It will likely be a functional FPS with a 6-8 hour long campaign and not much more than that.

They'll probably make a good game considering they'll need to with the amount of publicity it's getting.

But I don't like how the majority of people only care about the character and don't give a fuck what the gameplay will be like, from what I've seen it's a comical action packed FPS, decent but nothing to cream over.

I just preordered it with two discounts to get it for $30 and I'm still not feeling too good about it. But it couldn't be any worse than the rest of garbage being released these days.

Duke Nukem Forever represents a shift away from many of the gameplay elements that I dislike and think pollute the FPS genre. Things like regenerating health, uninteresting settings and characters, unimaginative humanoid hit-scan enemies populating all the levels, a total lack of secret areas and levels ;_;, and unimaginative weapons and gameplay elements in the name of realism. I'm looking forward to Duke Nukem Forever because it looks to value originality and fun-factor over those conventions, and my hope is that the game will be successful and popular enough to start a paradigm shift away from those things. I keep my fingers crossed that Rage and Doom 4 will further such a trend if it exists.

The idea is that Duke is such a badass that getting beat on doesn't actually hurt him, it just hurts his ego (hence, the ego meter). In that context, the DNF health system makes more sense than most others, including regenerating health and health packs.

To all the people who are saying it's going to be shit because it's not going to be innovative, I disagree.

I think it's going to be really enjoyable and fun because instead of focusing on being some sort of brutal hardcore shooter, or trying to be the next call of duty, it focuses on something much more important.

It's obvious with things like Duke's one liners, the tri-boob alien boss in the trailer, the manly acts regenerating health, the field goal kicking of a boss's eyeball in a football stadium, and doodles on a whiteboard that the developers just really wanted to have a fun, enjoyable, laugh filled experience. Not addictive/competitive multiplayer, or tons of unlockable weapons and perks, just pure humor and action packed fun.

If you pay attention to the more aesthetically-coherent Doom levels, they are places (Sandy Peterson's levels not withstanding...). Knee Deep in the Dead is a moon base, and thus most of the levels are in sterile corridors and computer-filled rooms. The Shores of Hell takes place in a moon base that is in hell, and thus the levels tend to look like a moon base that is being taken over by hell's terrain. Inferno is fully in Hell, and the architecture is disgusting, bizarre, and abstract to reflect this. There are also some levels in Doom 2 that are clearly cities or industrial areas. Duke Nukem 3D brought a new level of detail to the table, I won't argue that. But it wasn't the first game to have levels that reflected its setting.
