I've written a long post about depression for another thread about Fish that got deleted, so I'll just post it here. Maybe it'll help someone.


Another guy that was diagnosed with severe depression here. I'm starting to get my life together with 24 years, and here's the most helpful tip I can give:

Depression is definitely a real disease, but the way we treat depressed people is wrong. I got told that I couldn't do anything about it, that I was just sick, that I will eventually get better by myself and so on, I was basically told that it's okay to be the victim, it's okay to let other people handle your treatment.

After two unsuccesful therapies I had a small epiphany. I realized that I'll always be miserable if I don't do something by myself and that therapists and doctors can't help me. Therapists and doctors don't care, they only smile and nod and say that everything will get better while it won't get better for you, only for them. They don't get paid for succesfully treating patients, they get paid for treating patients.
So I started by doing little things. I started spending less time on /v/ and more time playing videogames (I'm serious), I started doing sports, I started cleaning up my room, I got my driver's license, I managed to get a really small and shitty job as a paperboy (which has done fucking wonders for me. I didn't think I could do it, but I can.) and now I enrolled at a university to study mathematics. I'll start in October and can't wait for it.

So, being diagnosed with depression, can you say that drugs don't help you whatsoever with your depression?

I've seen a few people say that it doesn't work, and from what I gather, a lot of doctors just want to diagnose patients and put them on some pills, just to make money. When, in reality, some of them don't have actual depression, and now become addicted, and anyone with depression, will also become dependant on the drug, and they still have problems with depression.

What do you have to say about this?

I don't really have the medical knowledge to say anything about this. All I know is that SSRIs made me impotent, apathetic, tired and ruined my short-term memory. Didn't do anything to improve my situation.

I've been on an SNDRI for half a year and it's definitely helping me. I probably should've mentioned it in my initial post.
Most doctors are very reluctant to prescribe this in the country I live in, so getting it was sort of hard. Getting it earlier might've sped up my recovery.
I wouldn't say that it's the decisive factor that made me get better though, it's mostly a crutch to get started. Taking it without the resolve to improve your situation will probably not do anything.
