Am I the only person who really, really dislikes the use of smilies these days?

I mean I can read on facebook how more normal people type on the internet. Often in less than 2-3 sentences there will be an average of 1.5 smilies per sentence.

I mean, do people REALLY need smilies to let people know how they feel about something? Shouldn't it be up to the reader to be able to tell between the lines?

Pic is vidya related on the subject. It was more of a fun thing though and not unexpected from such a character.

well i have found that people can often misinterpret the line's context so a smily can actually help project a message forward

    >do people REALLY need smilies to let people know how they feel about something?
Considering that emotions are hard to convey through a line of text, yes. Yes, people DO really need smilies to convey the proper emotions to go with their words.

Deal with it, It makes me angry too. I've never really used smilies except in AOL chat when I was twelve, and even then I only used the accursed "^_^". Frankly I think you pick up the ability to tell tone on the internet without smilies as you hang around it, but the fact of the matter is that many people will not (perhaps rightly) take this time. Its just one of those things, either accept that or get a lawn and a gun so you can tell kids to get the hell off.

I use emoticons to convey emotion in text that may need to be emphasized in place of tone of voice. They help prevent sounding like an ass when you do not mean to. Then again, I make sure to word things properly to prevent from having to use them as much as possible, but some situations can't be avoided.

Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Emoticons are just something that children do, it's not worth getting annoyed over. They'll eventually realize that they need to convey their emotions through words and grow out of it like I imagine much of us here have. When I was 12 I used ">_>" at least once a paragraph then I realized that was stupid, like swearing frequently. It conveys your emotion but in a bland, boring way that can easily be misinterpreted.

All these posts for such a simple answer:
Yes, you can convey emotions through writing, but it's much easier, especially to modern computer users, be it kids, HIPSTER TRASH, or your parents who just got a computer and have trouble with the keyboard, to write a simple sentence and have a smilie show the mood they feel.

See how I added the word "bullshit" just to get your attention. It obviously works, but for the lack of better knowledge, you jump into quick conclusions about my very personality. Now see, that's where the problem begins when you're dealing with text. We could ramble on like the pretentious tea-drinking top-hatted monocle-wearing primadonnas we pretend we are, but this kind of writing often takes a lot more time when you want to express simple things like: I am of the opinion that First Person Shooters are good video games.

I could't imagine you chaps would really be writing in this very cring-worthy style when you are having a nice conversation with your fellows in the Microsoft Network Messenger or the Internet Relay Chat. A small, but innocent little smiling face will most often work with the same effect as expressing; Well my dear friend, I am quite delighted.

It is simply a matter of convienence. Crying about it just goes to show, that maybe you, dear good sir, need just to grow up.

Elitism for these kinds of things is what keeps this site afloat. Head over to /a/ for a second. While they still feel the summer faggotry over there, it's not nearly as bad as it his here? Know why? Because if you make a pants-on-head retarded post or use :3 people (rightfully) call you a faggot for it. Note that this board is about anime, which has one of the most notoriously bad fan bases of all time (see gaia, narutofan), and yet they manage to keep most of those people out.

Emoticons are the cancer killing communication. before emoticons, people conveyed emotion through pure written text, with fucking adjectives and proper sentence structure. People wrote letters for a couple hundred years without emoticons, and got by just fine. They are the devolution of the written word, they are the reason literary garbage like Twilight and Gamer Girl are produced and consumed in nonsensically large quantities. If you can't convey emotion through the written word alone, or can't understand when someone else does, you do not deserve a spot on this planet earth because you are contributing nothing to the advance of society.

How many times in instant messaging or forum use have you seen someone go off on a rant or some other BS only to have the person they're responding to say "I was being sarcastic" or "that was a joke"

Half of communication is in the voice and facial expressions, which clearly you don't get in text.

Again, I don't consider my writing "superior". I consider my writing "standard". It's by no means great or anything. How is it even possible that the ability to convey information using written text rather than symbols is nowadays considered "superior". Everyone who received a basic education should be able to do it. And this doesn't require great English skills either.
