once you realize how well stories are done in real forms of media, you honestly can't go back to playing games for the story.

just play games for the gameplay now.

I generally look at gameplay first. The only thing that would make me stop playing a game because the story is god aweful, would be if the gameplay was only passable by itself. For instance, I loved kingdom hearts even though the story was WORSE than typical jprg shit. But I couldn't even attempt to finish Valkyria Chronicles, because the gameplay was only meh at best, and the story made it unbearable.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/10(Fri)01:40 No.55999616
the problem is people are trying to portray the stories in video games as movies.

What they need to do is portray these stories so they appeal to the sense of emmersion. That is really what everyone wants in a game. To feel like they aren't playing a game.

Dead Space was really great because it had great emmersion.

    thank you!

honestly you guys act like you have never once did something awesome in a game and think it was because of you. i.e roleplay?

you are Kratos, you are killing the gods. Don't tell me you didn't feel badass doing it. So immersion is important.

When you find out that Fountain was Atlus and he pretty much forced you to kill your father. Didn't you want him dead?

When Sephiroth descended from the sky and killed aerith, didn't you want him dead for that?

I LIKE VIDYA STORIES JUST AS MUCH AS STORIES I FIND IN BOOKS. TO BE HONEST, ONE DAY IN THE FUTURE I AM SURE THAT A GAME WILL CAPTURE MY READINGMIND'S HEART AND I WILL FOREVER FORSAKE MY FAVORITE BOOKS.

when i read a book i get immersed as FUCK. i've forgotten where i was after a long eyeball fucking reading session. while no game has made me forgot where i was(i only play games in my room typically) i have still at least played for many hours longer than i should have. so these facts here tell me that books and games have a pretty equal amount of immersion so unless you really care about literature and writing talent you realize these two mediums of storytelling are pretty much equal! you read/game to escape reality so they are the same thing to your brain!

This game just took a lot of shit from world history and set it in a future setting. Nothing original (humans create AI, AI rises against them, durp), but it was told better than any other game I can imagine.
