93 KB I don't want to overplay the death of Japanese game making. Anonymous 02/10/10(Wed)09:53 No.49127887
    >"You know, I don't want to overplay the death of Japanese game making. The industry is going through some changes right now, for better or worse. Some Japanese companies are still making games that are successful globally. I think it is more a fact that Western game development has grown and matured to a point it can easily compete. While younger generations grew up with Sonic and Mario, current generations are growing up with Halo and World of Warcraft.

Back in my day son, games were difficult.

We didn't have continues and save games. We played the game from the first level, until the last level.

And we enjoyed it. We enjoyed dying and learning from our mistakes. We enjoyed the thrill of reaching that new area, or making it past that boss we were stuck on for weeks.

The only time we weren't enjoying it was when our bitches of parents told us to get off.

Japan is dying because they can't mooch off the PS2 anymore.

Japanese programmers aren't as competent as Western programmers because they seldom interact with other devs due to their refusal to learn English.

Japanese gaming industry is shrinking and settling for the Ipod and Iphone.

Sounds more like apple is trying.
Of course companies want digital distribution, because it gives them more control over their product.
It eliminates a second hand market, so prices don't drop unless they say it does, some can take the product away from you on certain conditions, and you just wind up spending the same money for less.

If anything, lately the marketplace here has become even more introverted. Nobody here has heard of Twilight, let alone the latest internet meme (although bizarrely Susan Boyle is making an impact). Any games 'targeted' at the West will have a hard time because usually they are being targeted at what Japanese perceive the West to be; more often than not the subtleties of nuance are missed.

For Kay, it's more than just a problem with statistics. Rather, there are fundamental problems with the Japanese studio system that are hampering success. "Japan's primary failings revolve around the inefficiency of development practices," he argues. "Japan still works with an 'auteur' system, where a single person, or a select few at the top, decide on every little aspect of the game, and don't think twice about demanding changes that could easily derail the schedule. This has, of course, lead to some amazing games in the past, but with next-gen development, this approach is dangerous and frustrating."

"The financial meltdown has had its effect in Japan too. Nobody really has the money or impetus to make an effort any more and in hard times Japanese companies would rather stick with what they know and are good at. It's a natural reaction, of course, but it's not what the industry needs right now. Rather they need to open up, learn from Western practices and learn to communicate better with Western publishers, developers and audiences."

    >"There very well might also be an element of hubris involved. Japanese games in the past have made quite a splash worldwide and even today a lot of Westerners will defend and praise Japanese games simply for being Japanese. You have to admit that it must be hard for a designer who has made several million-selling, critically acclaimed titles to consider things need to change. It will take a few major studios closing down and some major financially disastrous titles before we will see some real change."

Developers like Richard Garriott pushed the RPG genre ahead. Games like Fallout or Planescape: Torment were truly revolutionary in terms of game design.

Nowadays it's getting a bit stale, but it's by no means comparable to Japanese standards where they still develop clones of 80s dungeon crawlers add a few fmv sequences and call them RPGs.

I must agree and disagree. While the west would have never made Pokemon, Japan would have never made Doom. It's always been back in forth, with one region building on the other's creations and vice versa. To say that one region is more creative is inaccurate. Japan certainly has a lot of off the wall ideas that succeed, but those ideas could be perfectly normal concepts in Japan (Pokemon, for instance, is just Japanese bug collecting). Japanese players might find our games just as curious and out there, even if we view them as normal things (Japan wouldn't have envisioned a battle against demons on Mars like our American sci-fi drenched 70's and 80's minds could have).

I'm not going to say that the west is devoid of anything of merit, but on the grand scale, there's not too much we've done. The good stuff that have come out here were mainly by indie developers.

Pretty much all good Flight/Tank/U-Boat/.../sims are made in the west. Grand strategy games like Hearts of Iron or Europa Universalis. Squad tactics games like X-Com or Jagged Alliance. RPGs were invented in the west. Ultima 3 is pretty much the proto-JRPG. But western designers took RPGs a step ahead by adding role playing choices and non-combat interaction. Adventure games like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle or Grim Fandango. Fast-paced competitive FPS like Quake and online multiplayer gaming was invented in the west. RTS were invented in the west.

To claim there was no creativity in the west is ridiculous.

Funny how the only time something decent comes out of Japan, it's a rip-off of western culture. Damn gooks never learned from the 80s it seems.

Oh, boo-hoo-hoo. If it makes you feel any better, in ten years, those kids will read an article titled "While older generations grew up with Halo and World of Warcraft, current generations are growing up with the In the Trenches series and Land of the Dragons", and then they'll get to feel all depressed, yet superior as well!

Just because a franchise went to shit, does not make it's heyday go away.

MK is still far better than Street Fighter ever was, and basically all Jap fighters are variations of SF 2.

Try harder. Oh, and btw: MK Shaolin Monks is more fun than any action title I have seen from Capcom or Konami, so even at face value your argument holds no water. Or in your case: piss.

Shut up. Mortal Kombat is and always has been fucking garbage. Only reason it did well is because it had blood, and stirred controversy so bunch of KIDS (thats what you were when it came out) could buy it and obsess over the violence they never got to see.

You're also intensely ignorant for saying all Street Fighters are the same, (fuck SF4, but thats my opinion) you've clearly never even played street fighter 3, of the entire series, mechanically it has the most depth and variation , and plays nothing like SF2.

Just because you're so blinded with rage at japan doesn't mean you have to go off spouting retarded claims, making the rest of the WRPG fans look like ignorant retards.

Then again, maybe im a dying breed, where i judge a game based off its fucking merits, and not where it comes from? We're no better than the Japanese in terms of create total and utter shit games.

It's one area where Japan is weak while the West, pretty much the US in particular, is strong. In a thread where people have come out of the woodwork to point out how the West can't make a good fighter or a good JRPG, I think it's a fair point to make.

A lot of Japanese games this gen just aren't that interesting.

I DO hope Ar Tonelico III gets an American & Euro-release (considering what's happening to NIS, Namco/Bandai, & Atlus I'm not sure...)...but other than the occasional stellar DS & PSP releases--this gen has SUCKED J-gaming-wise.

Just too damned expensive to risk making original games. I hope this lesson will not be lost on $ony & M$: Next time make your systems AND Dev kits EASY & CHEAP to work with. They might hit max usability with the dev kits a little early, but is that really such a bad thing?

We've gotten to the point tech-wise that it's less how advanced the graphics are & more the complexity of the art direction that matters for graphics.

If next gen consoles continue the path the P$3 & the $-Box 360 ran down heedless of the dangers, then we'll likely see the entire industry implode under the weight of only 3 or 4 big-budget failures--failures meaning the games didn't sell enough to recoup the costs, even if it sold well by any other estimates.
