69 KB HEALTH BARS IN FPS GAMES Anonymous 06/14/10(Mon)20:46 No.62794XXX
Hey /v/ remember Health bars in FPS games? well actually I guess since most of you are underageB&, no you don't remember, but the few of you here that do I have a question. Why the fuck did they take these out of FPS games today?

Srsly taking out the health bars in FPS games just made the games much much easier than they ever were. "LOL I GOT SHOT IN THE CHEST, TIME TO SIT HERE FOR 5 SECONDS AND BE GOOD AS NEW AGAIN LOL"

I remember when i had to actually be good at a game to not die, Go thru a room full of baddies and get shot the fuck up and have half my health left, go thru next room with the same thing, then I finaly get to the boss with only 5 health left and then it becomes time to just turn into a GOD kill that fucker without getting hit or ur fucked, or just start the level over again and make it to the boss with max health.

    TL;DR
    Health bars are for badasses
Not having a health bar is for casuals

The only upside for regenerating health is that they can actually have the enemies be accurate without totally raping you every five steps. I remember beating Turok 2 on the N64. That game had health packs and if you got hit too much in an area you were screwed because once you ran out of the very limited numbers of health packs you were done. And those levels were enormous.

So in a single player game I'm all for the regenerating health/shield. Multiplayer should always have health packs.

Health bars, timers, lives, and continues have no point outside of a pay-per-play arcade environment. Games today take the same mindset that America teaches children in elementary school nowadays: everybody wins.

They keep taking away the lose conditions and make it so as long as you keep trying, you win. Get shot too much? Sit down, you'll be fine in a minute. Heaven forbid you die? S'cool, the autosave was a few minutes ago. Die a hundred times? No biggie, we don't keep score anymore anyway. As long as you finish the game, good job!

Lives are kinda cool cuz they're like a limit on how many times you can respawn before having to restart the whole stage, but then again restarting the whole stage can be a pain in the ass.

    - It makes the games more casual
    - It removes challenge from the game
    - With a healthbar you had limited health. Without you have unlimited health.
    - It makes the games easier
    - It allows develops to be lazy to make different difficulty levels. Just increase the time before health regen etc.. Remember when increasing the difficulty would increase the amount of enemies?

/v/ complains that a HUD is unrealistic, unnessecary and hinders immersion.

Developers remove the HUD yet add indications of damage with an invisible health bar.

/v/ complains that it's unrealistic, difficult, unnessecary, unoriginal, etc

Developers retain the previous approach but introduce regenerating constitution.

    Guess what? /v/ complains.

Developers no longer care and now cater to a user base that was grown on games with similar mechanics.

Can't be said for multiplayer, though. The intensity of fights in UT vs Halo/MW2 faggotry is an absolute no-contest. Health bars and stage-placed medikits add a degree of difficulty (and strategy) to FPS multiplayer that the genre is currently lacking.

The key here is to walk a fine line between regeneration and required healing.
Halo 1 managed that, with regenerating shield (logical and okay) and non-regenerating actual health (also logical). It's also one of the few things Section 8 does well, too; shields and non-self-regeneratable health.
FEAR 1 did it slightly, healing slowly if you were below 30hp just by idling, on easy mode.

If you claim having to look for a medkit would break the flow of a fight, you're a fucking casual. Real players fight on with 30% health, and worry about healing later.

I'm not crazy MAD about this and I understand the argument that regenerating health prevents players from getting stuck in a hopeless situation but
    >have the enemies be accurate without totally raping you
makes the action extremely polar: if you're out of cover you WILL get hit but if you're behind cover you CAN'T be hit so it just leads to more chest-high-wall cover system gameplay as opposed to the classic run-n-gun, duck-n-weave type.

I remember health bars in FPS games, goldeneye had them, perfect dark had them. Multiplayer FPS still have health bars, but for games that have a good single player mode such as the Call of Duty series, especially Call of Duty 2, I think that is unneeded. As long you face a decent difficulty I'm OK with it.

Health bars are still there, they are just not as used as much as in the past anymore.

Classes are superior to any loadout based system, or picking up weapons. They're also more realistic.

they didn't make shit easier, they made shit harder. its called be a badass and not get shot? or be a badass and get shot and be able to maintain a good fight while searching for health at the same time.
or you just get done with a fight and shazam GARY MOTHERFUCKING OAK comes out of no were and shoots your 2 health left having ass.

    >being a badass
    >searching for health

There's nothing badass about going around the level while being shot at, looking for a healthkit.

Now getting shot, taking cover, then getting back up to lay down the pain. That's badass

Class based FPS games are sorta ok since I like TF2,
but mostly they are pretty damn gay and unbalanced, and require team play, and team play is pretty gay unless you're playing with a clan or friends.

kill person, 5 health left, noob runs up and shoots you
    get trash talked for sucking
but no, i want health bars back, buuuut what about doom, your health isnt technically a health bar... but it's better than regenerating

Making laps around a stage and knowing were everything is and then being able to actually get to it while all hell rains down upon you while you shoot back and kill shit is totally cooler. than crouching behind a block and popping back up with full heath and repeat

health displayed as fractions are still health bars.
but yeah when that noob pops out of nowhere and kills you and then proceeds to trash talk cuz he is so very skilled is very fucking annoying.

I think something like the original Mass Effect had the right idea. Although the combat system wasn't the best in execution, the health system was built on a great idea. Regenerative shields, health packs (medigel), but no instant regenerative health. Sure, it had regenerative health, but it was an armor mod or a class ability, and it only regen'd a little bit at a time, so you still couldn't just rely on hiding in the corner for 5-10 seconds and then come charging back like Rambo.

    >> Anonymous 06/14/10(Mon)22:10 No.62809XXX
Ummmm... actually I do remember, but not health bars.

There were health percentages, and games with different hit zones had a map of those zones that would turn from green/blue to red, but not really bars.

But your point stands. Regenerating health = ez-mode
    >> Anonymous 06/14/10(Mon)22:10 No.62809XXX
I didn't see anything wrong with the way regenerating health worked in halo 1, have a shield that regenerates, and then normal health, although the shield should have been much weaker.

I do and by God was it glorious! I'm all for smarter and more challenging enemies but sometimes you just want to rip as much shit up as possible and cause MAXIMUM MAYHEM. Lack of processing power isn't an excuse anymore not to bring back the hordes of enemies either.

last time I checked you have to RUN towards people to kill them(depending on the gun) or RUN away to live, or RUN to pick up weapons, or RUN to pick up health or to hide so you can regenerate your health.

Well I guess you could walk but that's too slow and you would probably die... O NO WAIT TRY DOING ALL THAT WHILE PRONE! THAT WILL DEFIANTLY WORK!

    >people mixing elements of different fps games

Psst, games like modern warfare would be impossible with non regening health. All the enemies in those games use hitscan weapons. You are guaranteed to get hit in some instances.

In games that don't use heath regen enemies are either melee based or projectile based. And generally the only enemies who use hitscan weapons are the weakest ones.
