Played FFXI for years, then they announce this. With all the leaks coming out, it's gotten me more hyped up than I know I should be. It's really bad because I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment.

Has anyone gotten a few skills yet in game? Wanted to know something about the battle system. Can you only use anything when your action bar is full, or are there some skills that you can use independent of it?

It's split into "Weapon Skills" that you need TP to use and then "Job Abilities". Works somewhat similar to FFXI but skill chains and shit are better with Battle Regimen added in.

In the current shape its in, yes, you would be disappointed.
However, it has a lot of potentional to be something great. Once SE gets past these retarded network issues hopefully we'll get to see the game evolve into a great retail release.

Right now the only thing I can complain about besides the network issues is it's performance and the fucking emote window and the way the character creation works currently. The emote list seems like a really fucking slow way to use emotes... then again I guess typing them all in was pretty slow too.

So the weapon skills aren't on a cooldown, just use whenever you have enough TP? Do they reset your action bar as well?

Also what about thinks like Jump, or other things that offer buffs but not really any combat damage. Are they just on a cooldown, or do they require resources as well?

At this point im so tired of World of Casualcraft i would play FFXIV even if it was just a complete rehash of pre wotg FFXI.

Having everything handed to you on a silver platter for little to no effort is so frustrating and ruins the entire point of playing a MMO.

Was going to ask about the range thing. Maybe it was just because it was low level, but being at "optimum range" didn't seem to do any more or less damage with a spear. Just using bigger weapons meant you can stand a little further back. Wasn't something said about range effecting shit?

Im in the same boat as you, absolute top end pc, willing to spend 50-70 hours a week playing, played the ps2 FFXI beta, and had 1200+ days of playtime in FFXI before i quit.

More invites will be sent out with every phase. I don't think you'd have much fun with the state it is currently in anyway.

Alpha is mostly just severe network lag and PCs/NPCs not loading right now.

Once network issues are resolved they might start adding more servers and players in beta phase 1.

Yeah, you need to need wait for the action gauge to fill up before you can use the next ability, weapon skill, or spell.

I play gladiator and if you have a shield equiped you also get a second action bar for all the shield related skills so they're separate of each other.

Weapon skills take TP to use in addition and abilities like jump have a bit of a cooldown.

    So apparently:

the skills all cost a certain amount of points to equip like blue magic in XI. Seems that the basic magic spells you learn on conjurer can be equipped on melee classes (though they're not nearly as effective as they would be if used by a magic class).
    >> Anonymous 04/14/10(Wed)10:33 No.55804456
    >>55804337

Damn. Was really hoping that just your normal attacks would require waiting for the action gauge, and skills that use resources (like tp), or general class abilities with higher cool downs would be off that timer. Sounds like the game will be a bit to slow pace for me.

    Thanks for your response friend.

Maybe its because i spent a long time doing engame FFXI and WoW, both as a dps and healer in each game. Every single fight as a dps in WoW required you to basically spam one button constantly and press 1-2 other buttons every so often. It was so mind numbingly boring spamming for hours and hours while raiding.

FFXI wasnt perfect, but i personally preferred the way tp/weaponskills/magic bursts were handled as opposed to dpsing in WoW. Whether it be in a normal xp party or against an endgame boss, it made you feel as if every single hit was precious and actually meant something.

Really not much I can give an accurate opinion on right now. As stated before the game has a lot of issues server-side so monsters won't load and stuff.

Visually, the game looks amazing even if these screenshots aren't a very good testiment to that, it looks much better in motion. The animations are great and so are all the emotes. As far as developing your character goes, it looks like there is a lot more to put thought into than in FF11. You can distribute attribute points, you also get action points you can spend to lock in newly learned abilities to your action bar (macro bar). Some will cost more than others I imagine, you have 20 slots total to use. The details the game gives you on accuracy and attack are much more accurate than in FF11. There aren't as many hidden attributes and shit, which is one thing I always hated about 11.

Like I said though, different strokes. Don't want to turn this into a FF11/14 vs. WoW thread, as there are thinks I like about both, even if I prefer one to the other.

Think it is just showing the range of the different classes/weapons. Square has said something about certain things being more effective at certain ranges, but it is unknown if they just meant "you have to be in range" or if there really is a "sweet spot" for using each classes skills.

Spacing and position have a direct effect on damage and allow certain skills to be used in XIV. The game will show messages like "X hits Y from the far right" and whatnot. Formation comes into play for skills similar to XI's trick attack where a thief would stand behind someone facing the monster, use trick attack, and transfer the hate to the person instead of having the monster turn to you.

Yep, i totally understand what you are saying. As long as they keep the interactions and... i guess dependancies on other jobs in battle that FF11 had then ill enjoy 14.

As long as they focus on quality instead of making money, i know FF14 will turn out just fine.

Seeing as how your physical level (where you get to put stat points in every time it levels) stays the same when you change weapons/jobs (that when you level up you get skills from that weapon) it would seem that you are not too far off from the truth. As you would put your stats into where it is most effective for the main thing you want to do, and not want to reset them all the time (not sure how easy that process is going to be anyway).

The reason it's so much better on the magic classes is because their weapons grant magic potency and accuracy. Maybe they'll release swords that boost your magic instead of focusing on just physical attacks?

    those are the attack ranges
    positioning will be important
it will matter whether you hit something from the front or back (maybe different armor values/hit rate/damage. not sure about the sides)
there may even be an optimal attack range inside the maximum attack range (like lancers who get too close can still attack but with reduced efficiency. unconfirmed, only read it in some interview translated from jp)
some skills will let you take damage in place of a party member if you positioned yourself between the guy and the attacking monster
you have to be inside the aoe of some buff spells to get the effect
obviously aoe damage only hits stuff inside the aoe radius

I really can't decide which class I want to play. Pugilist seems cool but many of its abilities rely on unrelated effects, such as the enemy having debuffs on them or you having just evaded an attack. That shit sucks. Rangers have some really cool abilities too, but I prefer melee combat to ranged combat in every MMO I've ever played, and bows are like my least favourite type of weapon. Weapons are specific to classes so the archer will always use the bow.

If they release guns then it would be specific to a class like musketeer or something.

Another example would be Maruaders not being able to use anything except G.Axe. So a G.Sword would be an entirely different class.

Looking at the screenshots it looks like they at least put a lot of effort to make the battle system a bit more enhanced, and actually having quest making the grind a bit more fun and comfortable.

Guild leves seems just as I thought it would be, finally some quests and I'm sure there are many oriented in group forms and maybe some for instanced areas as well like limbus and so on FFXI.

If they can improve on everything from FFXI this will be great. Sure it'll be a bit of a FFXI-2 but I don't care, it could still change and I loved FFXI.

Although I'm a bit 'meh' about the soundtrack. Uematsu kind of seemed run dry of imagination now that he's made so many soundtracks, and thats not weird. Its not bad, it has a ew memorable tracks but to me, the trio who collaborated on FFXI made a pretty damn good job, Uematsu track were ace with ronfaure, airship etc, Mizuta had some really good tracks that really set the mood.

But I'm not gonna try judging before I hear it all in action, I'm sure it'll change then.

Balancing for PVP isn't impossible, you're right.

What is impossible is making PVP have no effect on how the PVE works as well. With PVE being the primary focus, they only have to worry about makign the classes work around that. PVP completely changes things and adds a whole other aspect to the game if its a major part of it.

Not everyone wants PVP either. If you do, then you need to find another game.

I've been playing games with PvP for nearly a decade. Balancing PvP is not easy, and it's even harder when you have PvE to consider as well. Every buff or nerf for one or the other pisses the other camp off and it's a swinging pendulum of anger and unfairness. If I want PvP, I'll go play TF2 or something. Exactly what I think. And this is coming from a WoW player on a pvp server. PvP and the fags that come with it have screwed around too much with the game.
    >> Anonymous 04/14/10(Wed)11:56 No.55809977
I had fun with PvP in WoW, no doubt about it but it all felt very broken and frustrating. Certain classes would be at miles advantage.

Sometimes you'd get the latest fashion in the PvP gear only to be owned by someone in fuck good PvE gear. A patch would come, one class would be fixed, but another 2-3 would be overpowered and they never managed to snag the right balance.

I liked PvE as well, but the community just seemed a bit retared in that sense. Finding the right guild was fucking hard, some didn't even get through Karazhan, some would raid 6 times a week yet suck balls and kill 1 boss a day in SSC for months and never really progressing, because there always would be one good to mess everything up. Had a lot of fun in it, but the community just really wasn't good and I think without PvP the community will be better in FFXIV avoiding the kids that just want to kill each other.
