I started playing videogames as a kid because WOW I'M CONTROLLING THE GUY ON MY TV WITH THIS BUTTON COOL and that was enough. But when I started becoming proficient at playing them, I started looking at them more as personal challenges. The developer has put a mountain in front of me, and I seek to climb it. Not for achievement points or whatever, but for a satisfaction similar to say, completing a difficult crossword. If a game is entertaining and perhaps charming as it goes, then those are the games I truly love.

I play because I am obsessive compulsive and have Asperger's. I need to be in control of everything.

I play vidya games because my dad brought home a NES back in the day, and once he beat mario bros. he never played games again. So it was pretty much my NES.

Not having many friends where I lived at the time, this is how I spent my days. Playing Mario 3.

Moving, and going to school, I couldn't make any friends. (I'm not exactly attractive, excellent bullyfuel.) So I didn't spend time socializing. Gaming is how I spent my time. There really wasn't anything else to do with my time. Got a Genesis, and SNES. An N64. A PC. A dreamcast. Etc. etc. My parents never really forced me in any particular direction. They let me do everything myself. I needed to solve my own problems, and make my own decisions.

So games stuck with me as my main hobby. Not as demanding as Reading, not as passive as movies... Keeps a mental challenge in competitive games. As good-a time-sink as anything else...

The same could be said for why we're are all currently browsing 4chan

I play video games because my commodore 64 and Atari 2600 raised me as a child while my parents were out partying.

I play videogames because I want to experience as many things in my life as possible.

I know it's impossible to play every game, read every book, watch every movie, ect. ect. but for as short a life as I get to live, I want to experience as much of everything and see all of what humanity has to offer before I die.

I have to disagree, because I recently realized videos games were/are holding me back from reality. I need to be sociable, outgoing , and less of a hermit. Videos games will come and go but family and friends always come first. When the day comes that you realize at 24 years old, you have done nothing besides sit at home playing videos games and every one else has been growing up and taking responsibility, ie; living life. You realize while videos games are fun for leisure time, don't make them your life. Live life at its fullest and You will really have something you can look back at and be proud of, something you have accomplished that means something.

This. Games nowadays deliver different experiences, while they are still fun. I do all I can with my life, work hard, study a lot, take care of my family, exercise, play guitar, draw, etc, but at the end of the day, the vidya still deliver something different and new, unlike my other activities and medias. I there are always some time to kill too.

Vidya will always be interesting. And the brain needs to focus enough on the game that it doesn't have the resources to focus on "My friends are all successful presidents of their own countries now!" Why should I care? It doesn't matter what they are. Maybe they are/were more intelligent than me. It doesn't really matter. Games give you pretty much everything. Except social intimacy.
