let me tell you a story.
The other day, while on my way to
class, there was an Evangelical preacher at a bus stop, telling students
how pre-marital sex and drinking (you know, the things every college
student does) will damn them to hell. As would be expected from a
liberal college like mine, a student stepped up to argue with him about
religion.
And they argued for a good while, the preacher
remaining firm in sticking with what he believed in, and the student
trying to counter his arguments with logic. What I got out of the whole
thing is that both of them were fuckwitted.
The preacher was
trying to scare students into believing what he was saying with threats
of hell, unsuccessfully, because no one would listen to his doomspeak.
The student was trying to convince someone so strong in their believe
that they discard common sense. The futility of it was astounding.
Is
it aggravating? Fuck yes. But if you try to argue with people who are
so head-up-their-ass about what they think, you end up looking no better
than them, even if you are arguing calmly. |
