Whatever the low end / casual tech is in a cycle always gets replaced by the new thing. Not with hardware as it is now. People are still using first-gen iPhones and iPod Touches and just about every Android phone on the market has different hardware.

They're kinda like PC/consoles, in a way. You have the Apple devices. Fixed hardware, all running the same OS, several generations of the same base system (iPhone, iPhone 2, iPhone 3g etc) just like a Playstation. All closed systems, the average cnsumer can't reach the system's internals so the developers have a lot more security with their apps.
Then you have Android devices. The hardware in each can be drastically different, they're all running the same OS at the very core but each manufacturer has their own version they use. They're open systems which puts the power in the user's hands at the cost of developer security, piracy is quite easy for even novice users.

For smartphones and tablets to take over from consoles things will need to become a lot more unified. new iPhones/iPads will have to start coming out slower before devs can start making content for the newest devices only. Android app devs will need to start including graphics/general performance settings for the user to control before Android gaming can really take off. It's bound to happen but there are some hurdles that probably won't be cleared for well into the next generation at least and by then most people will own a PS4/Nextbox alredy and won't want to give it up for a tablet. I think the generation after next is when tablets will really take over. By that point the PS5/Nextbox360 will probably be tablets. Nintendo is already making the switch, and so is Sony as far as handhelds go.

Tablets are going to replace consoles. Its an inevitability that everyone is already planning on.
Nintendo designed the WiiU's gamepad as such for a reason. Its a transition to their next console which will simply be a tablet. They're already working on adding support for IOS and Android apps.
Microsoft is planning an Xbox branded Surface tablet.
Sony's Gaikai software allows their titles to be played on any mobile device, and they have a marginally successful line of tablets themselves.
AMD and Nvidia are both making huge pushes to back distributed computing, having a server take care of all your computing needs for you. This enables you to game on any device, and drastically increases battery life of mobile devices since all they're doing is essentially downloading a stream and uploading control input.

We already have 28nm Cortex A15 devices on the market. 20nm ARM SoCs are right around the corner. There'll be another massive performance increase from ARM's V8 arch, their first 64bit design. 14nm and 16nm FinFET chips are about a year away. In 2015 the latest high end tablets are going to blow the WiiU away in CPU and GPU power. Its nearly the middle of 2013 now, and we're talking about an iPad slaughtering the WiiU in gaming performance. Within 5 years we'll have mobile devices that blow even the PS4 out of the water while drawing just a tiny fraction of the power.
The devices are powerful enough on their own, but with distributed computing theres simply no reason to ever sell an expensive box again. Tablets and a subscription to a cloud computing service is the future. This is the last console gen ever.
You don't have to like it, but you don't have a choice.

Let's not forget that there is a major hardware change coming right after these consoles are done launching:
ddr4 ram, stacked memory, 20nm die shrink, light integrated circuitry, optical universal cabling.....SSD's being mainstream etc

The consoles have pretty much fucked themselves. They're going to be in this wierd weird "too late and too early" position. They waited too long, and then ironically, just not long enough for the next big thing and will be outclassed very quickly.

By 2016, an ipad with light integrated circuitry will absolutely dominate a next gen console. Chips will need less transistors to outdo the performance of current tech because of the massive increase in speed of everything. Desktop GPU's will literally jump whole teraflops in the space of a year.

It's going to be an awesome next few years for everything but the consoles.

I don't get why console fags don't want PC gaming to become the standard.

If it does, PC gaming will become very cheap (think 400-500 for a gaming PC) and developers will develop on them a lot more. You'll get the perks of console gaming (cheap hardware, exclusives) with the perks of PC gaming (cheap software, amazing performance and graphics).

The only reason you wouldn't want that is because you're just being a drone.

Infact, after the 20nm die shrink, it's entirely possible Nintendo will release the "Super WiiU" where the entire console is inside the gamepad as a digital only version and maybe more powerful and basically replace both the 3ds and the WiiU.

Nintendo may actually have saved themselves by releasing just a bit earlier and making the very clear move to tablet focus.

Im a PC gamer but I can admit the PC desktop will go away in some way. I can see homes being fitted with just some generic hardware hub like a a HAL or GladOS thing as a home standard like a water heater or gas bottle or whatever. Some sort of power render farm that feeds to all your home devices as an intermediate phase to the full on cloud future. I think the days of sitting at a desk with a box next to it will go away but not until after it does away with consoles first. Hard fact is developers and workers need....workstations. I don't get how you have such a horrible take on the history of PC gaming and the GPU market. Maybe because you're only about 18 and never actually dealt with it.
Back in the day devs wouldn't bother trying to make anything run efficiently on a low end or mid range system. They wrote sloppy, and relied on brute force of high end GPUs to get things running properly. If you wanted to play a new game you had to buy the latest $300 GPU. You couldn't sit around with a 2 year old GPU and expect to still play new games.
If there is no consistency in the market then this will always be the scenario. A bit of stagnation benefits the average consumer.

I have a 6100 (upgrading soon) and a 7970, I have a 360, PS3, and Wii yet I refuse to play them, I even rebought all the games I could on PC because the console versions are horrible, less than 30fps, can't play at 1920x1080 and of course the graphics are horrible, aliasing and shit textures everywhere, I can deal with the graphics but anything under 45fps is unplayable to me so the consoles just sit and collect dust, not to mention 75% of the consoles library "exclusives" are shooters which are course unplayable on a control after mouse + keyboard

It's a shame because consoles should be better than what any top-of-the-line PC can offer for video games. I mean, consoles are the signatures of the industry, not PCs. They should be fucking amazing with the latest in graphics rendering technology going strictly to them on first priority.

Regardless, I think a big reason why PC got so popular around that time was because of indie games. The internet hivemind kicked in and started railing on all video games this gen, nostalgiafagging over dumb shit like casual Nintendo and JRPG stuff, and then together collectively sought to abandon playing all AAA titles (which are primarily focused on being console releases) shifting to PC because of all the low budget indies emerging on it as well as the ability to emulate old crap endlessly. I don't get it. Aren't a good chunk of current-gen PC games also available on consoles? Dark Souls, Bioshock Infinite (if you're into that), all the GTAs, Fallout and Elder Scrolls...the only non-indie PC exclusives I can think of right now are RTSs like Starcraft and Supreme Commander and Dawn of War, MOBAs, Visual Novels and Eroge, and random indie games (some of which are also available on consoles).
