    >APB has been a fantastic journey, but unfortunately that journey has come to a premature end. Today we are sad to announce that despite everyone's best efforts to keep the service running; APB is coming to a close. It's been a pleasure working on APB and with all its players. Together we were building an absolutely amazing game, and for that, we thank you. You guys are awesome!

From all of the Realtime World staff we thank you for your continued support.

Funny coincidence. I visited my local gamestop (disregard that fuck gamestop meme) today and saw APB cases placed as the third most sold PC game.
As I thought that the servers were already down I figured I'd ask the guy there, he must be the manager or something, as he's the only guy I've ever seen in that shop. He just acted like he hadn't heard anything about the crash when I told him that it was quite rude to sell it at full price when the servers where down/going down anyway.
I could see that he was bullshitting me, what a jerk.

by far the fastest mainstream MMO to close down, and its really no suprise to anyone who followed APB.

the designers simply wouldn't listen to critisicm, they like alot of other game makers think that what they are making will sell, and anyone who says otherwise, they ignore.

the game industry has been thinking that you can bite the hand that feeds, and slowly (i'd say too slowly) they are realizing that you don't piss in the money pot, and people will not ALWAYS eat the shit you deliver.

expect something similar with FF14, but much more drawn out and painful, due to the final fantasy name generating bare minimum sales, with a few STELLAR fucking MMO's being released, it will be crushed under the Guild wars 2, Cataclysm and maybe even Star wars might, as all of those listed games are better in nearly every single way.

all FF14 will have is die hard PVE fans from FF11, fans of the series in general won't like it, and anyone looking for high speed PVP, or even well thought out intresting high end PVE content will either not even buy it, or abandon ship instantly.

call me a hater or whatever, but I didn't make FF14 shit, the developers and designers did, and they refused critisicm, much like the APB makers, and they made the bed they are going to lay in.

    Hello there, buyer's remorse.

Surely, it must get better with a few patches! I mean they developed the character generation so much, they just need a few week to patch in more content! It was so much fun when the beta was out, people had a great time working in teams, you just... got a bit tired after the same missions. I'm sure this will be awesome again in a month or two. Hey look, a STEAM edition, I'l ltake that since I enjoyed the beta so much!

Agree with this. Unfortunately what this means is that we won't see an non-licensed-IP online game for years now, maybe if ever.

I think they would have had alot more success with microtransactions with no monthly fee. Then eventually they could have built up and added more varied missions, it would have been a great game.

    cont'ed

FF14 will mainly flop because they thought they could generate at least some success from copying FF11 (the funny part is, FF11 was never a real success, it could have easily took the market that WoW eventually took, and be what we call WoW today, but it went they way it did and we got... FF11)

the problem with copying FF11 and adding a few new annoying features was simple.

today the game market for MMO's has changed drastically, beacuse people who buy MMO's know what quality is, and what quality isn't, in this market, FF11 is now, after the fact, considered low quality, it did nothing that Korean developers haven't done for years now, it simply had the FF name draw sales, this was litreally its only holding draw.

FF14 will fail on many levels, its going to be like watching a complex explode from every surface, it will die in so many ways that people will have to study JUST how it flopped for months.

So investors would have wiped that money of their accounts long before now - they probably already recouped what they could in the winding up. That's the thing about investing. Sometimes you lose, big.

Also, FFXI is the only MMO to actually be story-based and do it extremely well. I expect XIV to be the same. No other MMO's PvE can compare. PvP is for 12 year olds and niggers.

    Why I think it flopped:

Screwed up pricing plan. You had to buy RTW points, in packs of 200, 400, 600, 1400, 2600. THEN, you had to use the points to buy game time. You could not buy game time straight up. You had to use RTW points. And the lowest action district hours was 20, and it was 280 points. So you HAD to buy the 400 point plan just to play at the end of 20 hours.

Beta? If you want to call it a beta. It was more or less the finished product. Hardly anything was changed and anyone that played the beta can tell you that. They had all that time and all that feedback and they just decided to release it instead of working on it.

The review embargo sure didn't help.

    anyone got anything else?

Lawfag here, those EULAs have a history of not holding up in court. If you pay for a service and don't receive that service, small print that says the vendor doesn't necessarily have to provide that service is often struck from the contract. This doesn't happen in contracts made between commercial entities with independent legal advice, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN when there is a manifest bargaining power disadvantage on one side - read customer and big company.

tl;dr - EULAs aren't worth the pixels they take up on your screen - IF one of the main conditions of the overall contract is broken.

i'm the guy you posted at.

and yes, this is what I am talking about, they REFUSE to even see that their game has a flaw, they actually believe that it will sell well.

who will they blame? its an mmo, they can't blame pirates, they can't blame WoW because they themselves thought THEY'D steal from WoW (hahahaha, I don't even like WoW but I can tell you why that'll never happen, WoW can polish an idea shinier than a fucking diamond, they can make a concept into in game play better than anyone, no one in the MMO market tries diffrent shit but them, everything else is minior compared to these points)

its like a train going 400 miles an hour towards a Nuclear reactor, but no one on board notices a problem, I can't wait for the fallout.

seriously, I can't fucking wait to hear this man stammer about useless excuses after the fact, pointing fingers at whatever he thinks caused the downfall of the game he created, instead of blaming the creator, himself, he'll just point fingers at the customers, the ones who define whats good and whats bad, what makes money, and what doesn't.

as if they should be pandering to him, when every other market in the world, you pander to the customers.

I'm kind of staggered by the people who think FFXI wasn't a total success for SE.

Just because Game A makes 10 million and Game B makes 5 million, that doesn't mean Game B is a failure. By MMORPG standards, FFXI was wildly successful.

actually yes, I can, FFXi was prime to take the market WoW eventually took, it didn't, so it failed, beacause the money was right there for the taking, everything was in place, the game just wasn't selling as well, for whatever reason it failed to seat itself on the throne of MMO kings and WoW did.

you can tell me a million things, but it doesn't mean shit in front of that fact, that it easily could have done everything WoW did finacially, but it simply didn't.

    >>73281214
sorry, but the market considers WoW to have the best PVE, and my opinion says as much as well, the boss encounters in WoW outstrip anything FFXI ever did, it was bland slow, and the combat plodded along, postioning ment nothing, it was a numbers race worse than WoW ever was in its very worst boss.

FFXI only has PVE, it has no mini-game content that anyone cared about, the economy was one of the worst in MMO history due to items constantly flooding the market, non-existant PVP (nowdays a deciding draw for an MMO, even above PVE).

FF14 could, potentially not do so bad that it needs to shut down, but it will, in the end, be as much of a success as FF11, hold onto about 40k-10k subsribers and fade into obscuirty and apathy, because no one will care about it, because it will do nothing exciting.

whatever it does, be it bad or good, it'll still do it as boring as ever, they learned NOTHING from FF11 and it shows, they deserve nothing more than what they had with FF11, if not worse for making the same mistake twice.

and you deserve whatever they give you.

except it didn't, it never even broke a million.

success is defined by the winners, WoW won and made the MMO market explode into what it is now, they define what success is.

FFXI failed, it had all the chance to do what WoW did before WoW did it, but it didn't, it fails worse than most MMO's because it had allthat oppurtunity, and it droped the ball, hard.

FF14 is, for some reason, copying past "success", in a market compeltely changed from when they made FF11, they think that somehow, an FF11 like game will float.

    guess what? it won't.

FFXI didn't fail, it was a great success for SE and made more money for the company that all of their Final Fantasy games combined.

WoW is the exception to MMORPGs-- not the rule. By typical MMO standards, FFXI did incredibly well, and still manages to generate a profit despite it being 8 years old, and playable on PS2s. That's crazy for an MMO.

im with you bro, people might say WoW is shit and that they dont give a fuck about it, but the fact is, WoW raised the standards for MMOs, it is the reason millions of people even got into MMOs, and Vanilla was probably one of the biggest accomplishments in MMO gaming industry, the game might have gone the wrong direction with the expansions, but does not change the fact it is still the king of MMOs, the day might come when that will no longer be true, but it will not be with FF XIV, maybe GW2 or even Blade & Soul or TERA.

I've no doubt Cataclysm will sell big numbers, and I myself am looking forward to GW2. I don't think any of the major MMOs coming over the horizon are going 'bomb' any time soon. FFXIV has its fanbase, as does GW2 and WoW.

FFXIV just needs to remember that this isn't 2001, and you can't rest on the laurels of GRORIOUS NIPPON to assure success. The focus of game development has shifted to the west, so it would behoove them to not make the game so retarded in it's UI design.

They did say they were going to fix the UI design, so I guess we'll see what happens.

    odd.

you would think that after their huge flop they would milk it for what they have rather than shutting it down entirely.

hell, they could even make everything free and run a cash shop for special items and they'd still make enough for server upkeep, right?

obviously a lot of the development team has to go in the process, but it's better than burying APB as a whole... even though the game itself wasn't that good.

Not that that means they're still not making piles of money-- they're just probably not making the fabulous piles of money they were before, or if they are, it's because of their new cash shop.

I was actually surprised they went that far. Told them to scrap the real names shit and add a handle system, and stop pandering to the Facebook kiddies and I'd think about it. Fat chance, right?
