Dev kits are being shipped in May. OR isn't compatible with Doom any more because they changed the hardware/optics. I don't know why they can't fix it though, the OR people might have fallen out with Carmack. It will probably be sorted by release anyway, and with the steam voucher you get instead you will be able to buy the game when it's on sale and have cash leftover.

Only Kickstarter I backed was Sir, You Are Being Hunted, which is shaping up to be amazing and I don't have any complaints. Except that I want more updates and the beta so I can play around in it.

I picked up FTL just a little bit ago and it's pretty fun. I'm looking forward to all the CRPGs, Star Citizen, Takedown, Throw Trucks With Your Mind, and maybe a couple others.

There's basically 4 different groups of people on Kickstarter
Group 1
>Well-known people/studios that have made some great games in the past but can't find publishers for their stuff cause it's too niche.
These guy's names are on the line. They get a lot of funds, but 1) they can't afford to fuck up 2) They actually know what they are doing
I'd argue Wastelands 2, Carmageddon, Planetary Annihilation and so on are good examples.
Group 2
>Guys that don't really have a lot of experience, but have a good idea
They usually don't get as much money, but the products can come out quite nicely.
FTL might be considered a good example.
Group 3
>People with limited experience that think they got a good idea, but the project might turn out less than what people expected or be a fucked up mess.
The Boardgame Katalyka comes to mind. Hoyl fuck, just check out the news updates.
Group 4
>scammers. Some even are known for scamming before. Unfortunately, they manage to still get funded, turn out a shitty cheap game (as they are not obliged to actually make a good one) and then enjoy their free money.
The guys with the LGBT Game. Obviously.

Now here's the issue:
Apart from group 1, you can hardly tell whom you're giving money to. Surely, there are some things that should raise red flags, but in many cases, the possibility of any Project falling in the unfavorable groups 3 and 4 is not always avoidable.

I'd say, with smaller studios that you do not know, you should avoid handing out money. As As for projects like Wasteland 2 and so on, I'd say you're quite on the save side.

Kickstarter is a great opportunity for niche-games to be made and for devs being free of publisher intereference to make the game the way they want to.
I'm looking forward to those huge titles, they will either break or make kickstarters reputation as a source for games/funding.

This is a good view about it. I would say that you shouldn't entirely never pledge to people who don't fit category 1 though. Kickstarter is meant to foster cool ideas and games that would never have been made otherwise, so only giving your money to established companies and people kind of defeats that purpose. The project that someone is doing with no establishment themselves could be the project that gets them established and could end up being a cool game. You do have to be careful with this though. The nature of Kickstarter means that there are going to be scams and they're going to work, but we'll get some cool games regardless of there being a few scams.

I'd say giving money to established companies isn't as much a problem, so them having vastly higher kickstarter-goals isn't really that much of a problem.
Smaller companies and groups can emerge as good companies, too. I guess if the FTL guys would get together to crowdfund another game (or maybe even FTL2), they could get more money as people already know they are capable of making a decent game.

I guess the big possibility of KS, is to allow devs to freely work on their titles and to allow inexperienced or unknown devs to get some games out and eventually emerge as well-known and respected dev-teams.

The quintessential thing to consider:
There are some people on Kickstarter that are so well-known and have such a good reputation, giving them money isn't as much a problem as giving them someone who's only a guy with a neat idea.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward on how this crowdfunding actualy pans out. Mite b cool.
