    Think of it like this:

Gran pulse is Earth, but after the humans fucked it up, the "God" created Fal'cie who made Caccoon so that they could protect the humans.

    ***SPOILERS***
but really you discover that they wanted to separate the humans into an inescapable world where they could populate and then ultimately sacrifice the lot when they were ready to blood-summon the God again to create a world just for the Fal'cie.

    Yes, that's the main plot.

Your characters start off trying to stop "the purge" (a fal'cie from pulse was discovered on Cocoon) and the Big Bad uses this as a means to start panic and chaos in Cocoon. The main heroes become L'cie and are given a focus. For a long time they think their focus is to save cocoon, turns out it's to destroy it. Big Bad says: Kill Orphan and destroy cocoon so I can meet the maker. Good guys say no. Get to the ending and good guys KILL ORPHAN ANYWAY

    >> Anonymous 03/19/10(Fri)22:24 No.53050395
Wow, you guys totally suck at summaries.

There are two competing nations. One is Cocoon, which like a hollow planet that people live inside. It floats over the other nation called gran pulse.

There are two types of cognitive species in xiii: humans and fal'cie. Fal'cie are immensely powerful magical creatures that have one task and are restricted to that only task. They can do nothing else, so they invented l'cies.

A l'cie is a human that was branded by a fal'cie and given a task and some of the fal'cies magic to accomplish it. To entice the human to complete the task they are promised everlasting life in crystal stasis when they complete it, but if they fail they are turned into monsters that are undying tormented souls.

Humans however view either conclusion to being a l'cie to effectively mean death, and noone wants to be one.

nope. Fang and Vanille become ragnarok, stop the meteor from crashing into Cocoon and turn it into one giant iceball (hence the game's logo). Everyone from Cocoon is transported to Pulse and they all live happily ever after. Fang and Vanille are frozen together in time to perform everlasting cunnilingus on one another
    >> Anonymous 03/19/10(Fri)22:27 No.53050634
The fal'cie wanted to destroy cacoon and its millions of people because the souls of those people would leave their body and return to the god that created them, and apparently with millions of souls going to that god at once it would split open a 'gate' into the beyond where that God departed to, or so the fal'cie think.

When Fang tried to destroy cacoon the first time when she turned to ragnarok, didn't it say that the 'goddess' felt pity for the people of cocoon and stopped her? So does that mean that the god/gods didn't really depart after all or what, or am I getting this wrong.
    >> Anonymous 03/19/10(Fri)22:27 No.53050660
    >>53050395

There are fal'cie of both nations. The fal'cie in cocoon make the planet work. They provide the food, weather, light, power, and everything for the humans. They built everything. Humans just live there.

The humans of each nation were taught that the other nation was evil and wants to destroy them. Cocoon was persuaded that any being from gran pulse would disrupt their harmonious world, so they greatly fear it.

A gran pulse fal'cie infiltrates cocoon, and the government of cocoon tries to clean up the mess. They are worried that the fal'cie could have corrupted (made l'cies) of anyone in the town that it had made its presence, so the gov't rounds up everyone from there and starts to kill them.
    >> Anonymous 03/19/10(Fri)22:29 No.53050870
    >>53050660
The main characters (there is no single protagonist) venture to this pulse fal'cie for their own reasons and succeed in destroying it; however, it turns them into its own l'cies before it dies. Their focus (mission by the fal'cie) is to destroy cocoon. Now they are on a run from the gov't.

Much of this story is based around the character's interactions with each other, and for the first 25 hours of the game they are simply are on a run from the gov't and growing closer to each other.

The entire game has this theme of doomed destiny. If they destroy cocoon, they become a crystal. If they don't they suffer a fate worse than death. Either way, they're fucked, and they hate it.

The main characters eventually escape cocoon and get to gran pulse. Two of the characters are actually - unknown to the player for some time - from gran pulse themselves and were given the same task long ago.

They all reach gran pulse in an attempt to escape their fate, as they are informed they are the only ones that can destroy cocoon.

It is revealed that the fal'cie of cocoon itself wish for the planet to be destroyed, so they have been assisting them. They can not destroy themselves because they are restricted to their own jobs. Instead they aid the l'cie in destroying it.

Cocoon fal'cie want it dead to revive the maker (the god that created fal'cie and humans). The only way to do so is to sacrifice all the humans that they have been specifically nurturing for exactly this reason in cocoon.

Anyways, back to pulse. The group ventures around pulse (this is vaguely unnecessary as a part of the story). They find that all humans are extinct on pulse. This is never explained.

Cocoon fal'cie eventually get the main party by convincing them that they have manipulated some humans in cocoon to try and overthrow the fal'cie leadership and destroy the fal'cie themselves (which would destroy cocoon - known to the party, unknown to these humans).

So the party returns, hunts down the fal'cie is manipulating them. They destroy him only to learn that the fal'cie which powers cocoon ALSO wants to die. They decide to kill him too.

The important line here is "we live to make the impossible possible."

This is all another big theme about the purpose of fal'cie and humanity.

Anyways, in the end cocoon is going to crash after it dies, but 2 of the party members use the magic they were given to destroy cocoon instead to save it. Those two turn into crystals.

The rest of the party are resolved of their focus without the fal'cie to bind them to it, and live on.

    The end.

Pulse fal'Cie turned them all (literally, each and every to the last one) into l'Cie and sent them onto petty foci to hunt overgrown monsters or some other shit like that.
Eventually most of them failed and turned into Cie'th.
There's a reason Oerba is overrun by them.

This is what mission summaries (that are all given in-character from pulse l'Cie who failed their focus and became the stone Cie'th you pick the missions from) suggest.

i'd have to replay the end, but they mention they were given a new focus at the end and receive the same dull brands that fang had. I'm not entirely sure what the differences are between a white and black brand, but I assume they were given their new focus by one of the fal'cie that perish in cocoon's aftermath.
Vanille and Fang were not given that new focus because that were not present for it. They instead were being tortured by orphan.
So those two still have the same focus, which is likely two fold: become ragnorok, and kill orphan. Both were accomplished, so they turn to crystal.

The rest of the party no longer has a fal'cie, so they lose their brands.

    My take...makes sense, i think

fal'cie are parallel and completely different beings from humans. They have separate existences and motivations from humans. As the player gets their take on the events from a human perspective, we, like the humans, can not fully understand them.

I thought FF8 was confusing. This is just getting ridiculous. I'm guessing that it makes more sense if you play through but the plot sounds fuckall weird. I mean the main concept of the plot sounds fine, something like demigods are pissed as shit and you need to stop it, followed by plot-twist from hell, but beyond that is just craziness.

it's actually relatively unimportant, which is why it was left out of the writing. It doesn't honestly matter what happens to the main characters at the end of the story because the entire thing was about the survival of cocoon and humanity's freedom from the tyranny of fal'cie oppression. Both of these were resolved in the end regardless of whether or not the characters themselves live on.

However, since the character writing in itself was the most impressive part of the story, and presented the other theme of defying fate (which was for them to perish), it could be equally important in itself. Their ability to achieve a new brand was defying fate. it was a justified story arch, and helped resolve that part of the story.

So the characters randomly and inexplicably (even by their own accord) turning for Cie'th back to normal and getting "a new focus" isn't a deus ex machina. It is the epitome of deus ex machina. They might as well have had the maker come down and resurrect them all then and there.

new focus from unknown source. the characters don't know how they lost their brands or how they got new ones either, and we don't because we see it through their eyes. All they know is they achieved the impossible, which is something they worked for the entire game.

One possible explanation is stated, however. They got their new brands from a fal'cie that perished in orphan's demise.

The story is also about the characters, if it wasn't the story would not be character driven and we'd have a birds eye view of the events taking place. But we don't, we have a personal view. Also, shit would not have been solved if the characters weren't deus ex machina'd into coming back to human form from being Cie'ths. The game doesn't even try to hide that it couldn't explain it.

Also, the character writing sucked. As I've said before. Characters were cliched. Their points of view on everything was cliched black and white and the dialogue was abysmal.

they were never actually turned into cieth. That was an illusion provided by orphan to destroy the wills of fang and vanille so they would become ragnorok. This plan backfires because they underestimated humanity, which is something that was greatly explained in the final chapter when they were talking to orphan.

But it's still a major plot hole because it's left unexplained. Character's couldn't explain it and the game didn't bother to explain it. Something that was that important (story would not have ended the way it did, if they didn't come back) should not be left for random (albeit good) speculation.

seriously, deus ex machina requires a god to fix their problems unjustified. Their survival was justified, and the way they did is explainable, but it wasn't, because we're are provided a limited perspective of the events from the point of view of the characters.

They did turn to crystal, they turned back. They don't know how, but this was nothing new by the end, as other characters had turn to crystal and come back already. You're just trying to make arguments here, or you have zero formal education in storytelling.

i can understand this point of view, and i, too, actually would rather it had gone explained. As usual, though, the story was written by multiple people, and i feel like the disconnect was present in the end. However, as i've been saying, the story does hold up on its own as justifiably constructed, but maybe not in the best possible way.

My overall impression on writing is that the story is intriguing but not great, and the characters are not great but very well written.

Deus ex machina means God from the machine. It was a plot device used in Ancient Greek plays. Playwrights would write their characters/story into a corner that they couldn't get out of and so they'd have a god come down from a wire on stage and go BADABING BADABOOM and thus resolve the conflict (usually the gods wouldn't be a part of the story at hand, but would just show up at the end anyway). Even during it's time, ancient critics mocked this technique. The term as now been broadened to mean any in explicable or sudden resolution to a major problem/situation in a story due to an abrupt introduction to a character, object, power etc.

FFFFFFFFFFFF, not only did that make no sense at all, it could have been left out entirely without making a lick of difference to the overall plot(which was also really dumb, it's like they intentionally screwed up the most awesome concepts they could think of as badly as they could)

    WERE FUCKED
BUT WELL FIND A WAY IN THE END

and i was hoping for some fantastic (excuse my puns) unexpected explanation for how they could live on that would also explain white brands, black brands, reviving from crystals, turning to cystals, etc, etc, but it wasn't.

I however was distracted by what i thought was a great use of fang and vanille's characters at the end, as well as pretty graphics, so i hold an optimistic view of the story.

    >seriously, deus ex machina requires a god to fix their problems unjustified.

No it doesn't. A deus ex machina just has to be any plot device that's introduced suddenly and abruptly that quickly fixes the problem in the story at hand (it originally use to mean gods descending from machines on stage, but it's been long since broadened).

    >because we're are provided a limited perspective of the events from the point of view of the characters.

We're provided limited perspectives in many stories. Doesn't make something less a deus ex machina. A story is based off the perspective it is told. If I tell a story from a first-person point of view and I'm about to get shot but suddenly you come in (never mentioned before in the story) and save the day, then that is a deus ex machina. Now, If I told the story differently and mention you and how you were tracking me down or tracking down the killer because he killed your brother and you got a tip from my mother that I was going to confront said killer and you raced there quickly, then it wouldn't be a deus ex machina. But perspective plays a big part in storytelling. Heros/villains can change by perspective. Take Paradise lost, from it's perspective Satan is the protagonist, but if I made an epic poem based on God's point of view, Satan would become the antagonist.
