So yeah I'm reading this and I just found out there is going to be a motion picture adaption written by J. Michael Straczynski (Rising Stars, Babylon 5) now I liked Rising Stars a lot but I'm not to sure Straczynski can be trusted with someone else's work (see David Hayter's Watchmen script) Now I sorta expected this movie to be something like Band of Brothers with zombies (you know with reenactions of the events intersped with modern day interviews with the people who were there) But I'm not sure that is the direction there going in.
So /co/ can we trust Straczynski?
    p.s. to any whiners
World War Z is /co/ related because
there was a Zombie survival guide graphic novel
the movie is to be directed by Micheal J straczynski
    and zombies are board universal.

Isn't WWZ a Novel? Like, as in not a comic? As in not /co/ related? I mean, I could be wrong...

How are zombies still a relevant plot? I haven't seen anything different done with them outside the Romero trilogy. Except Dellamorte Dellamore, but zombies were really just a small part of the plot (just his job).

the plot of WWZ was about how the modern world would not be ready for any sort of world-wide epidemic (zombies in this case) and the likely turn of events that would follow.

I hate Max Brooks. Seriously. How the fuck can zombies survive at crushing depths below the surface where even a submarine would be crushed like a tin can under a tank tread? How can they survive freezing? What fuels them? Do the zombified cells cannibalize the non-zombified cells/bacteria growing on them? If so, how can they last an average of 3-5 years, and longer if they are frozen? And they do all that while not utilizing any of the flesh they consume for fuel, and without the benefits of aerobic respiration?!?!

from what I remember they could only survive under the ocean up to certain depths before they would be crushed
and as long as the brain tissue remained intact the would still be alive but not neccesairly functional they usually only lived until the brain rotted which could be slowed in cases of extreme cold but evn if the brain was still alive that does not mean they can simply get up after freezing only the parts of the body stil mobile continue to work even if the brain is still alive
as for what keeps the brain alive after the rest of the body is dead...beats me.

That was kind of the point. It got lampshaded multiple times in the book. They say that nothing disintegrates shit over time like salt water. The zombies lose all their clothes but somehow they don't deteriorate. They should have no energy at all since they have no metabolism but somehow they keep on going. Their senses should not work and their brains should be rotting but somehow they perceive and respond to stimuli.

I like zombies. The Romero films leave the cause of the zombies largely unexplained. People bitten by zombies become zombies, but so too do all the people who die, unless they're instantly incinerated/decapitated/shot in the head. Does everyone have the virus, then? Is it not a virus or any other type of disease, but some alien race's doing? A cosmic phenomenon? Divine punishment for a sinful world? We don't know! What's more, the ghouls are afraid of fire, and also retain some memories and habits from their prior life (although that never seems to stop them from killing former friends and loved ones). The unexplained nature of it, and their close proximity in appearance and behavior makes them so frightening!
    >> Anonymous 04/07/09(Tue)20:09 No.8946096
Really the writer is a pretty unimportant part of the movie. A good director can turn a crappy script into an awesome movie, and a bad director can ruin a script no matter how good it is. This will be worth discussing when we find out who the director is.

I still don't understand how the virus zombie is the common archetype in zombie fiction. Nothing survive off of dead tissue except fungi and bacteria.

Even more so a virus could only have a short amount of time to transfer the virus to another host. once the body dies so should the body. And the only thing that could probably control a persons body without killing it would be a suped up mad-cow disease or brain parasyte.

Well, viruses inject their DNA (or RNA) into host cells and "hijack" them to produce copies of themselves. Sometimes, viral DNA becomes part of the host's DNA. So, theoretically, a complex virus, or a group of complex viruses could change a person's nervous and muscular cells into anaerobic cells, etc...
