you dumb fuck, the M16A2s/A4s/M4s that are issued today do have the
ability to fire automatically. The soldier is trained enough to know how
to conserve ammo. Also, the 5.56 round allows a single soldier to carry even thousands of rounds of ammunition without being weighed down In
a combat situation, you need auto fire, no matter what. Whether it be
suppression or just standard engagement, trust me, automatic fire comes
in handy and soldiers know when to go from semi-auto to full auto. That
being said, full auto is not always required considering in modern
units there is usually a man with an M249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon)
that handles suppression and high volumes of fire. The need for
rapid, automatic fire is essentially the reason why, in the late 50s the
US military invested in a 5.56-firing modern assault rifle instead of
sticking with the M14, which still operated on the 7.62 Garand platform.
THE MORE YOU KNOW.
