ok so we all know there are tons of WW2 games
    way to fucking many
But why aren't there WW1 games? It's like the war got the short stick or something.

All soldiers did in world war one was stand in trenches and suicide run to the enemy's trenches.

    lrn 2 trench warfare

Because sitting in trenches while being bombarded with artillery shells and mustard gas doesn't make for fun gameplay.

I guess there are a few WW1 games out there, but the only I could think of were flash games. Warfare 1917 is kind of fun; it's a flash game

    >> Anonymous 09/13/10(Mon)05:51 No.72994XXX
    The gameplay would be all
    >stay entrenched
    >come out to run into a machine gun
    >get mutilated or die
    >change character
    >die again

Plus unlike WWII there aren't many hollywood movies about it, so game devs with the little imagination they have couldn't just ripoff save private ryan and get away with it.

Red Baron 3D, bro, I lost an entire summer to that when I was a lad

Also, I think there haven't been any WWI games mainly because it's not fun to be shot in the stomach, have a "doctor" come over and basically bless you, then grunt for four hours until you die in agony

now, if you ask me, WWI is absolutely ripe for some sci-fi elements to make a great setting for an awesome game. i mean, i personally really like heavy metal (the magazine), not just because it's full of tits, and i remember reading one comic where the Germans had assembled a steam-powered warbot. THAT shit is badass.

WW1 was mostly trench warfare which wouldn't necessarily make for good gameplay. There's no hollywood movies to rip off such as Saving Private Ryan. In fact Stephen Spielberg created pretty much the game that started it all for WWII games, MoH.

Americans also didn't get involved till late in the war, and were pretty much supporting both sides until they decided to join with the British, and as others have said there really wasn't any 'evil' sides you could set up.

    >The dry chalk of the Somme was especially suited to mining, but with the aid of pumps, it was also possible to mine in the sodden clay of Flanders.Specialist tunneling companies, usually made up of men who had been miners in civilian life, would dig tunnels under no man's land and beneath the enemy's trenches. These mines would then be packed with explosives and detonated, producing a large crater. The crater served two purposes: it could destroy or breach the enemy's trench and, by virtue of the raised lip that they produced, could provide a ready-made "trench" closer to the enemy's line. When a mine was detonated, both sides would race to occupy and fortify the crater.

Problem is that dreadnaught era combat basically consisted of shooting at a speck on the horizon for 3 hours straight.

Compound that with the fact that outcome of Jutland was basically inconclusive. You'd have to completely butcher it to the degree that it would really have nothing in common with the real battle except the name to make it any fun.

I mean like Battlefield Midway, but without subs or aircraft, and in a battle of almost 200 ships, 4 capital ships get sunk then everyone goes home.

I don't think it would have much of a story as explaining ww1 is pretty confusing.

It was basically, some country goes "were invoding your country" then that countries ally invades that country then so on so forth until everybody was invading each other.

    wait, that was pretty simple...

HOI3 is not the most polished game out there yet.

For The Glory, EU3 and Victoria Revolutions are much more polished and bugfree. However none of them handle combat as well as HoI 3. Crusader Kings is fun to be an evil dick of a king that shits on everyone and everything that isn't you family. It depends on what you are looking for.

If you want to explore/colonize the new world and rape the natives as Spain go for For the Glory.
If you want to be a dick of a king and have crusades go for Crusader Kings Deus Vult.
If you want to save Byzantium or other strange countries go for Europa Universalis 3.
If you want to do genocides, build steel factories and have military target practice on socialist rebels go for Victoria Revolutions.
If you want to attack the eastern front with customized massive tanks and experimental jets go for Hearts of Iron 3.
If you want a good multiplayer experience go for Arsenal of Democracy in ww2.

It isn't even adherence to precise historical accuracy.

There were almost 60 battleships and battlecruisers present, yet only 4 were sunk.

You want to make a game about a battle where two of the largest fleets in history sail out to meet one another, then decide they don't want to fight and turn back for port.

You would basically have to rewrite the terms of the engagement itself to make it engaging. You might as well just make a game about Leyte, which was considerably more decisive.

People have a general idea that WW1 is LOL TRENCHES EVERYWHERE but that is not true.

In the beginning there were no trenches. There were just big pushes.Entire start of the war with Serbs and Austria had little to none trench warfare.I can only recall one trench situation but it was not a long period and what followed was battle of Kolubara and that was just one big ass push. Also in the end on Solun front no trenches just big pushes
People are just ignorant. And there are no americunts in this war for the most part so they cant glorify themselves in this game.

American helped bring World War I to an earlier end and resulted in an Allied victory. The United States provided one crucial thing, a whole untapped manpower. For four years a whole European generation was wasting away. Plus on both sides the home front, absolutely exhausted, was wanting the war to end. Without the American entry, the war would have lasted longer. Maybe even an armistice that ended the war, nothing else.

The allies needed someone to blame, and Germany was the best target to pick. The US, Britain and France all agreed that Germany should pay for what it did to Europe.

You never heard about Operation Paperclip and the Morgenthau plan? You do realize that America did to Germany what UK and France had done before right?

It took until late into the 50's before the faggotry holding Germany down was lifted and then Europe's economy bloomed. Just like Germany always have lifted Europe's economy with massive exports whenever shit hits the fan.

All trench battles were fought by Western powers
All non trench battles were mostly fought by Eastern nations

So western developers don't want to make a game that will not glorify their people.Pure and simple. If americans landed troops there would be a WW1 game.If French and English didn't sit in trenches most of the time there would be a WW1 game.

Maybe some eastern game developers could do it.What are good Slav game developers?

    >if theres no way to make a good game out of years and years of trench warfare

You could. What I think you are implying is that there is no way you could make an honest representation of trench warfare into a good game.

I'd tend to agree, but there is no reason you can't keep the setting and build a fun game out of that. Even if it isn't necessarily an accurate representation of history.

There are a whole slew of absurd games based on the US's humiliating antics in the middle-east right now. Many border on the farcical and none of them are even close to what is going on there. But I doubt many people would pay for an honest depiction.

Remember faggots: during the start of WW2 the average soldier was outfitted with almost exactly the same kit as their WW1 counterparts.

Enfields, Colt 1911s, Webblys, 1903 Springfields, most weapons everyone is used to in WW2 gaems.

well that's where Storm of Steel comes in.
    >>72996651 mentioned it earlier; it's the memoirs of a German stormtrooper. He fought in a ton of battles and got wounded 14 times. Basically a developer could embellish the story a bit and have a game in the typical supersoldier style we're used to.

Of course they had one. They didn't really want it though. Churchill was against it but most of his staff wanted it. Aside from the actual occupation and hunting nazis for a year they didn't do much to either help them or fuck shit up.
Of course after a war inaction and indifference can be deadly.
