I'm on XP, and for some reason, I have to stand on a pickup for several seconds before I actually get it. Not only that, my weapons make the "firing" animation, but nothing visibly comes out (and yes, I have lots of ammo). I don't even know if I'm actually firing. What gives?

UT has better guns than Quake. Quake was about memorizing gun respawns and getting to the best guns first. UT is about getting really good at your favorite guns. Most UT guns are crap until you learn their tricks.

For instance, the 8ball rocket launcher's main rocket does much less damage than a quake rocket. However, you can pre-load up to six rockets, and then either shoot them in a spread, cluster, or homing in on a target. However, once the launcher loads all six it automatically fires, so you got to learn how to time your firing so you don't waste shots.

Another good example is the shock rifle. Primary fire is a basic laser shot that does good but not great damage. Alt-fire is an energy globe that explodes for minor splash damage when it touches something. If you shoot the Alt-fire globe with the primary fire laser, it instagibs anything nearby.
