ME2 shows that reapers are created in the shape of the species melted down into them. My guess is that they were originally created as some sort of superweapon, and made out of a race of squid-people. That's why most of the reapers we see are squids. They're Gen1 reapers.

When Sovereign died, they sent Harbringer out to go build them a replacement, using the currently dominant species in the galaxy. In this case, it was humans.

Given this speculation/information, I assume that there were two warring species thousands upon thousands of years ago. Squid-people and something else. The something else turned the squid people into reapers, as some kind of ultimate weapon in the war, but then got destroyed along with them when the reapers went rogue. Since then, the reapers have been following the same pattern they were originally created to perform: destroy organic life. It's just taken to the logical extreme.

Let me point you to this dudes:

    http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Necron

It's possible that they were organic once and became the Reapers.

    Or.

Sovereign didn't lie, when Shepard asked him who created them he said.

    "We simply are"

Maybe they began as some sort of silicium/silicom/something lifeforms and eventually became this.

I think the "they're Mass Effect's Necrons" thing is more probable though.

That, is such a mind fuck its probably true.

Reapers are originally organic, they want to live forever so they become reapers. They come back every 50,000 years to stop civilizations becoming so advance that they themselves become reapers. The one thing that killed the original reaper was a human so they think fuck we should build a human reaper before they do...Shepard fucks them up, fuck it we will bring all the reapers to destroy them so they dont make their own reaper and fuck shit up. He never went inside Sovereign to kill Saren, he was still outside. On the citadel, area is called the Presidium.

The entire fleet was just the 5th Alliance Fleet, that was after an entire fleet of Geth almost destroyed the small outpost of Citadel Fleet.

Remember that the Citadel Fleet was spread thin because they were guarding Relays that led directly to the Citadel, Saren and Sovereign were looking for the Conduit, because it was the only back door into the Citadel no one knew about, thus it was unprotected.

Now let's consider that this thing have been going for over 50million years. Every 50k years they seek out the most distinctive species to make a new Reaper. That's 1000 Dreadnought size reaper.

Every council species is allowed 1 for every 5 Turian Dreadnought there is.

This makes out to be that there's less than 100 Dreadnought between all the collective species in our current timeline.
This isn't counting the Geth who have no Dreadnought and they specialize in small warships, meat shields.
The Rachni with their different technology.
The Krogan are not allowed spaceships as a race (Mercenaries buy them for themselves)
The Quarians have little to no warships (the entirety of their fleet is mostly living quarters and bio enviroments, considered of merchant and civilian class ships)

Our only hint of Salvation against that ammount of reapers, is a shitload of cruisers & frigates to disable shields and slowly consume away their armor. Like they did to Sovereign.

no they're not the good guys. they're bastards and they know it. they have to feed on whole galaxies and hate themselves for it. to stop this vicious circle they were looking for a way to kill themselves. how would they do that? by building a giant human, a ubermensch, because shepard was the only thing that could threaten them so far.

well, either this or they are thinking humans are superiour in some way and their plan to imitate humans seems to be a next evolutionary step to them. kinda explains a few things, they're not literally "eating" all these species, but rather use them as "material" to improve themselves.

GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY! You will be navigating an insane amount of ancient Mass Relays in order to reach what we call "Dead Space".

Once there you will be required to ask a billion strong race of near omnipotent techno organic sentient Galaxy killers the following questions-

    "Who the fuck are you?"
    "What do ya want?"
    and finally
"Do you have permission from the council to set up a camp site here ya bunch of pikeys!"
    >> Anonymous 02/18/10(Thu)20:23 No.50024711
Am I the the only one who suspects the Reapers arent as powerful or as many as believed? After all, they seem to rely on slave races (geth, husks, collectors) fairly heavily, and their victories over past races were divide and conquer, in that they shut down the relays and took out isolated systems from there.

They're coming from Dark Space. It's the area of empty space between galaxies. Reapers are chilling JUUUUUUST outside the borders of our galaxy. They needed the Citadel relay to get in, so it's safe to assume they have relays out there that connect to the Citadel. Since we stopped that plan, they have to take the long way in, by flying across the border, slowly.

Before the Rachni were discovered a Relay was open like there was no tomorrow.

After the Rachni Wars, the council decided opening a new Relay was extremely dangerous, and only open one when a whole fleet could pass through, check for safety and etc.

This is why the First Contact War started. Humans didn't know about that Council rule and they somehow ended up in Turian space. Which they tried to open up another Relay, only to be cockblocked by a small fleet guarding the unopened Relay.

Their reasoning is they don't want to go in without knowing the dangers. The rachni wars almost finished off the Salarians and Asari. That's why they uplifted the Krogan.
