51 KB Do you think 4chan has improved over the last two years? Anonymous 09/23/10(Thu)18:40 No.73890XXX
Hey there, /v/. Thread title says it all, but I would also like to know what do you think has changed here.

Personally, I think the whole chan culture has become a lot less important — when I got here, you could hardly post without seeing someone talking about memes, accusing people of being newfags or gaiafags, etc. I don't think anyone cares nowadays, maybe because this so-called chan culture has been copied to hell and back.

I find entertainment on the boards I visist, but /b/ is just udder garbage and really gives the site a bad name. Also going on 420chan a lot, they just despise this place as a whole when there are some good boards on here.

But no, OP, it has gotten worse.

when 4chan started raiding in 2005, especially with big ones that were all over the internet like habbo hotel, the entire site was doomed

suddenly thousands of retarded manchildren started flooding the site spouting things like EPIC FOR THE WIN XD
by 2007 this kind of behavior was found all over the internet, no longer was /b/ the cesspool, it was everywhere
By 2009 it was done spreading into real life, 8 year old children spout memes while playing during recess, they base the games they play on internet memes and /b/ shit

I especially miss all the draw-whores. Sure, they were mugging for attention, but at least they brought original content. I miss Player 1 and the Ditto guy.

What's worse is that the vacuum is being filled by a bunch of morons shitting up all of the boards with /b/ material, hence the XXX and captcha. I'd rather have a slower board with a higher signal-to-noise ratio; at least then the threads with more potential have more face time.

The philosophy of letting people do whatever they want to promote people to create better content doesn't really work when there are hundreds of post every minute, shit threads that cause a controvert get bumped constantly because everyone has a goddamn opinion, and these are almost never about video games. Meanwhile, threads about video games, which generally are only cared about by the people who like the game disappear to page 5 in 10 seconds.

    I only browse /v/

but I can tell you there has been a HUGE improve in quality of post since the new mods, and ESPECIALLY when it's around noon Euro time.

Usually when it's late afternoon and late night Euro time (right now it's late night, 1am) more than half of the threads on page 0 are non vidya. At noon it's mostly everything vidya.

The biggest problem is that mods don't seem to really care. They see non vidya threads all the time without deleting them and only decide to take action in some cases (I'm basing this on how recently mods have started coming in the middle of long non vidya thread saying LOL IM GONNA B& YOU ALL, instead of actually deleting the thread asap and also deleting all the other non vidya shit on the board)

I think /v/ would be a much better place if people would stop trying to justify where they spend their money. You can't finish a vidya thread without trolling because someone didn't like the game and thus decides to ensure the world knows the game is shit because he says so.

Anyways, there was a time when /v/ roleplayed, talked about video games and it was a really fun place to be. After 2007, everything changed and now it's in the current state you see today.

My personal screencap collection has been lost, but /v/ was almost an entirely different place in 2006; a much better place.

Someday, I hope that will come back; that this is just a temporary era of shittiness and that all of the other veterans that left 4chan forever in 2007 will come back. Maybe someday...

I think this board would suck less dick if our idea of a discussion wasn't angrily responding to people whose opinions are different or dissent from the majority. In some cases it makes for a pretty good back and forth but odds are likely that you are just setting yourself up for an internet battle that goes nowhere.

All I do is post reaction images and add idle comments, I cant even reply to most of the shit that goes on because I don't care or I don't play many current gen games.

Much agreement. I love the Epic Fail Guy but the entire Guy Fawkes mask thing ever since V for Vendetta started showing up, things started going down really fast. At least back then it was communal trolling: now it's just guys masturbating to their self-proclaimed wittiness.

This is probably the only thing everyone can agree on: 4chan has gotten worse. These days you'll be lucky to find someone that's been here for more than 6 months: just start a 'how long you've been here' thread and be prepared for a flood of single-month visitors.

That said, the general amount of posters these days don't want a discussion, they want to show off. Get some jollies off of pissing someone off. Seriously, does anyone really find 'U mad?" funny besides the guy that posted it?

Back in 2004/2005 all of 4chan was largely homogeneous. There were differences between the boards, but everyone on that board was the same. /v/, for instance, was mostly a PS2 board with a significant GCN minority. No threads that would not interest this group existed.

Then /b/ rolled in in summer 2006 and everything turned to shit. Basically, /b/tards were sick of newfags and came to /v/ to turn it into old /b/. It took about a year for these faggots to finally realize that the rest of 4chan is not /b/.

Ever since then it's been a constant strain because moot never actually bothered to moderate /v/ (never tried to get mods who actually browsed /v/) and as the population increased /v/ became more and more the /v/ - General Stuff board. It became really bad in the past year until moot finally got mods on /v/.

/v/ was still shitty in 2007 and 2008.
Remember misnamed reactions? They literally derailed ANY THREAD.
There were still 50+ "Post funny TF2 picture" threads, Japan time, while fun, still had people posting the same info over and over even the day after it was announced, tripfags like Walter still existed and well, 2007 /v/ was shitty and good in its own ways JUST LIKE /v/ IS SHITTY IN GOOD IN ITS OWN WAYS NOW.
The only reason you think /v/ was better back then is because of nostalgia.

I'm not sure if you guys remember this, this was an image posted in a nostalgia thread back in 2006, talking about how 2004 was.

    Bad photoshop? Yes.
    Not /v/ related? Yes.
    Trolling? No.

It was a thread about making this empty Sister Princess wallpaper look snazzy, so posters just hopped on their photoshop or gimp and added something random and 4chan related, then the next person would take the image and go from there. By the time the thread died, everyone just had their lulz, which was a communal lulz.

I wish the community did something more than contribute to a thread by attacking everyone. It wasn't always like this. It didn't start like this.

This is the kind of poor reasoning skills I was talking about. Back when /b/tards started spilling out of /b/ onto other boards they could actually establish a justification for why /b/ was shit, even if most people disagreed.

It's shit because it's shit because it's shit because it's shit is not how it works.

I came here in 2006. It was different then, if you were new you shut the fuck up and didn't post until you knew what was what. Faggotry like excessive emotes and *action quotes* were flamed into the depths of 404 oblivion, being 'normal' just wasn't a common occurence. Girls were just not accepted. Period. We're talking the hay day of "no girls on the internet". Camwhore posts were banned at the speed of light, the ones that weren't were cruelly mocked. The term "femanon" certainly did not exist. Oh lawds, I laugh just at the thought of the shitstorm it would cause if someone had tried to use that term back then.

"Gb2Gaia" was probably the most used phrase on 4chan in those years. I miss those days man, its not like I begrudge folk using the site. It's a public site, but it's not the same and I miss the anti-social nerd orgy that it was.

lol, I sound like fucking Zaeed.

Was just waxin goddam nostalgic, browsed 4chan back in the day. Lots of people came along, but only I made it out alive that day.

I remember back in 2005 When I was a sophmore in highschool, I would think about 4chan all day, and as soon as the bell would ring, I'd go straight home and go to /b/. I would rage my ass off in serious discussion threads, laugh my ass off in OC threads, and their were a few select memes that really stuck and never seemed to get old. Now it's just gay porn, meaningless "laugh you lose" threads and I can't remember the last time there was a "serious discussion" thread on /b/. /r9k/ has serious discussions, but their all "WAAAH MY GF DUMPED ME I HATE WOMEN!!!"
As for /v/, it used to be 90% weaboo, and I personally thought it;s prime was in 2006.

I'm starting to think the speed at which a board moves is more or less inversely correlated with the quality of its posts. There was a sweet spot, a good compromise between activity and quality, and we've moved past it.

I'm guessing that, the more people have a sense of urgency when they post, the more they tend to fall back on the same old shit. E.g. stale memes, dumb highschool shit everyone can relate to, recycled topics, ps3 has no games, etc. etc.

Another speed related problem is that threads about obscure games get overlooked because they're swept off the front page immediately. This leaves people discussing the same five games over and over again, which gets people bored and start shitposting because there's no offtopic board aside from /b/ and /r9k/, where no one in their right minds go.

Personally, I think /b/ isn't as bad as before. They're ok these days. I've seen some good in /b/ from time to time. Like when some dude has no money to pay his next rent and shit, some ppl actually donated to him to help him out.

/v/ can also be ok sometimes. Like when that guy sent flowers to that company of heroes developer who died, that was cool. Tho most of the time it's just kids having console wars.

/a/ is ok most of the time. Keeps me updated on the newest anime and shit.

Overall, 4chan isn't as bad as what the news makes it out to be. But there are some improvements it could have. Like whenever you make a thread, the thread disappears to page 12 as soon as it's made, so it gets hard finding the thread you made.

It's been muddled up to such an extent it is too hard to define.

    There's people who don't give a shit.
There's people who think everyone rages about it.
There's people who don't know there are people who rage about it.
There's people who troll for fun.
There's people who think there are trolls when there aren't.
There's people who are 12 who don't what anything is.
There's attention whores whom which no level is too degrading to stoop to for attention (i saw a post once just replying to a reaction image where someone simply commented about them making that reaction image)

It's basically really confused and choosing which side you're on nowadays is as pointless as drawing with a broken pencil.

Imagine a ball. This ball is the internet when it was young and when memes weren't even called memes, they were just funny pictures you could find on the internet. You love playing with balls, right? you just can't get enough of tossing that ball up and down.

Now imagine this ball being covered in spikes. Each spike represents a particular annoyance, the spike will always make you bleed when you touch the ball.
One spike is troll threads, another is tripfags(remember lanced jack? I don't.) another is meme threads for people who are already sick of memes.

Eventually your hands will develop calluses which make your hands resistant to the pain of the spikes, and the spikes themselves become corroded from the blood and the blades become dull and blunt.

There is no more pain from the internet.
Unless you actively go squeezing the ball so hard you actually pincer yourself on broken old spikes for some fucking reason you degenerate cunt.

Nowadays people don't care anymore except for those who are late to the party.

Hell, ban buzzwords like hipster, viral, weeaboo, and such. Wordfilter even. The quality on /v/ raises IMMENSELY .

You can't talk about a Japanese game on /v/ without being called a weeaboo

Can't talk about a new/unrelease game without some retard screaming viral

Can't talk about a game thats remotely obscure without being called hipster.

The main problem is that /b/ used to be good. As it got worse, everything else got worse. It's sad to say, but we fucking depend on /b/ getting fixed if 4chan's ever going to improve. We're going to need mods banning people there 24/7 for posting anything unoriginal or unfunny. The remaining cancer will fuck up other boards for a little but with diligence it'll get wiped out. /b/ will never be what it was but it can be fucking funny again. Then /v/ and /x/ and all those other boards suffocating under 0/10 trolling are going to be fun places to go again.

I know moot isn't reading this site anymore but if he is we need to let him know that /b/ can still be saved. We need a psychopathic moderator. A man above the law and above morality who doesn't ban because he disagrees but because it's what he has to do - and he damn well enjoys it. We need our own little Dexter.

In fact, stupid facebook drama is a better part of *why* /b/, /r9k/ and probably /adv/ are how they are now.

The cancer has always been reposts, memes, and spam. No matter what time you thought 4chan was the best, OC, and original posts are the only thing that makes this place worth coming to.

Sure rickroll was funny the first 6 times, but when you post it over and over again for 3 years, you start getting tumors.

The cancer is accentuated by newfags who think memes don't have and experation date of 2 hours, and that they're real cool clubhouse members for mentioning it.

When something new does come along, it's spammed to death and gets old after about 30 minutes, but at least it's something new.

Did you just make a post in a thread? You are now unable to make posts in other threads for five minutes.

This will limit the whole "I must race to finish this post as quickly as possible!" effect. You're able to continue posting in your thread all you want, but you can't post elsewhere. If you want to be heard your post better matter.

Jesus Christ, this way of thinking is the fucking problem. As soon as someone's feathers get ruffled, they start screaming to have the fucking boards split. What the fuck, guys? You can't reconcile the fact that someone hates something you identify as good, so you sever the board? Ignore people who call everything weeaboo, ignore the fucking wrpg/jrpg threads, get on with your goddamn browsing. I want to talk to everyone and anyone about every type of game, that's why I like coming here. It's why I hate that there's a /vp/ board.

What's sad is that /v/ is good, every now and then, for a short period. Even certain threads can be good at any time of day. But they seem to go through a transition where they're shit on in succession, because people think trolling everything is necessary. There are also dumbfucks who don't understand what all trolling encompasses. They just fucking post nonstop constantly to everything. It makes the whole board shit, fast.

In the end, the golden goddamn rule should be taken into account no matter what you're posting. Captcha has filtered out quite a bit, and so has the hidden post numbers; but what we're looking at here has to be a conscious decision. You fags need to lurk the fuck more. Goddamn, the trigger reaction of the fags here makes this place just as bad as /b/.

tl;dr: LURK. FUCKING LURK. STOP POSTING IN EVERY THREAD.

There used to be a time when people were hassled for saying something stupid. Now we just greentext and reaction image everything, making it seem okay to be a fucking moron.

Splitting causes userbase problems. It also starves both sides of much needed attention.

If you are some guy who never plays one type of game, your taste would probably improve if it popped up in your face once in a while. Actually thinking that strategy games involve spreadsheets and then seeing a thread of everyone having fun with a game you never gave a chance improves you.
