That's never been an excuse for piracy. It's been a way to excuse sales lost against piracy.

Company sells a game. The game gets copied and distributed to pirates. The pirated copies do not count against 'lost sales' because there's a fairly good chance the receivers of the copies weren't going to buy the game anyway.

When a game is being developed, the majority of money spent is towards the actual development of the game, not the production of physical copies. You don't pay $30-50 for the disc and the box, you pay that money for the actual game- the data contained on that disc.

I really couldn't care less if you pirate. I pirate shit too. Trying to justify it, however, just makes you sound silly.

    OP fails basic logic.

If you take the bread, the store's inventory will be lacking - SOMEONE will have to pay for that bread, because it went missing.
When you pirate, you COPY the information - you have a DUPLICATE - which means the original does not go missing. Nobody has to pay for it.

That's the difference. If you weren't going to buy a game, getting a pirated copy won't make any difference - the game will still be there for others to buy. If you weren't going to buy the bread, stealing it means nobody else will be able to buy it because it's gone.

    OP's Troll Rating:

Alright piratefags and moralfags let me try to explain this to you

Piracy (file sharing) does not steal an original copy, the retailer does not "lose" money in capitol damages, but they lose a potential sale

This in no way shape or form justifies piracy, piracy is bad but people will pirate.

But it is not nearly as bad as people portray it.

I love how piracy is compared to dozens of other forms of crime. Counterfitting, shoplifting, grand theft auto... it's not like those, it's piracy.

It is it's own form of behavior which you can not liken to any other form of crime because the practice of stealing intangible media is still pretty fucking new.

It started with floppy discs and cassettes, and has been evolving ever since. The internet has kicked it into high gear and that's where we are now. It's not like stealing a candy bar or copying words off a page. It's Piracy, and it is unique.

    Retards,

you only "DON'T WANT TO BUY THE GAME" because you know you have the option of pirating it

if pirating didn't exist, sure, some pirates wouldn't buy it, but a lot would, and developers would get the money they need to keep making new products.

But like with most issues, people don't bother learning about it and instead just repeatedly spout the same 1/2 dozen talking points for their side.

Well it is a problem and it isn't. As much as most deny it, generally you might buy a game if you didn't pirate it. Maybe you're just bored... you might regret the purchase, but it's a lost sale.

However DRM has nothing to do with stopping crack-using piracy. It's to stop re-sale and sharing of your games. And Ubi's newest DRM has worked.

I won't be sharing AC2 or Settlers 7 with anyone because I won't buy them.

It's not as popular with some of the mainstream publishers... however companies like Blizzard (Pre-wow Blizzard) produce games for the PC pretty much exclusively.

PC gaming isn't going anywhere. It's still the easiest platform to produce games on for Joe Everybody and the easiest to sell/share that game on.

And little indie game producers then go on to influence and create more games, sometimes for the PC. PC gaming is fine.

IMO, the less shitty console ports we get, the better.

See it's funny, the thought that companies DONT think of the customers only holds water for so many games and so many development teams. And many of these teams actually don't have that much funding to continue making games if they fall into the "indie" category.
Look at it this way; if you were to Pirate a game like "No More Heroes", you're not sticking it to the man at Ubisoft; you're telling them you don't have the time nor care for their product, and the potential sales drop. Even if you say "I wasn't going to buy it." What makes it any different from buying the game and then taking it back for a refund if you hate it? You don't get a cut when you return something during its allotted return time period, you would get every cent back.

You know why you keep seeing Madden, Imagine series, and bullshit mini-game collection on your systems and handhelds? Because they make money, the main demographic that wants those titles aren't pirating. This is the reason Wii Fit sold well; it wasn't marketed towards the customer base that would want to "try before buying". Companies haven't forgotten us, they've moved on to a place where they can actually see a turn out for their work. Which they don't get when they publish games for the "hardcore" audience. Mad World is a great example of somethign pirates fucked up.

Actually, there is. There are those rom dumps from ten or twenty years ago where, maybe - MAYBE - once a year the cartridge shows up on some auction site and goes for thousands of dollars. And then there are those "abandonware" games that get bought up by new companies and revived under the new copyright laws.

That's the sound of you missing the point.

Console pirating is not quite as easy or widespread as pirating a PC game. Sure you can find games for emulators, but it's MUCH easier to find torrents for PC games than pirate copies for consoles.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/10(Tue)15:22 No.57280XXX
    >>57280444
That's not really true. The actual losses most game sales take due to piracy has stayed pretty constant for a long long time, and while the developers blame piracy in the publics eye, I'm sure they know full well how bullshit it is since they have the real numbers. They're just looking for a scape goat to blame any failure on. The real reason that the console market is so much more popular with developers is because it's easier to make games for since they tend to be lower quality in various aspects, and the market is much larger since many people still think that you need to spend a lot of money to get a decent computer (which is wrong, if you know how to build it yourself), so they purchase a console instead. Since consoles are so much more advertised and popularized, everyone started to get one including people who have very rarely played video games in the past. Since these people don't really have any experience, they are much easier to dazzle with a shitty game. Thus, you end up with Modern Warfare 2 topping sales records, and thus you have more video game developers willing to put out games on console.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/10(Tue)15:22 No.57280XXX
    awesome trollercoaster op.

anyways, since it already been stated, i'll state it again.

pirating, copying, duplicating a game is morally wrong and illegal. taking a copy but leaving the original does not cause the distributor to lose any money, but they lose out on gaining any money from one or more sales of the said game.

pirating a shitty game that no one has bought or played or sold much is still a lost sale, and is even worse when someone pirates a popular game.

i.e: a million people pirate super mario galaxy vs 10 people pirating hanna montana's awesome spotlight game

    tl;dr stop justifying pirating

Immorality is all personal belief, so don't you think that forcing your personal beliefs on others is immoral? Piracy is the only way video game customers can send a message to video game developers making poor games. If they make a bad game, less people will buy it and more will pirate it. If you make a better game, more people will be willing to buy it and less to pirate. You can argue that some people will pirate your game no matter what, and I agree. However, the number of pirates does decrease when a game is more acclaimed, this is also undeniable. For this reason, piracy is a tool that the public can use in order to make sure that big companies putting out shitty products aren't going to make billions of dollars off exploitation.

they, unfortunately, are lying. the simple fact of downloading the game showed they have some desire for it, therefore they would have bought it.

Both of them are also wrong, because wanting it for free doesn't automatically mean I'd pay for it.

The problem is people try to justify it, which is what we're arguing about.
Everyone here should be able to agree piracy is wrong.

*plays all the way through the entire game*

THIS WASN'T WORTH MY HARD EARNED DOLLARS THE 30 HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT DOESN'T JUSTIFY ME PAYING MONEY

    You're stupid.

I love how everyone just conveniently ignores the fact that piracy is brought on by DRM, Shitty games and high prices, as well as the fact that companies without these things are doing just fine despite not "battle pirates".

Seriously, just be a half-decent company and the games won't be pirated, it's that easy.

Devs and publishers disagree. That is their product and it was stolen from them without compensation.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/10(Tue)15:28 No.57281XXX
From the publisher's point of view, there is literally no difference between me pirating the game and me not buying or pirating the game
    >> Anonymous 04/27/10(Tue)15:29 No.57281XXX
Not theft because it's legal to download shit for private use here.

You might not buy as MANY as you pirated, but you'd still purchase games to fill your free time with.

Just because you get something for free doesn't mean you wouldn't purchase it under different circumstances. That's a false sense of entitlement fueling thoughts like that.

Actually, piracy is basically the definition of copyright infringement...

Google "Intellectual Property Copyright Law" and read up if you don't believe me.

No shit. That doesn't mean there's enough of a desire to throw money at it.

    Simple fucking logic.

Why is it such a bad thing for customers to be able to not take the risk of throwing away 60 dollars on a shitty game? Why would it be ok for big game developers to put out terrible games that people are going to spend money on and be completely disappointed with? Do you even realize that you're part of the general public getting fucked over by this kind of shit?

there are games that you can get hundreds (or thousands if its an mmo) of hours of entertainment out of.

Then there are games that are good for a few hours and thats it.

remove piracy and the former is more than enough to keep people entertained, they were just trying the latter because "why not try it?"

with out piracy nobody would ever discover new good game series/developers
