Final Fantasy - was a good game
Final Fantasy II - tried something new, did not work out, but was still an ok RPG
Final Fantasy III - introduced the job system and laid some ground work for future Final Fantasy's
Final Fantasy IV - in it's time it was a massive triumph for the genre
Final Fantasy V - less serious story with a fun as hell gameplay = good game
Final Fantasy VI - very good RPG can't find many faults with this one
Final Fantasy VII - besides the slow start another good game in the series
Final Fantasy VIII - like II it tried something new and has split opinions on it, overall decent RPG
Final Fantasy IX - very good RPG among the best
Final Fantasy X - good transition to new style of RPGs, gone is the world map, in come beautiful graphics and refined gameplay
Final Fantasy XII - love or hate. this game's radical deviation from the series tried and true gameplay has people asking if this is truly a Final Fantasy.

See a pattern here? They are all good games, most having decent stories, all being very good RPGS. But the ones that went too far with new mechanics are the black sheep of the series.

Soon to follow seems to be XIII... maybe XV will be another homage to the past like IX was.

ok that's all, commence the typical My opinion > Your opinion

    IX had:
-one of the weakest gameplay in the series
-only like 3-4 characters actually developed in the main cast, rest was throw-away that got like 10 lines each
    -average story.

I really can't understand why anyone would put it among the best.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Completely deviated from the 'tried and true gameplay' of the franchise and did its own thing, and more or less beat the piss out of the rest of the franchise in doing so, but is never mentioned on a list, and is never considered an "FF".

What? Best story in the whole goddamn series. The game starts with the main character riding on a theatre ship and putting on an awesome shakespeare-ish play as a front to sneak in and kidnap a princess. HOW IS THAT NOT AWESOME!?
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)19:17 No.51865974
OP, I love you in a strictly platonic fashion.

There isn't a single FF in the main "series" that is bad. Sure, they've all got certain downfalls and some are better than others... but not one of them is flat out terrible.

My least favorites are III, VIII, and X. But they're still damn fine games. Even X-2 is good... best job system since FF V

I prefer XII's because I'm a huge Ivalicefag, but I'd say they're tied in terms of backstory and rich lore. With all the expansions of XI, it has an amazing as fuck fantasy story that most people overlook. But there's something of Ivalice that doesn't want to let me go.
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)19:22 No.51866496
    >>51866156

Ivalice is a massive clusterfuck of lore patchwork that keeps getting retconned with new races and locations that don't fit together at all.

I'll consider Ivalice having a good lore when someone manages to make something as simple as a coherent world map for it.

    FFX piss on this.
The gameplay of FFIX was slow and had no customization whatsoever and the game was far too easy as a whole.

The cast, except for Zidane and Vivi, was completely undeveloped and the story was far too straightforward and simple for its own good.

Vivi's story and development was about the only really interesting thing this game offered.

FFs are fun, combat is great, shitty RPG-wise. You don't decide anything, but instead watch the characters play through their lives. Still good games though.

never said it was graphics stop assuming.
i played the original on an emulator. it sucked hard.
grinding, no map, no story. all you did was guess where you had to go next by wandering and getting your ass kicked, talk to a couple of people in the villaige, something happens, and you get something so you can wander some more.
it sucked, i got up to where the dwarves had blown me a way onto the next continent, got horribly lost and gave up.

As of now, FF XII is the oldest tale, followed by FFT, and then Vagrant Story. The map doesn't change, only the location where each game takes place. And it's said that after XII there is a cataclysm that kills some of the races, and destroys airship technology, which is why there is an airship graveyard, and engineers are reviving the technology of old, like the guns.
