Except that grass pokemon will have the hardest time both on the psychic gym and the fire gym, and the elite four all have pokemon which are "super-effective" against grass pokemon.

It's worked out to be balanced like that - charizard and blastoise are two of the few pokemon which can handle the pokemon that are thrown at you towards the end of the game.
