Sup /v/. I'd really like to get into video games. I really would, but whenever I play a game and there is a competitive aspect to it, I just lose all confidence and give up because I tend to do miserably. This is partly because of the Call of Duty franchise, which also caused me to get sick of shooting games.

Also, I never played anything on Gameboy, or anything on N64 (i.e. no Pokemon or Super Mario) during my childhood, so it's hard to relate to a lot of stuff that's on here.

So what I'm asking is how you guys find a new game, and get into it?

If it helps, I'm an 18 year old virgin male, who is studying computer science, and is interested in game development in a few years.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/10(Wed)05:47 No.78171XXX
Then buck up and compete in the game anyway.

What's the worst that could happen? You'll lose?
    >> Anonymous 11/10/10(Wed)05:47 No.78171XXX
Come on /v/. You guys know your stuff... Don't yous?
    >> Anonymous 11/10/10(Wed)05:48 No.78171XXX
If you don't like the competitive aspect, play single player games.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/10(Wed)05:48 No.78171XXX
    >>78171491
    Yes, god forbid that.

And so what if you've never played the same games as most of the assholes here? I've never play a Mario game, I've never played a NES or SNES game and so what?

    So consider playing them?

Then you could possibly be a casual. Just throwing that out there.

    Also OP.

    >>78171525

    This.

Start playing RPG's if you dislike competitive games. Or action adventures. Shit like that.

One can only play a single player game for so long until it gets boring.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/10(Wed)05:51 No.78171XXX
Best way to do well in competitive games: just have a good time.

Seriously, I do my absolute best when I'm just chilling out and laughing with some bros. Let the beta waves take over. (I think it's the beta wave, might be delta or some shit)

And on the more retro games, why not play now? It's not like they 'go out of style' OP, Pokemon and Mario are as fun as Call of Duty any day.

Bottom line when gaming: just have fun. Let go. It's escapism, treat it like it.

You're asking how to enjoy games? Really?
    >> Anonymous 11/10/10(Wed)05:52 No.78171XXX

I assume OP means that just recently he became interested in the world of video game design, and this is why he came to /v/ with his situation.

If not, then he's pretty much just like everyone else in the video game industry.

That's when you put the game down or buy another one. Once you learn the style of games you enjoy, you'll know what to look for. At your stage, I just suggest experimenting with everything until you narrow down what you're interested in and what you're not interested in. Write down the genres of games you like.

After that, start browsing game sites and looking for games that look interesting to you. Hell, you might even want to do this now. It could give you an idea of where to start.

I've been interested in programming for a few years now, but it is just recently that I have thought about game development. After watching the extra features of God of War, and reading about the Crash Bandicoot development team, it seems like a lot of fun.

Really want to get into game development? Write some good indie games, don't waste money taking a fucking useless course.

    >how are you
pretty fucking shit to be honest

    >So what I'm asking is how you guys find a new game, and get into it?
word of mouth, generally. I mean, it's a heuristic that if a game has something to it, alot of people are going to mention it, and that has it's exceptions (either hyped up bad gamed or unmentioned cult classics) but in general it's a good rule. These are the kinds of games that will turn up consistently on best of lists.
Pokemon was definitely a thing you had to get into back in the day though. As a kid, slowly discovering all the mechanics and strategies was cool and rewarding, and if your friends played there was plenty to talk about, but the franchise hasn't changed much so it's pretty much the dominion of the fans.

As for the whole competetive kind of game, I don't know, it's hard to say unless I know your deal. In general, if you persist in any game you are going to get better at it. If you take the time to think about what your enemies are doing that's working, that tends to help. But honestly I'm not all that great at competitive games (I was really good at SWBFII a while back but fuck Warcraft ands it's 666 apm shit) but it doesn't bother me if the game is fun.

I say you fire up a few emulators (SNES and GBA are really quite accesible but there are plenty of consoles out there) and slam down shit like Mario 64, Yoshi's Island, nab Planescape Torment of GoG, get Half-Life 1 or whatever kind of game you're into and just play it. Experience it for yourself, and then get back to the games of the present.

    >and is interested in game development in a few years
you're going to be present tense interested in game developement in a few years? Blimey.

I've developed a sort of stigma that makes me feel like shit if I can't do well. I have a buddy that is really good at video games, and I became obsessed with beating him, because he made it a hobby to beat my best at most of the games we've played, whether it is killstreaks, fastest time records, in-game progress, or even more achievements.

I meant that I'm interested in starting development, in a few years. My university holidays start tomorrow, and I'm going to do a bit of tinkering with Python, since I've already learned a lot from my course. But, I'm going to try dabbling in C and Java too, to see what I can do.

I assume the average gamer is as good as him, because I haven't had the chance to encounter much of the average gamer. I have another buddy who is also excellent at CoD, and another who is a fighting/RPG master

It's possible they just play their game of choice more frequently.
I remember kicking ass with bryan fury in tekken 3 and then suddenly my mate has tekken 5 and I'm like sure, and he trounced me for a long time until I got used to it again.
Just...play games, if it's so important to you.

Also, for what it's worth, the average gamer is NOT supergood at games.

Also, whenever people go on and on and on and on and on and on and on about a game that I should play, it puts me off it, because it just gets annoying.

I have played and enjoyed a few games in the past that weren't heard of that well.

    Shadow Man
    Recoil
    Dungeon Keeper II
    Warzone 2100
    Lords Of Magic
    Carmageddon

These few games defined a lot of my childhood. I also played Tekken 3, but I had to convince my nana to get it for me, and I had Gran Turismo 3 because it came with our PS2. My mum (NZer here) never got me any big titles like Final Fantasy though.

Disciples is a game kind of like Lords of Magic

visit GOG.com. They have lords of magic and the sequels, and their catalogue might mention similar games, steam too.

Oh, and there were heaps of other games too, but I guess my gaming life kinda slowed down as I grew out of childhood.

    Crash Bandicoot
    Crash Bandicoot 3
    Crash Team Racing
    Spyro the Dragon
Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer (aka Ripto's Rage)
    Rez
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Jak II
    Jak III
    A Bugs Life
    Hercules
    Overboard
    Tekken Tag Tournament
    Tekken 3
    Smackdown vs Raw

    Demos:
    Kula World (aka Roll Away)
    Medievil
    Abes Oddysee
    Lifeforce Tenka (aka Codename Tenka)
    Kurushi (aka Intelligent Qube)
    Tekken 4

Most of these PS1 games I've re-downloaded from the Playstation Network

Learn to play games for fun, but stop if it really goes bad in multiplayer.
And if you're new to video games, get yourself PS2.
