Fuck. I'm faced with a moral decision here right now /v/. I'm thinking about pirating video games, because its hard to get any here, but I'm also worried about the risks, and I hardly know shit about it. So basically, what are the pros and cons of pirating, and how do you do it?

Pros: you get infinite games for free

    Cons:

Just go to isohunt, usually the games with the most seeds are p much legit. The only risks are with older games/small file sizes. Just dont be retarded.

If you're okay with STEALING VALUABLE MONEY FROM THOSE POOR, DISENFRANCHISED PUBLISHERS WHO HAVE TO PUT EGREGIOUS AMOUNTS OF FOOD ON THEIR TABLES FOR THEIR FAT FAMILIES THAT YOU'RE SHAMELESSLY STEALING STOLEN MONEY FROM VIA THEFT, everything should be fine.

Most of the new shit thats come out, (Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, ect)

Theres still the question on how do I play them if I download them? Do I just download and open, or do I need some program?

If you are new to the internet, then yeah you will probably get a virus. If you are using torrents, read the comments to get a feel for the legitimacy of the file. If you research enough you will eventually know which uploaders can be trusted. When you do download something scan it before running anything just to make sure. You should be fine.

That isn't a moral decision. You aren't hesitant because you feel it's wrong to pirate, you're hesitant because you're worried about getting caught.

That'd only make sense if you try to pirate Steam games...
Download the vidya, and scan every keygen/exe crack you ever intend to use on these websites:

    http://www.virustotal.com/en/

It's NOT flawless but then again, no antivirus software ever is.

If you want cheap games but you're afraid of getting caught for piracy:
    - Ask friends to download stuff for you. Yes I know this isn't something a good friend would ask for, but it's an option.
    - Ye olde DVD burning/copying games (party like it's 1998!)
    - eBay, flea markets and 2nd hand stores. I cannot stretch flea markets enough. Chances are you'll find a bunch of kids who got video games for christmas and have no idea how much they originally cost, and they sell them to you for single digits.

I'm relatively new to console gaming and believe me, every console related question I'd post on /v/ would sound like shitty trolling from an underaged idiot to everyone here. I'm 23...
    >> Anonymous 02/17/10(Wed)10:57 No.49870788
    Here's the basics.

You need a way to download games to your computer (which is torrenting with the program utorrent)

If you are downloading PC games, you need a program that lets you have a virtual DVD drive on your computer (like Alcohol 120% or Daemon tools)

If you are downloading console games, you need to physically mod your console in some way, UNLESS you are downloading Wii games. You can hack the wii to play burned games by corrupting the internal software.

That's pretty much it. Look up guides on the things I mentioned. And there are zero risks.

Just read the comments, and if your REAL concerned, wait till there are a few on any given torrent. Try and get into a closed community like Demonoid, they tend to be cleaner than average.

Here's a quick guide for you OP

    >PREPIRACY
You'll need Daemon Tools Lite (freeware), and WinRar(nagware), both can be gotten off for free from Cnet (download.com). Since I'm guessing you're torrenting you'll also need uTorrent, same site has it. Install these and then you're ready to begin.

Daemon Tools is an Optical Image Drive Emulator. In laymens terms it's makes pretend DVD drives on which you can mount .iso, .mdf, and other types of files that are, essentially, pretend DVDs.

WinRar is a simple unpacking program similar to WinZip but it is compatible with .rar format, which a majority of games come in.

uTorrent is a torrent client, it's easy.
    >PIRACY PHASE 1. TORRENTING
Go to your tracker of choice (isohunt.com, mininova.com, piratebay.org are all public trackers) and search for the game you're looking for. Make sure to sort by SEEDS DESCENDING on all of these. It'll either explicitly say "Seeds" or at least "S". Usually the torrents will have names like "MassEffect2.Windows.2009.Razor1911" or along those lines. Just download the torrent with the most seeds that looks like it's what you're looking for.

Then wait the 10 hours for that shit to finish.
    >> Anonymous 02/17/10(Wed)11:21 No.49872127
    >>49871795

    >PIRACY PHASE 2. UNPACKING AND MOUNTING

When the torrent is completed find where you downloaded it to (easy way is to right click the torrent in uTorrent>open in folder(or something)) When you open this folder you should see a fuckton of weird looking .rar files that have names like "MassEffect2.Razor1911.rar.part1" Open the first one of these, if it doesn't automatically open with WinRar then select it from the program list or browse for it. Something you'll learn very quickly with piracy is file structures.

When WinRar opens just click Extract near the top and extract it wherever you're comfortable doing so. WinRar will extract all the parts on it's own.

    >PROTIP most games come with a .nfo file. This can be opened in Notepad and has the release group's signature, some information on the game, and a brief instructional on how to install it. This will tell you where the "crack" files are. Remember this or keep this .nfo open the whole time, it'll help you.
After it's extracted go to the little Daemon Tools icon in your taskbar, it should be running all on it's own. Click on it and it should bring up two options, one is "Unmount All Drives" and the second is a drive. Click on the drive (Mine is E: but it may vary) and it'll bring up a file browser. Go to the file you extracted the .rar parts too and find the disc file. Daemon will only see the files it can accept so don't worry about figuring out which it is. Just make sure you go with the discs in order if there are multiple ones (disc 1 before 2, etc).

Click on the disc1 file and Daemon will mount it. This is doing the exact same thing to your computer as putting the DVD inside your disc drive manually.
    >> Anonymous 02/17/10(Wed)11:27 No.49872479
    >PIRACY PHASE 3. INSTALLING AND CRACKING

Now you have your virtual disc mounted in your virtual disc drive. If it's a well-made release the autoplay should start, if not simply go into MyComputer and explore the disc you just mounted, then start the autoplay program or the setup.exe.

Install the program like you would normally from a physical dvd and when the installer finishes close it rather than running the game.

Now, many modern games have some type of DRM protection, I'm sure you've heard on /v/ about it plenty. Now to get around this, most scene groups release a "crack". A crack is a version of the game program (MassEffect2.exe) and maybe a few other files that allow the program to get around the DRM. What you have to do is find the crack (you are told it's location in the .nfo) and copy it over the original file in the install directory (where you installed the game). The .nfo instructions will tell you where this all is.
