What's the low-down on the story this time around?

With the help of some people who know moonspeak, and Japanese Wikipedia, this is what I've got.

In the future, Earth (Inner Space) is in a kind of ongoing cold war with Outer Space.

In order to defend it from Outer Space threats, Earth has been cloned into 5 decoys, known as Sub-Earths ("achikyuu", clever nod to Achi in there maybe). The real Earth has been hidden away.

G5 are the people in charge of Sub-Earth #5. As a child, Isa was evacuated to this SE, where he trained and stuff and joined G5's army.

Prior to the start of the game, Kachi pops up on SE5. G5 know that she is from Outer Space, and is a "monster" taking the form of a human. They dispatch Isa to go and kill her, but when he finds her to be an amnesiac girl he cannot do it. Instead he grabs her and flees to SE4, which is where the game takes place.

SE4 is overrun with Keepers, results of a genetic experiment not unlike that which created the Ruffians. Isa and Kachi get shot down over an abandoned version of Fukuoka, and that's where the game begins. From then on, their aim is to escape and get back into space, although later on they have slightly different motives.

It's a badass unique shmup. Seriously, if this doesn't sell tons and tons of copies in the US I'm going to cry. /v/ had better buy it at least.

Airan talks to Isa in a flashback. Saki makes a very brief cameo in this flashback, in his monster form. It's not translated so I'm not sure what the scene's significance is yet.

SaP 2 quickly became one of my favorite games after playing through it. Don't speak moonspeak, is the story anything besides nonsense? And also, should I play SaP 1, or will I be disappointed?

After playing 2? A difficult question.

I think you should play it. 1 has a larger focus on platforming, as opposed to flying, and you might find that you prefer that approach.

But, make sure you give yourself a chance to get the hang of the controls (which might be difficult after playing 2).
