* Partner Pokemon return, though you now have the choice of sending a pokemon out to follow you no matter where it lies in your party, and also the option to not have any follow you at all. Otherwise this functions the same as it does in HG/SS.

* The pokewalker accessory is supported, but only in the same capacity as it is in HG/SS. There will be no new routes, pokemon, items, or any other new functionality. It will not be bundled.

* The third installment will be released as a 3DS exclusive, featuring enhanced battle animations.

* The game will be backwards-compatible for trading with GEN IV titles via a new function of the regions Safari Zone, which is a sort of combination of the HG/SS safari zone (with all of the crazy customization shit) and the Pal Park.

* The story's tone is "darker" and more "mature" than in the past, but only by a bit. Think Lavender Town.

* All pokemon new have "alternate" sprites. These sprites are obtainable either by pure luck in the wild or guaranteed by special breeding practices. An example of these is the notch-eared pichu in HG/SS. These do not replace shiny pokemon, and you can get a pokemon that is both shiny and alternate. The changes here are minor, along the same lines as the differences between male and females in some pokemon.

* Pokemon eggs now have different colors and patterns depending on what species is inside. Some pokemon also take more or less time to hatch.
