I finished this yesterday thanks to steam's sale, and I think this game deserves more recognition.

Sure, the actual gameplay isn't really perfect, but neither was Bloodlines and still many on /v/ love it (like me). Actually it really felt like "what if Bloodlines had spies instead of vampires?"

It's probably one of the games with more choices (that actually matter) I've ever played, if not the one with the most, and it still manages to have a great story and don't feel too "modular".

It's not really the same thing, Alpha Protocol hasn't hubs where you can go around freely, it's mission based, but the roleplaying, the feeling it gave me is very similar to what I felt when playing Bloodlines.
    >> Anonymous 11/30/10(Tue)11:55 No.80033XXX
This game was 6/10, but would've easily been 8.5/10 if they had just fixed the bugs.

The bugs really killed it. That, and the horrifyingly stupid AI.

Aside from that, it was pretty fun. But the game ruining bugs totally destroyed what could've been a great game.

i really enjoyed it, but i went; stealth, no shadow operative, pistols, hack. everyone that probably hated it went in as run and gun. game play was a bit lacking but the overall the dialog system worked. bonuses from play style is always good. if it was more splinter cell/ hitman it would be a fairly solid game.

I didn't feel it to be a modern Bloodlines. The C&C was more similar to Deus Ex. If the game had been a bit longer and explored more of the C&C it would've gone down with the classics. As it is now it's only a game that I enjoyed playing through.
    >> Anonymous 11/30/10(Tue)12:05 No.80034XXX
It took the mess of a dialog circle system and actually made it good. Also choice and consequence is glorious in this game.

Too bad stealth is OP as fuck and combat in general is bad, AI is a joke. I still loved it because of the dialogues and the cliche spy story done good.
I love how you can even completely miss some huge wtf polt twists/reveals just because you took a different path.

I love that released a buggy, unfinished and shitty game for 60$ and then then not even having the decency to actually patch the game and then expect people to buy their next game for 60$.

The game had MISSING animations. I mean, turn left or right and there's no animation you just warp 90 degrees. The acting was awful and sound generally low quality. Gameplay didn't quite work and was the reason for some rage inducing moments.

Well vanilla Bloodlines was pretty broken too. I'm not saying this game is perfect, far from it, I just don't understand why Bloodlines has this huge cult (and I believe it deserves it) and AP not. My guess is many people were put off by the reviews and don't even take it into consideration (I did this as well), so I created this thread.

Awesome rpg. Turns easy as fuck around 1/4 of the way in. Played stealth and it's ridiculous I could pop my skill and walk right up kill people without anyone seeing me.

Also feels very rushed release, lot of things aren't fleshed out. Eg. G22 + Sis. She literally had no purpose in the game. A random goon could have worked in her place.

True, it's a game that's borderline unplayable and you really really have to squint to enjoy it from a gameplay POV, but it's a masterpiece as an RPG.
    >> Anonymous 11/30/10(Tue)12:19 No.80035XXX
I really think one of the the biggest problems this game had was with confusion over the shooting mechanics. Everyone seemed to assume they worked vaguely like Deus Ex's or Bloodlines', when in reality the tightening reticule signalled nothing more than your chance to crit. Accuracy was always based on your stats regardless of the status of the reticule. When it first came out there were all kinds of complaints about this, despite the fact that it literally was not the problem people thought it was.
    >>80033738
What game-breaking bugs? This was one of the few games Obsidian actually managed to get out without many serious issues. The only ones that really seem prevalent are the irritating engine glitches.

I really liked the RPG elements in it, and how they interacted with your character development. The achievements and other boosts were pretty neat.

However, the AI was so mind-bogglingly incompetent that it just didn't matter. After the second level, you were basically invincible.

Here's an example of when I knew this game would not be very fun to keep playing: during the mission you have to invade that dude's mansion to take him down (at the disco!), I was sneaking through a hallway that had two guards flanking a door.

I walked right up to a guard, and he didn't become 'aware' of me right in front of him until I was about a foot away. I then was able to do a "silent takedown" maneuver on him while his friend shot at me, except you're invincible during the takedown maneuvers, so the shots didn't do anything. I then ran around behind the other guard while he was shooting, and did the same thing to him.

Silent takedown on a guard I walked up right up to in a well-lit hallway, and then doing it to his friend who is shooting at me? Thisfuckingshitaintlogical.jpg

It's really a great game. The problem is that reviewers and some very vocal assholes on /v/ are addicted to polish.

Polish is the finalizing aspect of games that push it from a nice game to an AAA game. They're that extra focus on animations, tightening graphics, tightening controls, eliminating bugs. It really doesn't matter what sort of substance a game has, if it's polished reviewers and the mass public eat it the fuck up.

This is why Halo, Mass Effect, Call of Duty, etc are all widely loved, not because they have any real depth or substance or uniqueness (which are the aspects many /v/irgins look for and love) but because they are average games with a far above average layer of polish to them, mostly due to the very substantial amount of funding the development teams get.

I bought this on Steam last week when it was on sale for $7.50.

I've only played part of the tutorial level, but I've thoroughly enjoyed what I did play, and really really want to play the rest of it. I can't seem to get a smooth framerate though.

The first movie with the plane taking off stutters for about 5 seconds and then plays normally, and when I'm running around the screen jumps sporadically when I swing the camera around making looking, running, and aiming accurately almost impossible.

I even put everything on low and still no improvement at all, and my PC should be able to handle this game no problem. wtf :/

I'd argue with Halo, but you're right with ME and CoD (at least every entry aside from 1 and 4). A game doesn't need depth but they push incomplete and unrefined gameplay and hide it through copious amounts of polish. I love presentation in a game but what's underneath that is just as important.

obsidian is one of the last good developers out there (that isnt indie as fuck).

So many great decisions in this game.
Loved the weapon system. Pistols, smgs, shotguns, rifles all usefull in their own way. The upgrades werent
    >hurrdurrr +5
like in so many shitty games.
Choice and Consequence. Its everywhere in this game.

Loved the stealth skills as well. Very playable game with tons of different viable character builds.

Dialogue system was goldren, much much better than Mass Effect ever could hope to achieve.

The "minigames" were also great. Hacking and Lockpicking were actually little challenges and you couldnt expect to win everytime and open every lock (if you werent a pro lockpicker).

Again in comparision to ME2 where hacking was just a waste of time since it was so easy that it had no point at all.

I wouldn't jump ship with that post.

Obsidian has fantastic concepts but until they get more-than-competent programmers they're still down on the list. Not to mention they're slightly arrogant from what I've heard. they're not bad, they need to really refine their management and studio and programming to become great.

Also casual isn't a bad thing.... it's just terrible in certain aspects. Case in point is Mass Effect. What happened to AP gameplay is what should've been ME, albeit more refined, not scrapping literally EVERYTHING and just making the game a bare-bones shooter. Worse is that the story wound up suffering as well so there was literally no excuse for the streamlining.

The conversation system is how Mass Effect should be, which is odd because reviewers said AP's choices had no effect. They actually had more of an impact on the story, as the outcomes weren't obvious "HURR YOU WILL BE HATED FOR RAPING THIS BABY" or "DURR YOU WILL BE LOVED FOR GIVING THIS BABY 200 CREDITS". The characters (except for Thorton) were brilliant, particularly Marburg and heck (bro4lyf). The gameplay itself was a mixed bag. I played a stealth/pistol character, so when I had to fight early on in the game (that Arab boss) I was fucked. But then I got the chain shot and the aim crits from cover ability and became a rape factory. The final level was full of surprises for me Scarlet was the assassin in Taipei, Mina sent the initial missle attack, that old intelligence guy is a bit of a dick, Bromen is still a cool guy. A very good game that was hailed as shit by /v/ kids because reviewers weren't paid off to ignore the lack of polish, but which will become the new God Hand in three years, with all of /v/ claiming to have loved it forever.

I let the arms dealer live, but he got arrested.
I killed the muslim dude shaheed or something.
I was pretty friendly with everyone after that, even that guy that killed madison.
I let everyone but the guy i thought was trying to assassinate the prime minister live, killed him outright for all the trouble he put me through.
I loved how G22 and that mob guy both helped me on the same mission
I WAS LIKE WTF WHEN SIS AND G22 ATTACKED ME since i did russia after taipei

The Saudi boss is actually the easiest with a stealth build. Sneak up there and you take him out in a cutscene. It's actually very misleading since you get the option to respec after that mission and you're not yet aware that the other bosses can't be skipped like that.

Hmm I should have tried that. I ended up using grenades on him. Marburg was hard too, as I fought him before getting crit from cover. Russian man was a bit of a bitch at first, but I learned to chain headshots, run, wait for chain to recharge, and repeat. Omen was pretty easy, but I killed Leland the fastest because I killed him with 5 chained headshots and then a few random shots as soon as the battle started.

Got it during the sale as well. There are some things I'm not happy with, like the mouse controls during a hacking segment, but I love it, for the most part. Playing through as kind of a jackass. Willing to do whatever it takes to get it done, though that has, so far, rarely extended to finishing somebody off, since they're more use to me alive in most cases. Love fighting with a pistol and silencer, with Chain Shot, the rape train comes to goddamn town. Also using martial arts, which can dish out some pretty nice pain, but holy shit was the Brayko fight a bitch until I started spamming Chain Shot.

I like AP because it tends to hide its linearity when you replay it. Unless you make the EXACT same choices the chances are that the game will throw you a curve ball and change something depending on your current choices so it won't be exactly the same game except it's HURR GOOD or DURR EVIL run. Like, certain individuals will die, others will live, you'll get different backups and intel depending on who you're friendly with, etc.

Heck was an annoying LOLRANDUM fag and Michael himself is the most wooden main character I've played in recent memory.
He deadpans well enough sometimes, but I wish Mike didn't sound so bored in all of his lines.

The President. Leaving Deng alive leaves you a connection to use against Parker.
