    361 KB DISTRICT 9 THREAD Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)11:40 No.5542952
Slowpoke here who finally saw District 9. Thought it was a great film but am unsettled by a few things:

    1. Is there any way to rationalize the alien fluid converting Wikus' DNA? Or are we as viewers supposed to suspend our disbelief at this moment?

I think this might be rationalized in relation to the fact that their weapons can only be activated by their DNA, so it might followed that the fluid derived from their technology contains their DNA... which simply has that effect on humans.

    2. Now this part unsettles me because my bro was talking over this, but as I understand it the aliens hovered over earth for so long because of an inability to take off (as speculated by reporter), or was this deliberate? If the latter, how did they go from being on board the ship to going to D9? Was it because they were starving and didn't take off because it would take too long to return to their home planet? If the former, how did Christopher so readily take off when he got back aboard the ship?

Go to imbd and look for the d9 faq on there message board. All of your questions will be answered.

    1.
Stop rationalizing Sci-Fi. It makes it fucking stupid and it's such a fucking neckbeard thing to do.

    2.
They couldn't leave, they needed fuel.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)11:44 No.5542982
    2. The smaller craft WAS the control center of the ship.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)11:47 No.5543009
I don't have a link to the explanation, but they said the fluid was a type of nano machine that kept the guns in good condition. They fix anything that's broken. Wikus sprayed it into his own face, it saw his DNA and was like "That's not Prawn! Better get to work!" That's why it started out on his broken arm.

That little ship that fell off the mothership was the control area. It isn't explained why it fell off, but when it did there was no way for the ship to leave. It was stuck in park for 30 years. That's why Christopher was gathering the fluid. To repair the control ship.

That makes sense, I suppose I should have made that connection.

Was this even established in the movie?
    >> Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)11:55 No.5543091
No, I think OP was right. Motherfuckers were all starving when first contact was made, so it wasn't the control shit preventing them from leaving. Try not eating the whole trip back home.

Doesnt say the ship in the movie was the control shit, so you can just as easily assume the prawn with the red vest just built it.

No it wasn't in the movie, but it was in an article with the director (I think) a few months ago.

    >As for the first question, don't rationalize sci-fi. It doesn't happen.

So like I said, we're just supposed to suspend our disbelief.

    >As for your second: did you not watch the fucking movie?

I guess I should have made that connection with the control ship. But there are still some unsettling things about this.

    1. The control ship fell before they were located to D9.
    2. Said ship happened to fall in the region where they were to be located in.
    3. They say most of the prawns are workers and have no leadership structure, so the odds of Chris being the one to find it.. and then bury it underground... while not impossible, rather implausible.

But I do accept the explanation about the control ship.

    >>5543133

you're right, like come on a command ship located outside of the actual ship... why not build it in the center

Did they ever say if the control ship fell before of after the prawns were relocated? I was tired when I saw D9 and I don't remember very well.

    >>5543188

if the control module is what prevents them from taking off, obviously that happens before they're relocated
    >> Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)12:15 No.5543264
    9) Who built the slums in District 9 right over where the command module fell? Very convenient.

The slums were already there. Many people were relocated from the slums when the prawns first made contact, because rights and property for the prawns was a big issue back then. The only change is that District 9 was segregated and walled off from the rest of society. Explained in the introductory documentary style clips.

I saw it as being like the keys to your car. The command module detaches to stop anyone running off with your parked mothership.

    >>5543239
Yeah, but I don't think they couldn't go home because of the control ship. If it was the case they would have stopped in space, not on Earth. They stopped above Johannesburg, and that's when the control ship fell off.

    >>5543311

The D9 site explains that the mothership auto-piloted to earth when their queen died. While hovering above earth, the control module just fell.

But I don't remember any mention of a Queen, but I was pretty tired yesterday.

Oh, look. Ebert doesn't have a clue about the command modules, he also thinks Chris' ship is of his own design.

    >>5543397

Implied, yes. But if the death of the Queen is the reason for them auto-piloting to Earth, that should be mentioned, dont you agree?

A Queen figure is absent throughout the entire film, so it's implied that there isn't one. It's not good practise to just assume there is a Queen based on the physiology of the aliens.

    >>5543409
    It's pretty clear there's a caste system.

Christopher is clearly not your run-of-the-mill prawn and Wikus mentions this when Chris asks "why?". Wikus gives the impression he's dealt with the "smarter" prawns like Chris before and immediately changes his tactics.

When Christopher is working on the device and trying to find more of the liquid he's got the other prawn working for him. When Chris is around, the prawn is pretty subservient and pretty much follows orders. When Chris sends him outside to deal with Wikus, the prawn (away from Chris' influence) loses his shit.

This makes sense apart from one thing:

How are the prawns reproducing after 28 years without a queen?
    >> Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)12:43 No.5543487
    >>5543463

Yeah, but I'm talking about the Queen thing. The whole reason for them going to Earth is because she died, but since there's no mention of her, how the fuck are we supposed to make sense of htat.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/09(Mon)12:45 No.5543497
Guise we cant infer everything, whether they have a queen or how they can mate without a queen, just based on their alien physiology... which we're supposed to liken to an earth creature that operates as a collective.

Am I the only one put off by the questionable writing in this film? Hell, not just the flat dialog, the actors nearly blew all their lines as well. None of the characters are imaginative either. None of them seem real, it just seems like they're desperately trying to connect with Middle America at every turn. Don't even get me started on the blatant political and Christian overtones.

    Here.

I'm not one of the guys arguing for a Queen. Though, even if there is/was a Queen it doesn't mean that she was the sole reproducer. A queen coul just have been an overmind type controller (like a Kerrigan in Starcraft). It doesn't necessarily imply she's the only thing that can reproduce.

No it wasn't. Like, at all. This movie has a lot of things going for it, but realism is certainly not one of them. Wikus was the only believable character because he actually spoke like a real person (which is understandable, considering most of his dialogue was improvised). Other than that, the writing was kind of lazy. But it's kind of hard to care when the movie is so much fun anyway.
