You must take the sacred object, leave your town, save the world against the great evil, while doing monotonous, useless, arbitrary side quests for random people who know who you are, but still bother to waste your time on their petty bullshit. You will fall in love with a dashing/beautiful lord/lady, you will meet a witty and quick rogue, you will fall in line with a simple but strong barbarian, your efforts will inspire thousands who will simply hope and pray you succeed in your mission, instead of offering tangible help, and you will slay thousands of monsters with nothing to say for it besides a lot of useless experience in a skill you won't use afterwards, and a couple of pairs of pants you'll never wear.
