Never played an FPS before (they just never interested me), and I got TF2 today.

Can someone give me tips on how to control it/etc? All I've got down is WASD to move, click to shoot.
Using Scout for now, but I'll switch eventually.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)21:55 No.55295284
Just start playing, you'll get the hang of it eventually, learn your own tricks as you go.

    jump with space
    ctrl to crouch

watch other people play and learn tricks and tactics as you play.

Turn on fast weapon switching, as scout you'll need to switch from shotgun to pistol to bat instantly since the combat is so fast-paced.

Turn on damage notifications through advanced multiplayer options, you can also turn on an option that makes a 'ding' sound whenever you do damage. It helps you know when you're actually hitting your target.

Play arena if you want to get better at combat. Once you get the handle on the maps/basic strategies, try different classes. The best TF2 players can switch on a moments notice based on what the team needs.

    Have fun.

    Here's a secret most TF2 players don't know about.
First, go into your advanced key binding options and check the box that says 'enable developer console.'
Now, hit the ~ key to bring it up.
Finally, Type "bind x explode" (x can be any key) and then press that key while playing.
It gives you limited use of explosive ammo that does extra damage, but consumes your ammo count twice as fast so be careful.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)22:19 No.55297829
Join achievement server and boost all the milestones. Then put on the following loadouts:

    >Scout
All default, except for the FaN MAYBE (One or two people will yell at you but it's become somewhat widely accepted).
    >Soldier
    Direct Hit, Shotgun, OPqualizer
    >Pyro
    Flamethrower, Shotgun, Axtinguisher

    >Demoman
Default Sticky Launcher. Melee weapon doesn't matter since you'll never need to switch to it.
    >Heavy
Sasha, Shotgun/Sandvich, KGB. Shotgun and Sandvich is the only set of weapons where people won't bitch at you for using either one.
    >Engineer
    No unlocks yet.

    >Medic
    Blutsauger, Medigun, Ubersaw.
    >Sniper
    Sniper Rifle, Jarate, Kukri
    >Spy
    Revolver, Cloak & Dagger, Knife

Then proceed to play TF2 correctly. Remember to mock, ridicule, and insult anyone you catch playing differently as they are wrong.

So I got a job a few weeks ago. I moved, and had been without internet for about a week and a half. Internet was hooked up last weekend, but I don't do much after work but watch TV and get drunk, so this is the first time I've been on /v/ in well over a month. Saw this thread. Finally have money, can buy TF2.

This is officially the thread that caused me to buy TF2 finally

press the number '4', this is your disguise kit/cigarette case, it has a number for each class to disguise as.

Disguises drop when you attack, but fool sentries while they're on.

You can press 'e' to disguise as your own team color to hide the fact that your team has spies.

Don't disguise as a scout, you don't run fast enough. When you disguise as anyone slower than spy, you move at their speed.

Changing disguises causes smoke to appear around you, make sure you let it clear before coming out of hiding.

Press 4 to bring out your kit, look strait up, crouch. Congrats, you're now a spy-crab (youtube it)

I'm being serious. A mini-crit buffed squad of 5 or 3 Soldiers/Heavys can fuck shit up quite a lot.

You can use your electro sapper (shuts down sentries, dispensers and teleporters) without dropping disguise.

You can walk through your own teammates, but not enemies. People will try to walk through you to spy check you.

Your revolver is strong, accurate and fast, it's your first line of defense. Your knife is only powerful from behind.

The ambassador is great if you're a good shot.

The Dead Ringer is tricky to use and easy to notice, find some how-to videos before trying it out.

The Cloak and Dagger is great if you're patient.

I agree. Also, it's best paired with the standard rocket launcher since the extra splash damage helps build up RAGE faster.

I love the thing. Too bad that I've played maybe an hour since the War Update and spent the rest of my time idling while playing my 360.

practice more, FPS games can take time to be good at, especially considering most of the player base has been playing for a while.

    Play defense.

Pryo: Lite 'em up and let 'em burn. Ambush and retreat tactics.

Demo: Stick bombs (especially with the new Scottish Resistance) are great base defense. Also, pipe-bomb spam for area denial.

Soldier: Use the regular launcher and use splash damage to kill, you don't have to be spot on, just close.

Medic: You'll get plenty of assist kills and be a credit to your team.

Heavy: The king of spray, no aiming necessary.

Engineer: Let the gun to the aiming.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/10(Fri)22:48 No.55300486
Considering you have no experience in FPS and you're brand new to TF2 you picked the worst class to learn, Scout takes a hell of a lot more skill to be successful with than any of the other classes.

I've noticed people tend to stop aiming when they click the left mouse button to fire and this often results in the enemy avoiding the shot, thats why when using the shotgun you should fire directly next to the enemy in the direction they're running (if they're fast) or if they're a slower character then fire to the right side of their body if they're running right, and left side if they're running left.
