So what the fuck IS viral marketing exactly anyway?

    This isn't a clever meta-topic, I'm actually genuinely serious.

See: Cloverfield Trailer, popular internet videos, people who come here and ask ambiguous questions about new games.

In other words, things and discussions that cause people to want to go and talk to other people about it.

It's viral because it makes people want to advertise it themselves after having been advertised to.

Actual viral marketing is when a fake article or something similar is put out that talks about something that would happen in a movie or game, but it makes it seem like it happened in real life. When done well, it gets a large number of people talking about the fake article so that when the truth finally comes out that it was just advertising, everyone is telling everyone about it and therefore are talking about the game or movie.

But isn't this just fucking marketing combined with word of mouth? Isn't this how ALL marketing works? Isn't word of mouth the kind of GOOD marketing?

Its what mad PC fags blindly bleat in RDR threads.

Advertising targeted at being spread by the internet, usually people hired to go onto popular imageboards and start up a topic proclaiming how great it is and unveil some features or some shit or a company sinking money into an ad they hope will become really popular and people will spread themselves

I think this is the most accurate post here.

Its just that /v/ doesn't really know what viral marketing is and love too scream VIRAL every time they see a vidya thread on /v/

Essentially, yes. The difference is that the discussion is usually initiated by marketing people pretending to be consumers.

It's really not that big of a deal, it's just that marketing fags like to make up buzzwords to pretend they're not monkeys with typewriters who actually have little to no influence over the success of a product.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/10(Sun)09:43 No.59309XXX
someone post that comic about pandemic.

    fuck Madagascar man
    >> Anonymous 05/16/10(Sun)09:44 No.59309XXX
    Okay so basically

Viral advertising is paid shills going around talking about a game when nobody else will?

Isn't that horribly economically ineffective though? A good ad campaign is a one off thing, and if you do it right, you don't NEED to pay people to talk about your game.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/10(Sun)09:45 No.59310XXX
    >>59309972

No, that's not what viral marketing is. Read >>59309357
    >> Anonymous 05/16/10(Sun)09:47 No.59310XXX
When we say "viral marketing" we mean "stealth marketing", which is where a product is hyped up with the marketing pretending to be a consumer and saying how awesome shit is. Some believe that big budget game releases are stealth marketed on /v/. I think it's plausible considering how popular this place is now, and how /v/ obsesses over new shovelware every couple of months when it's usually so elitist about new shit.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/10(Sun)09:47 No.59310XXX
Viral marketing does not exist on /v/, anyone who tells you otherwise is a faggot.

    Viral marketer.

    Anyway, it's basically online astroturfing.
