Actually you may end up with a really small team in ME3. Liara, the human from ME1 who survived and whoever you managed to bring with you from ME2. You need at least 2 to survive if you want to survive the mission yourself.

The way I cleared the long-ass walkway with all the crates/stairs/husks/scions in the IFF mission on Insanity was by making a dumb bum rush to the end where the two scions are just before the door, ignoring everything and using a couple medigels to recharge my health and shields on the way. I died at the end, but the autosave put me back at the corner just before that and removed every enemy except those two scions and the last few husks that spawn when you go down the ramp. Then I just ran back and grabbed all the items/credits I'd passed before, and picked off the two scions as they slowly ambled after me from a safe distance. There are quite a few places you can abuse the auto-save in the game, since when it loads a restore point no "previous" enemies are ever retained.
