It's like adding extra power to your hardware without the need to actually change anything.

Except the CPU isn't as much used in video games as it is in other computer applications. You complain about CPU fetching, while not realizing that most of the problems in the previous gen were due to the lack of bandwith for the GPU, meaning you can't swap shit, meaning you have terrible things like "Can't holster your gun in missions" in ME3 or shitty textures everywhere on everything. The CPU doesn't do shit ("deciding what graphics to be shown", wow incredible, I have to move 8 bytes pointers around, so much fucking memory, I can't cache that shit at all) and it's easy to optimize the bottlenecks, because that's what VG devs do most of the time and they can do it efficiently on this gen because architecture is fucking peanuts, as opposed to the CELL for instance.

I'm a CPU designer and i think you're full of shit.
We invented a thing called cache exactly for this reason.

CPU asks for a dword, L2 cache fetcher fetch a whole block of data of Nbytes instead of just the byte as the next dword most probably will be in the block unless you're some sort of programming ape that reads the memory completely at random.

On the first read yes, will take longer due the longer CAS/RAS time, but as the CPU will ask for a bulk of data like 512 bytes, the memory will give em as fast as the CPU can query (due sequential access being fast), and the next time the program ask for the next byte/word/dword this access will happen on the block stored on the L1 / L2 cache instead of the memory.

You just don't have any idea on how irrelevant the memory speed is for modern CPUs.

PC's don't use unified memory. It's a different architecture. GDDR is parallel, often connecting chunks of ALUs to chunks of memory. Depending on the architecture this means that an ALU may only be able to access the memory that its "chunk" is connected to. Not an issue for an optimized gaming machine. This is the reason the entire gaming industry is screaming out in unison that the PS4s GDDR5 memory is fucking amazing, and the x1s DDR3 is a disappointment.

The RAM is high-bandwidth, and is super close to the GPU/CPU, since they're combined into an APU. Since the RAM has physically less distance between it and the processing unit, and since you can build a tighter interface between them (memory bandwidth is a modern-day bottleneck that will be combatted by this), you can accept the slower timings for otherwise speedier RAM. (since the overall timings can be reduced by eliminating transmission latency)

RAM is twice as fast. That's a big difference. The processor is stronger, but that's the least noticable difference. The GPU is 1.84 TFLOPS versus the X1's 1.23 TFLOPS. That's a big deal. And since they use the same architecture, they will be optimized this time around. Game developers are developing next gen titles on over-speced PC's and then optimizing them down for each console. This means that the PS4 will always look better and/or have a better frame rate and resolution

In pratice the memory throughtput is almost the same.
