>that feel when there will never be a good space opera game

Why, /v/?

It seems like such a goldmine. Why aren't there any good ones? Yeah, there's Mass Effect but let's be honest, it's pretty bad.
>>
Because a video game costs more than 10 million dollars to make

I wouldn't make a game based on the main characters. I'd make one based in the universe. Best I could compare it to is the Mass Effect, with more realistic gunplay and space combat/exploration of Freelancer.

You could have your own crew, be Alliance, smuggler, mercenary, or trader, and you explore the universe doing your thing.

How did it suck? It was great, it was fleshed out, it was unique and it was a fucking space western. I admit the characters and the chemistry between the actors really was the highlight, but the universe did not suck in any way.

This is why I like it. It was low-sci-fi, it was the future without all the bells and whistles you see in typical sci-fi. The planets were full of hicks and poor people because they were raised on those planets, they lived their just like we live here. People in western towns in real life back then couldn't afford a ship to cross the Atlantic, or a car. The same with the people living on the colonies, they can't just get up and leave the planet.

But anyway regarding OP's post. I agree, only I cant think of any modern day developers that I would trust to make it. Nobody seems to do sci-fi right anymore.
>>
>>174532203

I don't think the universe was interesting enough to warrant a game on it's own merits. I watched the show to follow the characters and Rivers rehabilitation. I didn't like Mass Effect for precisely the same reason in reverse, gorgeous fleshed out universe that's populated by aliens and humans with boring/melodramatic personalities, cliche back stories and ultimately hollow and forced relationships.

I've seen people recommend Farscape and say it's amazing. I've also seen people respond to them sayings it's absolutely no where near Firefly's level. I haven't watched it since I really don't like the way the aliens look, or the fact that it has aliens in the first place. Just something you might want to consider.

>>174534186
She's hot as hell be she has no personality to me. I love all the characters, but she was probably my least favorite.

>>174534167
Firefly's universe became 10x more interesting to me after I read about it more online. It actually is pretty detailed and fleshed out, but the show doesn't really go into a lot of it. I think it might have to do with the fact that whedon planned on having a lot more seasons to flesh it out.

But you're entitled to your opinion.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Space Pirate Captain Harlock
Irresponsible Captain Tylor (debatable, mostly played for comedy)

The genre is basically dead as far as anime goes at this point, but there were great ones in the past. LotGH is particularly amazing although you need to have a tolerance for slow pacing and a willingness to sit through a long fucking series (110 episodes, 50 episodes of prequels, and two movies - technically three but Golden Wings is terible and not worth watching).

So far Crest/Banner of the Stars could go either way. I'm enjoying it but I don't know if it'll end up being something I recommend.

Most big budget games spend the entire budget either on marketing, celebrity voice talent, or doing something mind-blowingly technical and impressive, yet still forgetting that they're making a game and not a tech demo.

If half the 20 million dollar games on the market devoted even 50% of the budget to actually making the game (not to mention spending more than 6 months of development time and just pumping out another empty sequel), we'd see some neat shit.

That aside, Star Citizen it looking promising.

I like that this idea is explored as well. I want to write short stories in a sci-fi environment where Humans have colonized other planets and one idea I have been playing around with is the juxtaposition of life on these frontier planets with little or no contact with the rest of the Human systems and life on overpopulated ecumenopolises. I think the only franchise in vidya which vaguely references such an idea is Halo, with the people on Reach and their culture and way of life.

If they made a story driven Firefly RPG I would shit my pants. The thing is, it seems like it would be 10x more possible than a a new series since the actors age wouldn't matter. That's basically the setting. Poor backwater frontier planets on the outskirts of the more high-tech, densely populated core worlds.

But Firefly is a character driven show. It's about the crew of the Serenity, not the universe. So while the setting obviously matters it's not the focus of the show and it doesn't go terribly in-depth on those sorts of themes.

Well since they're typically on the wrong side of the Federation due to plot they spend most of their time travelling around the frontier planets in their ship taking whatever work they can get. The only character for whom the whole frontier/core divide has a lot of significance is Simon, since he grew up rich on a core world and is now flying around on the frontier with the others.

Fourteen episodes and a movie weren't really enough time to explore those kind of themes in great detail. Fucking Fox.

Malcolm Reynolds (the captain) is a former Independent Brown Coat soldier from the war for Independence that led to the Unification of a bunch of systems under the Alliance. He hates the alliance, so he captains a ship (Serenity) and him and his crew do whatever work they can find around the universe. The show has a lot of focus on the characters just trying to get by and work.

That's just a little bit of how it affects the characters, I don't want to get into detail, you can watch the show to see yourself.

Listen up shitheads, it's history time

See this pic? It's a single sector from the classic tabletop RPG Traveller, the quintessential Space Opera RPG. The universe is at least 20 times larger than this (every dot is a planet, with government, atmosphere, population info, etc.) and a lot of it is incredibly fleshed out, having been "developed" since the 70's. It would be perfect to have a video game about trading, smuggling and doing odd jobs set in this universe.

AND THERE ALREADY HAS BEEN. If you want to you can check out the MegaTraveller games; they were DOS games where you generated your own crew with the Traveller rules, and basically got free reign in the Spinward Marches sector (within the limits of the story.

It has aged horribly though (to shoot someone you have to press the Fire button, move the crosshair to the opponent's tile without being able to move yourself, and hope that RNG doesn't screw you over. In real-time).

Anyways, that would be my dream game; a reboot of the Megatraveller games.

Why is that bad?

The whole game was designed around that. You start up a ship and crew and see what you can do with what you're given. Some cool shit happens and you probably end up getting a hole blown in your hull and suffocating while trying to repair your O2 generator which is on fire. Then you die and restart, and as you get more used to how the game works you learn to weigh the dice in your favour more and occasionally you might actually beat it. It only takes like half an hour to do a run so it's not a big deal to lose and restart, and losing tends to bring about some of the most entertaining situations.

Just because it has a heavy element of luck doesn't mean it's bad.

Well, I can understand not many people played it.
Episode 1 and 2 were often simply tedious to play and if you really didn't get into the story, it's really easy to drop. I forced myself to play through and finally got to 3. Oh god, the redemption. Episode 3 was so godly.

I had a rock-man crew member that bugged and would not go past the weapons room. Like, absolutely wouldn't go into the engine or O2 or anything. So I named him "BOMSRGUD" and left him in the weapons room.

Well, one day, a bunch of pirates come boarding my ship through the teleporter. They killed all the rest of my crew, but every time they sent a guy into the weapons room, it was clobberin' time. The fucking guy loved those bombs so much, he murdered every single pirate to protect them.

I lost because the rest of my ship was on fire, and the airlocks were inoperable, so he just sat in the bomb room and waited patiently. He died doing what he loved.

I want to make an X:Terran Conflict mod that fleshes out character interactions/setting much, much more. Wish I could develop background stuff going on like in crusader kings. Make it feel like a real universe full of shady characters.

Getting caught up in epic intrigue between different factions in the sectors. Helping an upstart pirate become the local warlord, only to have him assassinated by the old guard and now I have to flee(after stealing everything of course).

Am I the only one who didn't like the movie? The story was meh, kinda generic in a way.
They killed of main characters whit out a reason, and did it in a lame way.
Not enough focus on the characters, they basically just did what they had done before in the show, no character arc's.
Serenity is too dark.
Suddenly sound in space.
Lame explanation for the reapers.

I liked it because it gave closure, but I definitely think it could have been better. Nowhere near Firefly's level. I just didn't like that they turned Reavers into the main plot point, and the whole "the crew suddenly HAS to tell the world about them" thing felt kind of shoehorned it. Why the fuck would the crew care about that enough to let everyone get pretty much near death to tell the verse? It didn't make sense. I liked it when Reavers were just an intimidating, mysterious force of pure terror. The scene when they first introduced them was intense as fuck.

Firefly doesn't qualify as a space opera.
Space operas need the good guys to be paladin-good and bad guys to be disney villain evil, and the story centers around the exaggerated conflict between these two forces.

In firefly, everything's grey. It can even be argued that the alliance is largely a good entity, with just a few bad apples at its core, and that Mal's crew is actually only making things worse for everyone.

Mal is not a goodguy. This is made abundantly clear especially in the comics

That was great. So I'm assuming getting all those Alliance killed was Book's mission from the Browncoats? And he became a shepherd out of guilt of what he had done?

I suppose willingly sending thousands to their assured deaths messes with the head a bit, even if they are your enemy.

I always thought he was mostly supposed to just report the goings on inside the Alliance to the Browncoats, and that he did what he did out of his own accord.
