Turned out he turned off the game and loaded up the main save. Now, you'd think the fact that he was smart enough to, a; not save over the original save, b; reset the gameboy to play on the original save, would mean that he'd be trustworthy in terms of not deleting games.

Wrong. He later deleted my file, with a character with random letters for names. After that he was never allowed to play my pokemon games again. He never played pokemon until Pearl came out, but he didn't like it very much.
