In terms of story arcs, what's the closest thing video games have to The Wire?

GTA4 and the two episodes. A bunch on interconnected stories that each show a different side to LC.

It was silly/funny, not anything worth while.

GTA4's story was okay though.

If it seems interesting while you're watching it, close the tab and watch the show. You'll spoil a lot for yourself the more you watch.
>>

Meh, doubt that. A 5 star meal should bring something good for the brain too. I don't see a yankee cop series going that deep.

Just because I can't name a better show about gay faggot horses that cater to autistic, worthless manchildren, doesn't mean that one show is actually good.

Yep, a lot of people involved with Oz were involved with The Wire. Just don't confuse The Wire with being a generic American cop show.

I actually watched Oz as a nicotine patch equivalent for once I finished The Wire.

none, because video games are about shooting shit and the wire was about socio-economic and political character-based analysis of the city of baltimore

Radio, I believe. Also the whole Playboy X - Dwayne arc. Two street leaders, one guy being more of a businessman trying to make it into the real estate game while the other guy is/was in prison and is more of a soldier type reminded me of Avon and Stringer. Also the whole thing where in the end they want to kill one another
>>
>>173350942
There /v/ goes again, not understanding the meanings of words they use.

Breaking Bad isn't pretentious, it's popular and mainstream.

What's so good about this show? It has amazing writing, acting, and tries to show both fucked up sides of cops/thugs. It has branching storylines, subtle character connections, and each season focus' on a different aspect of the community.
>>
>>173350984
Oz fell off in the last couple of seasons. First few were glorious though.

None.
Most games don't have the time and money to create a storyline as long-reaching as the Wire.

Maybe the Ogre games.
>>
there is nothing like the wire.
I think it will take up to 10-15 years till videogames will step their shit up and will try to compete for a more "mature/demanding" audience.

still waiting for the tarkovsky of videogames
>>
>>173351472
I'll admit the ending wasn't my favorite but I liked every season. It's incredible to see how some people started out (tobias) compared to how they leave (usually via shanks, dicks, drugs, or some combination of that)
>>

Xenogears came and went nigga.
>>
Nothing. TV shows last years, decades even. You are comparing this to games that last 10-80 hours? Really?
>>
GTA could do it if they abandoned being fun entirely

so in other words GTAIV was the closest

What does that say about the medium then as a form of entertainment that not a single game ever released can have its narrative compared to a single television show's?
>>
>>173352356
i'm saying GTA still has to have ridiculous and "videogamey" shit in it to make it fun and the Wire is just gripping and realistic
>>
>>173352601
you might want to get some perspective about how long tv has been around compared to video games
>>
>>173352601
Nothing, because the mediums are different.
>>
>>173352537

>Tarkovsky's films are characterised by metaphysical themes, extremely long takes, and memorable images of exceptional beauty. Recurring motifs are dreams, memory, childhood, running water accompanied by fire, rain indoors, reflections, levitation, and characters re-appearing in the foreground of long panning movements of the camera.

>Tarkovsky developed a theory of cinema that he called "sculpting in time". By this he meant that the unique characteristic of cinema as a medium was to take our experience of time and alter it. Unedited movie footage transcribes time in real time. By using long takes and few cuts in his films, he aimed to give the viewers a sense of time passing, time lost, and the relationship of one moment in time to another.
Up to, and including, his film The Mirror, Tarkovsky focused his cinematic works on exploring this theory. After The Mirror, he announced that he would focus his work on exploring the dramatic unities proposed by Aristotle: a concentrated action, happening in one place, within the span of a single day.

Xenogears got all that shit covered.
>>
>>173352601
You're pretty retarded.

The point I was making is that developing a story and character arch over 20 fucking years is much more viable than in a 40 hour long VIDEO GAME. Save thing with movies. You have a 2-3 hour long time frame to work in as opposed to a fuckign decade or two.

>>173352754
I don't think that's fair.

Just look at GTA4's script size. It's clear that many developers have the budget and the means to make such engrossing plot to a game.

Plus, looking at the majority of RPG games, it shouldn't be difficult to tell a complex narrative with the play time involved in such games.
>>
>>173353026
it's so hard to maintain quality for any extended period of time though

look at the Simpsons, or hell, Wire season 5
>>

>>173353316

>>
>>173352601
Television and film both went through decades of gimmicks, forgettable fare with little to almost no truly works of true merit before they were taken seriously as mediums for expression.
>>
>>173353423

And so what are video game developers' excuses for not looking at television's and film's works of merit and trying to attain their level of narrative?

TV specifically since you can flesh out a 12 hour game with about the same plot length as a good TV show season.

Stop making excuses for video games.

The majority of their target audience is for children. That's why they'll never reach the same level as TV or film.
>>
>>173354226
because the target audience is different. Look at all those triggerhappy action blockbuster ADAS idiots (even on /v/) who think devil may cry has good writing
>>
>>173354226
It has something to do with the quick explosion of popularity of video games. Before becoming full-fledged industries that worked on a global scale, TV and especially film was kept mostly low budget. It's also much easier for some random person to pick up a camera and create a personal statement than it is to create a video game, even a basic indie piece. These days, games are consistently high-budget and MUST have mass-appeal to make back its investment, or it's low-budget indie stuff that isn't as respected or treasured by the gaming press as indie film is by the film press. There's no incentive on either end to explore.
