All of the SaGa games play differently. The only one that truly classifies as awful is Unlimited SaGa, anyone who told you otherwise is a bad person and should feel bad.

Romancing SaGa is like a JRPG and WRPG's love child, where you are not set on any clear goal and are left to your own devices to pick up the quests you want to do or get to in time to do them. You re also not tethered to any characters besides the one that you choose at the start. The battle system is hard to explain, but there really is nothing else like it. I'd recommend looking at videos if you are actually interested.

The only problem with Garland is he doesn't get many useful attacks until you get to lvl 50 or so. The same is true for most characters, to a degree, but for Garland it's crazy bad. Spamming Blaze and Earthquake gets old fast, and his brave attacks leave a little to be desired. However, after that point he's a fucking beast.

But what I just did was I got to 100 with Emperor. Fucking RUN AMOK is much more powerful and fun than I anticipated.
